my gf just noticed the GPRS logo on her phone and has no idea how it got there. How do you turn it off?

That just indicates your phone is picking up a GPRS signal. can't turn it off - it doesn't mean you are USING GPRS just that it is available.... if you are 'signed in' to gprs their will be little bars on either side of the gprs letters like this |GPRS|
and if you are downloading there will be a little red arrow on the left (?) side of the GPRS indicator.

but why would it just appear now after almost a month?

Ermm I dunno! Perhaps they just added it in the area you live? I've just purchashed this phone a week or two ago- Trying out AT^T wireless and noticed that while roaming on NPI in northern michigan that the GPRS FIRST went to a red background and then disapeared altogether.

i figured it out on my dad's C56 after converting from an A56.. i can't turn it off with an active sim since the option didn't show up... so i figured it out that it occurs when i put in a dead sim.. the option was there and i just switched it off..

I know here in the DC area they turned on GPRS not too many months ago. I just noticed it one day out of the blue. Tried it out to see how it works on a S56. I had my phone for almost a year out before getting to use it.
