Usually there is only 8 white keypad lights. But somehow, this picture has 12!!!!!!!

Not happy with just the firmware eh Rich?

Still got my eye on that fascia......Just a question of guts

BTW I only count 10 lights and the screen doesn't count...

look under the Green and Red call and hangup button Its just above it, to light up the two quick nav buttons.

P.S I updated my firmware succesfully without it killing it self

i can barely see them. heheh

lol
you're so picky!
but wouldn't the extra leds suck more power out of the phone?
i mean it needs all the power it can get to last haha
so i'm fine with the amount of leds i have right now or my battery will last one day, lol

i was thinking the same thing... as long as it has enough lights for me to see the keys in the dark that's fine... it's not like the battery life on the X70 is all the good... but it's still a good phone.

I was just wondering, whether the phone has the extra LED's but are just not activated or something. Its just an extra 4 LED's which doesnt take a lot of power to make em glow !

It's not firmware - The original design had LEDs in all those positions, but in order to extend battery life they took out the ones you can't see in the final handsets - it made a real difference, honest! The picture above was an early CEBIT handset, with the old design internals.

Bet the solder points are still there on the board though - I've got a mate who soldered red LEDs onto the board in place of the blue ones and it looks well cool!

OK, this is a little complicated.

First, you need the right tools - the tri-blade screwdriver can be bought at ebay - From here...

Then, you need to remove the four rubber screw covers on the back. Undo the four screws, and carefully unlatch the case clips by gently forcing the casing apart at the seams down each side, working from the bottom to the top. THe bottom case should come off, and may take the back speaker assembly with it. It's useful to be able to leave that on the board inside the top cover.

Now, once the bottom is off, undo the two screws holding the hinge in place - there's a retaining plate which holds the hinge together. Once this is removed, the top clamshell will want to eject itself, so be careful!

Once you've removed the hinge cover, CAREFULLY lever up the board (the hinge cover gets in the way of this bit if you haven't removed it) and remove the plug on the top of the bottom board connecting it to the ribbon cable for the top half. You can now remove the bottom board.

The top half will then come away if you carefully tease it out of the hinge housings on either side. Watch out for the ribbon cable where it is passed through the side of the hinge which doesn't have the mechanical hinge joint in - and remember how it went through!

Top case -
Remove the silver plate at the bottom of the front display, and the two rubber screw covers from the top. Remove all four screws and again, carefully prise the two covers of the top casing apart as you did for the bottom. The top (outside when shut) will come off, not the bottom.

Now release the earpiece speaker from the top edge of the casing.

Once that's off, carefully prise the board out of the inside case by releasing it from the middle at either side - there are a couple of tabs holding it in. Voila! The top board is out!

Refitting is a reversal of removal, as they say in the haynes manuals - but the crucial things to remember are:

1. Refit the earpiece speaker properly - the magnet makes it want to stick to the PCB for the top board
2. Careful when reassembling the hinge!
3. Plug the bottom board back into the top one BEFORE you refit the hingeplate - otherwise you'll wonder how the hell they were ever plugged together! This bit's extra tricky as the hinge is unstable until the plate is back on. Persevere!

Keep all the little rubber bits as well, they all stick back in just fine with a little copydex.

This all works, trust me, I've reassembled 3 x70s now!

Actually, I have a small stock of replacement rubber covers - esp the bottom ones (maybe a couple of hundred), quite early rev but they do work as replacements. Think I should ebay 'em?
