Have you tried to do a master reset on your phone? Sometimes the phone will not switch over until this is done.

Posted by: swizzxt21

well mcpaulyb what fone did u upgrade from cause if u upgraded from the 730 or another falcon fone i would just use the sim card from da older fone

Posted by: GregGebhardt

Nextel sent me the larger battery but NO door. They expect to ship in two weeks!

So far the slim battery has lasted a day with about 1/4 charge left.

Posted by: sfld

chances are someone got a number wrong somewhere

Posted by: JOKER

Greg- have you been talking alot on it? Just curious about the battery......haven't used mine much.

Posted by: Canibus

they told me they got a backlog correct, due to the long weekend and the new activations on the 830. They told me 1-4 hours for the swap, hope that helps ya out

Posted by: eckoman001

i talked on mine for like 30 minutes and played some games and went on the internet still full

Posted by: mcpaulyb

I'm upgrading from a sim chip from my old i90 that I was using in my i730.

I called a second time and they double checked that the SIM number was correct, again told me that there was a backlog, and told me I just had to wait. This sucks.

Posted by: weilong

If I remember correctly, i95/i90 slim battery doors fit on the standard battery(tight squeeze).

Have you tried the same with your i830? Just curious.

Posted by: Canibus

mine just went through, urs should be through soon to dont worry

Posted by: bradb21

Upgraded to two i730's the day they were released. I'm sure it was a very busy time then too.

My SIM swaps happened while I was on the phone with the guy. He did test calls to my two new phones/SIMs to verify.

I think you got something wrong.

HOW EXACTLY DO YOU DO A SIM SWAP YOU JUST CALL AND GIVE THEM THE NUMBER ON THE CARD ??

Posted by: mcpaulyb

When you get the phone they already know the SIM number, but you should verify it.

Mine still hasn't gone thru - 3hrs +

I do my usual amount, don't know how many minutes with a good bit of DC. Phone has been off the charger when I got up at 3:30 and it is showing 1/2 now. It will last the normal day. I carry the cig charger in the SUV and have an extra AC charger at the office.

The slim is probly more than enough for my 20-30 calls with lots of DC. I just wanted to get the larger battery for safety. It will add very little to the thickness of the phone.

I do like the i830, I swear the reception is better than my i730 and the external speaker is far superior.

Not any possible way.

I feel for ya guys on this..i ordered mine at 10:30am pacific time and at 5pm the same day i called to confirm my order..and they said it was "NOT" back ordered and that was being processed. Today I called and got the exact opposite of that story. By waiting on the idiots in telesales i missed out..because most store in my area are sold out. If i didnt call i would have been sitting around waiting for my phone to arrive by friday as promised. Way to notify us nextel...big big let down in my eyes.

Posted by: nextel4lfe

Greg, definitely post us some pics of the standard battery in the phone. Curious to see the difference in size. Want to see how much it adds to the phone. I will probably still get it anyway to be safe on talk time, but wanted to see how it looks. Thanks!

Posted by: mcpaulyb

Just called again, and the CS rep informed me that it is going to take 9 hours to activate the phone!!!! What the hell kinda show are they running over there?!?!? They better get on that.

Posted by: nextel4lfe

Umm I just ordered mine today, from Enterprise Telesales, around 1pm, and I got a call at 130 asking to confirm everything, and they even told me on the phone she was processing the order and I should get the phone by Friday. Dont know where everyone is getting this info of the phone being on backorder. They have PLENTY I am sure.

Posted by: nextel4lfe

I am glad I already have a 64k sim from my 730. Just put my old sim in the 830 and bam, up and runnin

Posted by: chance631

I ordered my from enterprise telesales at 9:00 am yesterday morning and my phone is on back order. So good luck

Posted by: nextel4lfe

lol Mine is being processed.

Posted by: dinlong

ordered yesterday afternoon at about 3pm. i was told by telesales that the phone was available to be shipped today, and would be to me no later than friday.

checked my status this morning: backorder

ggrrr!!!

Posted by: tommy0486

all phones should be off of back order...just got off the phone with telesales to check my order status and he said that they got a "shipment" in and that all orders should be updated online in a few hours...supposed to be here tomorrow

Posted by: nexteltier1

Companies sometimes have things called "technical difficulties". Yes it doesn't make you feel any better, but it happens, and complaining about it doesn't make it provision any faster. When it happens, there is nothing that can be done but to just let it take it's course through the system.

