Only residents in Japan can buy mobile phones and subscribe service of mobile phone operators, NTTDoCoMo, au and Vodafone.
The Japanese operators don't sell only phones without subscription. NTTDoCoMo's FOMA phones are WCDMA and Vodafone Japan's Global Standard phones are WCDMA/GSM dual mode. But all of them are SIM locked.
Japanese mobile phone makers don't sell SIM free models, but supply locked phones only to operators. I subscribe Vodafone Global Standard and use V801SA. As a consumer, I asked Sanyo whether V801SA can be unlocked, and whether Sanyo has a plan to sell SIM free V801SA in future. Sanyo said "sorry, contracts with Vodafone prohibit us to answer such questions."
Here is not GSM system in Japan, so most Japanese people don't know what GSM or SIM system are like. Now more and more people subscribe FOMA, but they just prefer state-of-art phone sets and don't care difference between PDC and WCDMA at all. Keeping consumers ignorant about new technologies' benefits, NTT and Vodafone exploit them greedily.
Now here are answers to jon_k86:
u can buy this fone in hk? --- No.
it would work in australia right? --- In Australia, it works only under international roaming service for Vodafone Japan subscribers.
What a shame !
Do you still want V801SH ? If you have friends living in Japan as long term residents, you can ask them to apply for subscription, or buy used one at Yahoo! Auction Japan.
