BBerry 7280 Won't "boot"
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: krkirkwood
So I got a brand new BBerry 7280 yesterday with Cingular service.
Corporate IT came today to upgrade the desktop software on my laptop. In the process, they somehow managed to make the 7280 inoperative.
Now all it does is sit there and flash the message notification LED twice every three seconds. There is no display on the screen. The power button does nothing. Neither does a soft reset (alt + right shift + backspace) or hard reset (paper clip in the "reset" hole in the battery compartment).
I have no clue what is wrong. Does anybody have any ideas about how to recover?
Thx

stupid question, battery is full charged and such?
Posted by: krkirkwood
Yeah, battery is good. In fact I "borrowed" a 7280 from a co-worker. Put my battery and SIM card in her handheld and it worked fine. I even used the phone to setup my voice mail.

krkirkwood - what happens if you connect the BB to your desktop via the USB cable and start the Desktop Manager software? Is the BlackBerry properly detected? If it is detected, try and run Application Loader.
Posted by: krkirkwood
rip - I've tried the service book before, no way to tell. It's like the ×××× thing won't finish booting.
NJBlackberry - no joy on the connection. When I connect it to the computer, the operating system on my laptop (Win2K) detects the handheld, but the BlackBerry Desktop Manager won't.

i guess "back & restore" from the desktop manager is out of the question too?
I guess you'll have to call back that IT and see what they did?

Have you tried a hard reset with the reset button under the battery cover? If you have no luck with that take the batter out and let the unit sit for an hour or so, upon placing the battery back in the unit hopefully the device will power cycle properly? (this worked for my old BB 6710) Have you spoke with Cingular? I had a similar issue with my BB 7280 at start up all I would I get was a error 503 and the unit would hang, called Rogers Wireless and the were able to help with further insight to get it running again.

rip - you're right, back up and restore is out of the question. The Desktop Manager can't detect the handheld. IT is getting a call first thing Tuesday morning
BlackBerryFinch - Cingualar's response to my phone call was "if it won't power on, there isn't much we can do from here. Try taking it to one of our stores". So that is what I'm going to try Saturday.
I have the battery our right now and will try it one more time in the morning to see if anything has changed
Thx for the suggestions

LED flashing means the software has become corrupted on your unit. The unit has "boot" up, it just can't find any of the software.
Typically reapplying all the current and latest software usually fixes the problem.
You should see if the unit makes a quiet beep when you turn it on, if it does then the software is working perfectly fine, you might have an LCD problem.
If you reload the sofware and get an error message "507" just reapply the software again, and see if that helps you out.

Since the power button does not appear to function, I can't really see if it powers up or not.
If my desktop software doesn't detect the handheld, is there another way to reapply the software? My operating system detects the handheld, but not the desktop software, which I assume is the only way to reload the software.
Thx

I would make sure you have the proper drivers installed for your blackberry then... I have seen where the Windows operating system detects the unit -- but since the drivers weren't installed properly the desktop software could not find the unit itself...
If the LED light flashes then the unit has power going through it but the software is corrupted like I said previously.
I would do this to make sure your drivers are installed properly
Right click on my computer
Goto Properties
Goto Hardware
Goto Device Manager
And see if you can find your blackberry in the list
If there is a yellow exclamation mark beside the blackberry name in the list then there is something wrong with your drivers.
The above works that is.... if you have windows installed.

krkirkwood - have you tried the "Javaloader" program. If it is corrupted software (a possibility) on the handheld, Javaloader will wipe out the code and allow you to reload it.
Javaloader is part of the BlackBerry SDK on the RIM Developer's web site.