Posted by: the_darkside

My order status went from "backorder" to "in progress" today. I take it that means they got some stock in...

Posted by: rcg

The size difference is about 1.5mm thicker on the high performance NNTN5195 over the slim NNTN4930

Motorola says June 17 for the doors... Naturally we will stock them.

Ok is the batteries for the 830 the same as the 730's ?

Posted by: rcg

No. Not the same.

Posted by: kco19

Try duct tape. It's silver.

Posted by: insanati0n

yeah, its not even low stock in our system anymore. all clear, for now

Got mine

How are they different ? I know the chargers are the same.

Posted by: Nextelcup

The i830 battery is smaller in width. No way you can fit any other battery on it. Kinda looks like the blackberry battery in the way it is setup, BUT the BB battery is bigger.

And I doubt the desktop charger will be the same looking at the phone.

Damm, why does motorola mess with success ? I really dont want to buy new batteries for this phone!

Posted by: Nextelcup

But you will, so they get more $$$$$$$

Posted by: speedtec11s

this is funny....i got the same call after i made my order... just to confirm that I made my order. Dont be fooled...when i have an 830 in my hands...then i will be a believer..until then....i have yet to see proof of this back order being false

It would not do that if you have Insurance you will get screwed. Also it will effect your warranty if you do not activate the new card.

Freak that , i will work on some sort of contraption to make the batteries work and fit! !

WTF...its instantanious they should just as for the imei, sim id, and the serial number and thats it.believe me i know...ive been using my i95 and i730 for the past few months now....ive been swapping like crazy

Posted by: DaBlack

Well I called back Corp sales and they said that they now have them avaliable in FDT and should have the phone should be shipped today or tomorrow.

Posted by: gcrew

I ordered mine at 4:30 pm yesterday and was told by telesales that I would have it today before 5:00 pm. I just called telesales, and they couldn't guarantee anything, but that I might have it by Friday.

Posted by: AEguyNYC5

when the phone is just released you have to call TeleSales if you want it right away. I just ordered it 5 minutes ago and I get it tomorrow.

Have you seen the battery yet? Even if your real good it's in no way possible to use an old batt. in here.

Posted by: blazer22

the new batteries have the connections on the left side and not the top, so have fun trying to make that work.

Posted by: Canibus

i got bronze, my box says R2B.00.00, But my phone says R2B.00.01 go figure

I would assume then the standard battery cover will have a slight bulge kinda like how the stock 730 battery door slightly bulges

Posted by: nexteltier1

Hsash, doing a sim swap by calling in to Nextel is NOT instantaneous if there is a provisioning problem. If you are talking about TAKING your SIM chip out of one phone and into another without calling into Nextel, YES, that is instantaneous, but we are talking about a swap being done the correct way, through our system. Big difference.

Posted by: DELTA KID

CHECKED MY ORDER STATUS YESTERDAY AND IT SAID BACK ORDERED AND TODAY IT SAYS SHIPPED

Posted by: Next Steps

I've done about 10 upgrades today and most of them (but not all) have had a backlog. Activation Support told me it was about an hour, but I had a customer call me after 2 hours and it still wasnt done.

Posted by: speedtec11s

just called tele sales..they said and i quote the phones are still back ordered and no stock has been recieved...this was at 330pm pacific standard time.

Posted by: HoBo

Has anyone tried taking the battery out of the plastic housing to see if it will fit the slim door then

Posted by: AEguyNYC5

thats weird cuz a order verification rep just called me from a 604 area code and told me the phone is shipping tonight (FedEx) and I will have it in 1 to 3 days.

Soon as the door comes in I will post some detailed images. The difference in the two battery thicknesses is slight so you are not looking at a big difference.

Has anyone used the new Webjal loader yet. I can't get it to work on my Silver 01 version, Webjal says this version doesn't support the software that is on my phone. However, other people have gotten it to work on their i830. I wonder if they have the .00 version and that's why it's working.

I ordered an 830 yesterday. I'll be the first to admit, a few weeks ago I was real against the phone and I thought it was just a "small 730." I was like a lot of other people and I thought the 830 was a waste of money. I was able to get it @ flat rate pricing, and I got rid of my 730 a few days ago too, so it ended up not costing me much at all to upgrade.

I've only had the phone a few hours and I must say it is a real nice and sturdy phone. The flip feels good, and the overall feel of the phone is nice. It is a real small phone. When I first saw pictures of it I didn’t realize how small it was till I saw it next to the v60. It is a real thin and light phone.

