does anyone know where I can download a free "normal" ringtone for this phone? The 5 standard ones that are on the phone are so cheesy and I am looking for one that resembles a traditional sounding ring.
Thanks,

Me to. It's hard to look manly with the type of ring tones on this phone. I usually keep it on vibrate and then ring. Bye the way, the Verizon version has approx 15-20 tones.

... all of which are discustingly annoying! I can always tell when someone has an 8600 because of that gawdawful russian dance noise that is the default ringer. It does have some bell ones that wouldn't make me too embarrassed, but they're annoying as ever.

That's the same thing I thought when I initially got my phone. I have gotten a bunch of MIDIs and modified them to make ringtones. I had initially thought about making a couple midis that sound like regular rings. In the next couple days, I'll sit down and see if I can come up with one.

heh, I do have a rip off of a standard Nextel ring that I made just to goof with one of my friends with a Nextel. I can try to upload that later this evening.

Hey, that was my ringer !!!!An Italian (me) with a Russian ringtone on a Korean phone repackaged by an American company....Actually, I usually set it on vibrate, except when my wife calls, I have it set to play "The Star spangled banner". In the defense of the 8600, I have heard others phones with real whimpy ring tones as well. What's the deal with these? They must have asked a group of 1st graders what ringers would be politically correct....sorry if I offended any first graders

Here is the Nextel ripoff ringer described above...enjoy

Here's my first "standard" ringer.

I tested it on my 8600. It's really loud and surprisingly sounds almost like an actual set of bells. As I get time, I may be willing to create some based on constructive criticism.

Enjoy

What did you use to get this on your phone? Can you explain the steps? I know computers but am not as comfortable with phones.

You should be able to find the info you're looking for at Smitty's website (thanks to him for consolidating everything): http://smithplanet.com/8600/

Look for connecting the 8600 with Bitpim and the VoxIndexEditor (you can find much of the same info in one of the forums I didn't have time to search for). If you have the 8900, beware that people have been goofing their phones up, so I've heard. I think it had something to with having the index file out of sync with the files actually on the phone. You should be able to find that info in one of the threads in the audiovox forum...didn't have time to look.

I created these MIDI ringtones with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 and dumped them on my phone just like any other MIDI ringtone.