Good call NJ, thats what I was thinking of in my post when I had mentioned I was getting 503 Error. Rogers Wireless had whalked me through the steps of the "Javaloader" app and that was the fix, well for my BB. Give it a shot krkkirkwood hopefully it resolves the problem? BB Development Page

Right now you guys are Gods.... My knowledge in all of this has increased exponentially. But I still have two more questions.
First, is it possible to use Javaloader without knowing the PIN of the handheld? (or is there a way to get the PIN without reading it off the handheld since mine is broke-××××?)
Second, where do I find the COD file(s) that I need to upload. I downloaded the latest software for the handheld, I believe it was 3.7 something. But I haven't found any COD files.
Thx again

Javaloader doesn't care about the PIN.
Here's the simple command to use (open a DOS prompt and make sure Javaloader is available)...
javaloader -usb wipe
** DO NOT USE javaloader -usb nuke ** Use wipe
That will check for the device on any USB port, and wipe it out.
Then start Application Loader and see what happens.
You don't need any COD files. Just make sure you have the latest Desktop Manager (3.6.2.9) and the latest handheld code from your BB vendor.

Just a word of advice if the BB looks fine in device manager butg cannot be detected then application loader can still run....

NJBlackberry -
Is the "handheld code" that you mention different from the Cingular specific download that I got from Blackberry thats titled "7280_3_7_1_release37 cingular.exe"? I've run the exe and it appears to try and install a newer desktop manager. But for some reason our corporate version of the dm, 3.6.0.54 is the one that continues to run. I checked Cingular's site and had no luck finding any handheld code - lots of PDF files on how great Cingular thinks they are, but no joy on the code.
ViVeRANT -
I must be breaking new ground here - my handheld is detected by the OS (Win2K), and appears with no yellow exclamation in the system window, yet the app loader still doesn't detect the handheld.
I'm about to run the "javaloader -usb wipe"... I'll report back with what happens.
Thx

You've got it right - the handheld code is the latest from the Cingular web site - 3.7.1.32. The latest Desktop Manager (3.6.2.9) is on the RIM support web site - https://www.blackberry.com/Software...lient=Ud4RBlehp - select "BlackBerry Desktop Manager v3.6 (Service Pack 2).

I think my handheld is truly dead. javaloader can't communicate with it, I continue to get "Error: Unable to connect to device" when I try the following commands:
javaloader -usb wipe
javaloader wipe
javaloader -usb deviceinfo
javaloader deviceinfo
The only difference between the two sets of commands (with and with out the "-usb") is that the commands with the "-usb" switch return the error almost instantly while the commands without the "-usb" switch take 3 or 4 seconds before returning the error. The USB interface is good, as I said before, the OS continues to detect the handheld when I plug it in to the computer.
Any other ideas?
Thx

Long shot here but... Is you USB data cable plugged directly into the computer or is it going through a hub? I only ask as I had a heck of a time syncing, app loading, updating etc. when my BB was connected through a hub. System would recognize it but I would get constant communication errors, the device at this point my very well just a lemon from the factory that ended in your hands but I figured it doesn't hurt to pose the USB question.

BlackBerryFinch -
I'm hooked up directly to the USB port on my laptop. I had read the earlier posts about communication trouble when using a USB hub so I skipped that step altogether.

Everyone who has helped -
Thanks. I revived my handheld today and it now seems to be working fine. My basic problem was that in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, I was trying to detect the connection prior to using the Application Loader. Once I went straight to the App Loader, it detected the handheld and loaded the latest software. I'm synching up with Outlook as I type this.
Thanks again.

good job man, congrats and welcome back

Great to hear, after all the trouble I'm glad you got it up and running.
Posted by: ViVeRANT
Yes apploader like I mentioned will work regardless if you can detect the handheld or not... Just a newb question but did you have the desktop software running while trying to use javaloader by any chance?
50% of the people I know left the Desktop Software running while trying to use javaloader and programmer and well since it activeley monitors the ports well yea...
Posted by: krkirkwood
ViVeRANT -
When I was trying to run javaloader, I did not have the Desktop Manager running. I suppose I should try to figure out why I was getting the error, but right now I'm just satisfied that my handheld is working again. Needless to say, the corporate IT folks won't be touching it for a long time.
Thx