I can't say anything about the reception being any better than the 730 yet, because I haven't made many calls on it. I'm still in my office at work. I do like the refreshable wallpaper feature. Once I get some backgrounds on here I'll play with that. I hope the 120 minute battery life doesn't take anything away from this phone because so far it looks like a real nice phone.

The phone sounds real good. The ringer on it is plenty loud, and the person on the other end of the direct connect is real loud at 4-7 on the volume. I don’t know why someone said the volume on the 830 was bad or the speaker was soft… I am real pleased with the sound coming out of such a little phone.
The phone fits in the desktop charger for the 730.
The antenna is retractable, most of you know by now.
The keypad on the phone is nice. It isn’t too small. I've played with small phones before and some I really didn’t like. The 830 is a small phone, but I do not think it is too small. I think it is perfect for a lot of Nextel customers. (That refreshing wallpaper thing is really cool!)

I'll let you know how the reception and the battery life on the phone is later today or tomorrow. Overall I can say the 830 is a real nice phone. Would I pay $300 for it, I don’t know. Actually I do know, I wouldn't have paid $300 for the phone if I had the 730 or even the 95 for that matter. If I was still on an old i50 and had $300 lying around, I would have thought about upgrading to the 830 then. Honestly it's a real nice phone and I really think I got my money’s worth. Ironicly here’s some more pics (pics don't do much for the phone), I suggest taking a look at it and trying to get you hands on an actual one if you are thinking about buying one. It may sell ya if you like things small.
Feel free to ask any questions if you have any.

WOW...so many morons. Nextel DEFINETELY proifts on the phones when it sells them to its indirect dealers and to new customers as well- they're SO OVERPRICED. I'm an authorized Nextel Representative and the i830 costs me $349.99 from Brightpoint. I then sell it at $299.99 (New Line) or whatever I think the customer will pay because I have a pretty nice commission coming my way at the end of the month so I don't mind losing $50 or so on the phone. Coodwn, I don't know why you would be paying almost $600 for your i830 if you bought it as a dealer. ALSO, don't you have a Tax-ID since you're a business....why you paying tax? If that were an indirect Nextel store that had sold him the phone for $299, then they would have been out $50 because they wouldn't have any commission coming their way since he cancelled. Aren't NRS stores owned by Nextel so essentially he scammed Nextel and not a specific store. Nextel already made money by selling that phone for $299 anyway so SCREW EM....they want to sell their phone at such a ridiculous price AND tie the customer into a 2-year contract. They didn't lose anything and in fact profitted. Only thing is they thought they had tied another person into a 2-year contract and that person cancelled and kept the phone. Oh yeah, and why do all you idiots feel so loyal to Nextel...it's just a company providing you with a service and makin money off your stupid asses. The NRS store in my area told my cousin they'd charge him a $35 upgrade fee in addition to tax. So in the end, it would have come to over the $349.99 I pay Brightpoint for my i830s. So I just order em from Brightpoint like all the other indirect dealers and save myself the head-ache. Basically, I have no sympathy for Nextel but I don't see how Cooden saved anything because he paid $325 if not more and dealers can order from Brightpoint for $349.99. That's All....PEACE OUT FOOLS!!!

Does the clip fit REALLY snug like the "new" i730 clip with wings? I don't want a $300 phone falling off my belt like my i730 did (even if I will only be paying $200 for it... )

Have you tried the Statuslight app on it yet? I went into a Nextel store today and took a look at the guy's i830 and he said that he heard the Statuslight gets screwed up on the i830.

Also, can you customize which wallpapers show on the screen with the randomizer? What about timing? Is it set at every 5 minutes?

Thanks for any info and sorry for all of the questions!

Just having a tax id does not mean you pay no tax. You'd need a tax exmept certificate to get away without paying any tax. Also, the $35 upgrade fee has been around for over 2 years. Its not a surprise to anyone nowadays. Nextel does price gouge you with some of the phones, but thats what you get for being an early buyer to a phone that came out 2 days ago. You want it first? You pay more.

Posted by: ATJ-LINK

I don't pay taxes when I buy inventory for my store- i830s cost me a flat $349.99. Of course, I'm selling them as new activations though. I did keep one for myself and sell a few on ebay though since there were idiots bidding $500. When you order over the phone, they only charge a $15 upgrade fee and then $8.50 for shipping so I don't see why the NRS stores would charge $35.

