sending s40 in for repair

I am thinking on sending the s40 in for a housing replacement and software update. I am currently with Nextel and am thinking on going back to Voicestream. I like the functionality of the s40 quite a bit. Siemens wants $110 for a housing replacement and i will have the software upgraded at the same time since I am at 3.2. But $110 is cheaper than a t68. Yeah i wont have that features that I wont use. But the s40 allowed me to ditch any pda i carried at the time for address's and calendar.
What do you folks think of my reasoning?

$110 for housing replacement?
I think for $110 you can almost buy a brand new S40 somewhere.

A brand new one costs around $130 now.

yes, but is it unlocked?
all the places I know of an s40 unlocked is more than $110

but i dont know everything.

your choice actually. you can either blow $110 for a housing replacement or about $130 for a brand new one but chances are the new one won't have the latest firmware on it. so that means you shell out another $10 or so for shipping to have it updated.

siemens still doesn't seem to have the s40 on sale on their website but you can get one off online merchants for cheap. stay off ebay buddy. i'd get one from yahoo shopping if i were you. i've had many a pleasant experience buying from yahoo merchants as compared to ebay sellers where you run the risk of getting duped.

good luck!

Maybe you can try to deal with lvwireless in this forum,
he seems pretty reliable according to his feedbacks.

Last time I saw he got the S40 for around $130.

Thank you for all the suggestions but wouldnt sending the unit into Siemens guarantee i get the latest firmware and put the unit back to almost new. I mean it looks new with the exception of a giant gouge in the upper right corner.
And supposedly I can just drop it off at a Siemens facility in town and they send it in and everything.

Just a thought,
Thank you for your suggestions though.
I know I asked for suggestions, and I do appreciate them.

Last time I sent 2 of my S40s in for the 9.0.0 update (in Germany) I asked if it was possible to replace the scratched display windows for free, too. Guess what: they really did replace the front covers free of charge. I got them back after 2(!) days.
Maybe you should try the same.

Speaking of replaced housings, maybe Siemens has this thing for keeping ALL known S40's out there looking beautiful. Hehehe. There was not a single time I sent my S40 for updating (only) that they didn't replace the housing for free.

Each time I'd send it in, it would have a few scratches on the back but only as a result of daily use. And every time I got it back, voila...new housing.

This one's happy. =P
