Nokia 8890 Service Manual & Technical Problems -- HELP!!!

Hi everyone!

I'm a newbie to this forum, although I've been browsing the website for a couple of months now.

I'm really in desperate need of some help in fixing my Nokia 8890 . Here are the problems that I'm experiencing:

1. The speaker has been cutting in and out. During calls I have to press down on the frame in order to hear the person I'm talking with. This also affects the keypad tones...currently I cannot hear them unless I press down on the frame that covers the speakers. Any ideas on this...? What do I need to fix this???

2. The LCD screen has been fading in and out and displaying strange symbols and characters. After having the phone exorcised by a priest, the phone has still continued to do this. I read somewhere that this is probably due to a faulty elastomer (a little sponge-like block) that needs replacement. Is this accurate??? I have order a couple, but I don't want to rip apart my phone without knowing for sure.

Also, does anyone have an e-copy of the Nokia 8890 service manual???? I plan to do these repairs myself but I'd like to have some sort of reference.

I appreciate any and all replies with suggestions to these problems. I really love my 8890 and hope to get it back into shape soon.

Thanks!!

1) Take apart the phone and add a very small amount of cushioning around the ear piece, making sure not to put cushioning ON TOP of the speaker, just around the frame.

2) Get a new screen, or replace the elastomer, which you're going to do anyway..

Hope that helps.

Outsid3r,

Thanks for your suggestions! I would have written sooner but I've been off the internet for the past few weeks because I was recently married.

I found out the problem with the speaker. It was actually due to a hairline crack in the A frame housing (down the middle of the black plastic portion). So I installed a new one and it works great.

I ended up purchasing a new LCD which in turn presented a new problem. The LCD only shows "Enter Sim Code" and the battery meter. After I enter the sim code, the screen stays blank. I spoke to the seller, who told me this is due to a software incompatibility and most likely I need to update my Nokia software. Do you have any idea where I can download the latest version of Nokia software for the 8890??

Thanks in advance for your help!

Um.... you'll have to take it to the shop for them to update the firmware. I've also had the same problem and I DO believe it is a firmware problem. For example, 8850 LCDs won't work with the v 12.08 firmware....which is probably the LCD you have.

Just take it into a cellphone store, they should be able to flash firmware for you.