Posted by: Nextel_Maniac

where did you order these parts? My battery lasts half a day on my i830...:-(

Posted by: Cheryl

I don't recall Nextel EVER apologizing for making a profit???

Why is everyone so upset whether or not Nextel is "making money" It's a god ×××× buisness people... Hello!

Don't be upset that you're not Tim Donahue nor his accountant.

For all of you who want the new phone, buy it and stop ×××××in'about the price. No one is forcing you to buy it & probably not asking you to upgrade it neither. You're the same people that are probably gonna buy the 860 and whine, then the 930 and complain and on & on....

I work for Nextel & I paid 299.99 like everyone else to upgrade, ya know why cause I wanted it first too!

Sorry about the venting, but please................

NRS stores don't necessarily charge it, it happens automatically when doing the swap through FDT. Nextel charges the extra 15 when done at these locations for the time/paper work someone has to do @ 9-11 bucks an hour vs. doing it online = no paper work and a telesales rep @ 6 bucks an hour (no offense to telesales just making an example)

Well, NRS doesnt charge shipping fees. You get the phone RIGHT AWAY. And we copy your phonebook out from the old phone. That right there should be worth the extra $11.50 difference ($35 vs $15 + $8.50). The upgrade fees suck, but hey, Nextel isnt gonna change their ways anytime soon. Again, if you want the newest phone, you pay more. There are plenty of people who are gonna wait a couple months and buy the $830 when it goes down to under $200, which I am sure is gonna happen.

Quick comment....People are upset because Nextel ties the customer up into a 2-year contract and makes a decent profit off the sale of the phone as well. Whereas, for example, T-Mobile only ties the customer up for one year and often loses money on the phones or breaks even. Not that I like T-Mobile- their service sucks (but they pay us way more than Nextel when we sign up a customer). With Nextel, they only let motorola make their phones so of course they're going to charge more for their phones....there's no competition. A T-Mobile customer who thinks a Samsung phone is overpriced can go buy the Nokia or Ericsson phone for instance. However, Nextel customers who want to upgrade have no choice but to buy the overpriced Motorola phone. I like Nextel though and don't really give 2 ××××××××s if the phone doesn't have a camera because it does what I need it to do- CALL PEOPLE!!! Speakerphone's more important to me than a camera on my phone- OF COURSE I will get myself the i860 and then the i930 when they come out. But when it comes down to one or the other- I'd prefer the speakerphone over the camera. Personally, I have an E-715 and got bored of the camera after a couple days and then gave the phone to my mother because I got sick of the dropped calls and she doesn't really need walkie-talkie since she barely uses the phone in the first place (She used 12 minutes total last month LOL) So, Nextel costs more but in the end it's worth it- you get better service!

Posted by: firefly33

Do the keys touch the LCD display at all, or is there a gap like on the i730?

Posted by: KiNG Of CeLLZ

is anyone else having problems with the speaker in ther i830? mine breaks up every once and a while and i have to keep it on 5 otherwise its real scratchy sounding.

Posted by: jj1814

D@MN! I never looked at the i830 next to v60 pics until now! NOW I know how small the 830 is.

Y'all have got me thinkin now *hmmmm*

So if I sell the i730 on ebay or somewhere, EVERYTHING is in my SIM (which I will keep), incl. my phone number? I dont have to worry about clearing anything out of the phone?

Posted by: privax

i was wondering about the quality of the speaker also...

Posted by: skadoo323

i think there is a gap

Posted by: skadoo323

some corporate accounts dont get charged upgrade fees and shipping.

Posted by: AEguyNYC5

oh no this isnt good

Posted by: KiNG Of CeLLZ

lol its coo ae i think i got a bad 1 cuz sum1 else i wuz talkin to worked fine

Posted by: kco19

Just the record, mine sounds good. No problems.

Posted by: Matt

I think I remember reading that the i830's loudness isn't as loud as the i730 because of the smaller size of the i730.

But for the record, I'd rather have a smaller speaker. Sometimes the i730 was too ×××× loud at times.

Posted by: ewrcsr1

does anyone know for a corporate brand new account with a one year contract...how much will the i830 cost.
Thanks In Advance

I only got charged for the phone and shipping. Cost me 199 plus 8 for shipping. Perks of my company discounts

Posted by: KStrike155

You don't need to sign a contract with a corporate plan. If you want the $50 rebate in ADDITION to your $199 phone, you DO need to sign one. I talked with a woman on Telesales today and she said I would not need to renew my plan.

