I would like to know how changing the ESN on a phone works... If I was to change the ESN of my slider to the ESN of another phone, would I be able to use the service and phone number of that slider?

You can't change the esn of the phone...that is the electronic serial number from the manufacturer.
I think what you want to do can be done though...not by how you phrased it. Basically you want to load your phone number into another handset and use it on your service? If you can do that really depends on your provider if they will let you or not, assuming you have a cdma provider (gsm fellas can just move their sim cards from handset to handset). VZW allows this to some degree, not sure about some others. It appears you have VM, I doubt that they have the control to do that since they use Sprint network and have limited access so to speak. Maybe some of the VM fellas could answer that for certain though.

I have the pst s/w and I know that it doesn't allow you to change the ESN...The ESN is hard-coded to the phone as I said before.

I have an actual ESN changing program... its seperate from the PST....

Well...if you can do it, then in theory it should work. Basically the databases for your provider would still think you are using the original phone. Just make sure to program the number into the phone too. I'd like to know how it turns out...

so if the esn is changed and nam is all setup it should work?

I don't see why not...don't forget to get the latest prl loaded in too. What's the worse thing that will happen, you have to revert back to the old phone.

WRONG WRONG WRONG!
it's not that EASY!!!
you have to find your akey,ssd_a and ssd_b
When you have all this info. you can "copy" your phone number to another handset.
I use this phone:

and what I said had been tested on it.
