8600 GPS location

I haven't seen any posts on this. I tried searching, but the search doesn't seem to work...any tips to get searching the forums to work?

Anyway, is there a way to see your GPS location on the 8600? I can turn location on, but is there a way to see it? I would be interested both in seeing the coordinates on the screen and also be able to communicate the info to a PC.

Brew has something about it @ http://brew.qualcomm.com in the developer's sample code... called IPOSDET Sample - Check it out... written in C++

I guess the real question is - Can BREW access the coordinates from the GPS? If so, why hasn't someone written a mapping application?

Most cell phones don't connect directly to satillites they connect to radio towers. Thus, your phone will never truly give you 'GPS' cordinates from satillites. The locating service thing is just a triangelation between towers to help pinpoint your position for emergency use.

As of now you can't hook up your phone to a laptop and use some road map software. This will be something in the future and will require new software. It will also cost you money.

If you really want to do it, just buy a GPS unit.

My buddy has hooked his Nextel to his laptop with mapping software. It's pretty slick. It seems for once, Nextel's phones have a non PTT feature one up on Verizon. I am not sure if it is doing tower or satellite triangulation.

Regardless, it would still be nice to use the information with any GPS location enabled phone even if it is less accurate. I'm not looking for pinpoint accuracy (if I was, I'd fork out the money for one). I'd pay for Brew software that would display/output my location, accurate to 50-100 feet, without requiring an additional device.