Signing the agreement only gets you locked into Nextel longer and a $50 rebate.

Thats not true really. Most Corp account do have contracts with service agreements just like any other account has. Only the really big accounts might have something with no ETF or no service agreements, but its not common. Its more common for gov accounts than it is for Corp accounts.

Corp/Ind accounts only get discounted phone prices with a 2 year contract. 1 year contract price is same as everyone else. So the i830 is $199.99 with 2 year price, and 1 year price is $349.99

Posted by: KStrike155

Hmm...

Maybe the rep I talked to was just one of those dumb reps.

It would be sweet for me to be able to NOT have to sign on for another 2 years (not that I'm unhappy with Nextel or anything... but ×××× happens)

Whatever. Either way, I'm getting the phone for less than $200.

Damm, why does motorola mess with success ? I really dont want to buy new batteries for this phone!

They are not "messing with success". They are just making the batteries different on purpose so that you HAVE to buy a new one. More money for Moto/Nextel! Believe me, there will be NO way you can get an i730 battery into the tiny i830.

As for the standard battery, I am really interested in how it will look. Definitely post up some comparison pictures when you get the door (which will be in, what, 3 weeks... oops nope it's been delayed sorrrrrrry that'll be 8 weeks you have to wait for your battery door sir )

You have complete control over that.

You can configure it so that the light will STAY red forever until you get service back.

OR, you can configure it so that it blinks, say, every 4000ms at a rate of 10ms.

All of the other signals MUST blink for a specified time that you set.
Blinks every 2000ms for 20ms... whatever you want to do.

Besides the size of the phone, whats the difference between an 730 and a 830. This reminds me alot of the i95 vs Bobby Jones battle that went one a while back. The Camera phones are the only worthy purchases in my opinion.

Posted by: nexteltier1

Yes and yes. Though if you have insurance on the phone I advise you to call in, because your account will still show the equipment is an i730, and when you file a claim, all you will get in return is an i730.

I tried nextel and liked them a great deal. However i cancelled and went back to Tmobile for this very reason. I don't (wont) use Web Based SMS. When (if) Nextel gets MOSMS, as well as starts supporting international sms, i may give them another look. Until that time i'll stick with a provider that does.

The sad part is Nextels WEB is actually faster than anything else i've ever used on SPCS, ATTWS GSM, Cingular GSM, or TMObile. I miss Nextels web, but not enough to do without MOSMS!

i just called a half hour ago and they told me it was on backorder but asked me to confirm what color i had ordered.. when i said silver they said yeah definitely on backorder.. do those of you that ordered the copper have the same problem? maybe those are the only ones that are being shipped

Posted by: nextel4lfe

Wow, some of you guys just have no luck I guess. Like i said, called and ordered one today at 1pm eastern, got a call at like 130 or so in my office confirming everything, and then getting processed, and it shipped for me already. I should have it tomorrow. Sometimes it just pays to have patience I guess.

Posted by: kaneman

Sheesh I've been away from HoFo for too long. I have the bronze 830... I'll take pics tomorrow and post 'em for y'all... I didn't realize the phone was just released. I've had it for like two weeks!!!!! We got three in mid-may. I guess it helps that we just did an account consolidation and moved the bulk of our business to Nextel (now upwards of 275 lines). The 830 is the first 'normal' sized Nextel I've ever used but I've had reports from one of our other users that it sucks for RF sensitivity. Personally, I don't care... I LOVE the size of it.

Posted by: KiNG Of CeLLZ

yea 830 has like a ×××× pierceng(sp?) sound when its on 7 with some of my ringtones lol, well my 830 is going back today since they dont have any for me to exchange it, so im gonna buy it from a different location so hopefully my new one will work

If you have an i830 with a i730 sim card and file a claim, it will get denied the moment you tell them you have a i830 and they see you dont have the SIM of an i830 active. They will then ask for proof of purchase and you'd need to fax that over to them. Otherwise you are SOL. And a denied claim usually leads to problems with other claims down the road. I've seen people file a claim wrong, then weeks later lose their phone and then have their new claim denied because of the previous false claim. Its a huge mess.

Bottom line, never swap sim cards if you have insurance. Take it to a service center and have the phonebook copied over. It will save tons of headaches later on if you ever file a claim.

Posted by: DigitalJEM

Just broke down and bought the 830.. not only does the speaker impress me... but I feel like i'm holding something very small.. smaller than anything imagineable awesome in my book

Posted by: ern1976

I agree my speaker sucks also. Just got it today and am real upset about the speaker quality. It has a buzz or scratchy sound to it when the volume is up past 5 or 6.

I am a Paramedic, i need the speaker as loud as it gets many times!

I may try to have them exchange it, depending on what others have to say about this same issue.

I couldn't agree more. I did the same thing, the speaker on the i88 is much better, fuller sounding. The 730 is tinny and hard to hear going down the freeway.

Posted by: CTzFinest

My speaker is great. However my rant goes to the vibrate function which seems to be very light. Can't feel it when it's on my athletic shorts but on a belt with some jeans it's fine. All around love the phone.

Ordered mine Tuesday at 8:30am and was told it would be to me by thursday. Checked the web site and it said backordered on wed.Called telesales and he checked and said it he had no idea when it would ship and said they would email us when it was shipping. He said if you want a bronze phone I could have it in 2 days. Silvers where really backed up.This sucks!!
I called an area dealer and asked him if he could get one for me. He said they get them from a different warehouse and could have one the next day because of his dealer status.Don't know if that is true or not but very tempeted to cancel my telesale order.

blackberry.. web based text messaging does NOT work on the blackberry I can't send messages.. its really agravating because when I can reach someone I want to have the ability to send them a text message but nooo also if someone sends me one it won't tell me where its from.. no number at all. Also if I every were able to send one if I were sending it to a nextel customer as a quick note to call me.. it wouldn't be very quick for them would it? they'd have to go to the web message menu click the text message link then wait for the message to load.. and god forbid they not have a signal long enough for it to load.. sorry haha it just aggravates me because there are so many inconveniances that seem little but when they occur they're huge.. I'd like mo-sms

Posted by: Joel930

We have certainly all noticed by now that the i830 is definitely smaller than the i730. So many Questions and answers have been posted here. Basically, as far as the i830 is concerned, the only question i'm left with is, Is it too small?
Lets take the i95 for example. The i95 is a pretty good size, it fits in the palm of your hand, and its not too big (even with the extended battery and door installed). The i730 is probably just the perfect size. That leaves us with the i830, again-Is it too small?
For the people that have used the i830, its obviously nowhere near the size of something like the Panasonic GD55 (which is pretty much un-usable do to its size), but is it too small-please share your opinions.
Thanks.

Posted by: HaTaX

Text messaging is really a pain on the phones the way it is now, after having a blackberry and using the pin feature with friends that have blackberrys, I'd never send a text message again.

That being said, it's sad that nextel even shut off the SMS ability on the blackberry, it's in the firmware, was even in the manual that went to the FCC and not the one on the nextel webiste, as to how to recieve them and send them..

Now I just send it to phone#@tmomail.net and that works. Or whatever carrier you're going to Phone#@messaging.sprintpcs.com, etc.. And since I have a BES server, the messages normally lag no more than 30 seconds

Posted by: ChiEf2

I havent gotten the i830 yet, but it seems pretty small. I'm kinda happy that the 860/930 are around the same size as the i730, because thats what most nextel users are used to.

Posted by: junyadee

Ordered mine yesterday morning, "Oh we sold so many silver that they are low in stock but yours should be there by Friday" checked online "back ordered" rrrrrrr!!!! 5 hours later "your item or items has been shipped, now its gotta a tracking number on a fedex truck destined for a Friday delivery. oooweee!!!! so I guess they are just chickens with their heads cut off not knowing what the right hand is doing. Good luck to those who placed their orders.

Very true ::nod::

Nextel = Big

well it use to until the i830 came out but now i'm guessing people are gonna start switching to nextel because of the small phones

Posted by: XxOTHERGROUNDxX

i dont think its too small for nextel. theyre finally making the necessary steps to compete with providers that have phones that i can easily fit in my nose (i have a normal sized nose btw)

and yea it is gonna attract a new crowd.... most likely many will be female... most will jus be semi-trendy but still looking for a solid provider which nextel has been for years.

so amen to moto + nextel... do the damm thang

Posted by: GregGebhardt

The i830 is not TOO small. It does take a little getting used to but so did the i730.

I do think that it is as small as I would like to see. So far I like it very much.

Favorites: speaker quality on speaker phone and reception is much better than i730.

Dislikes: got the larger battery but Nextel BOed my door for two weeks.

Posted by: GregGebhardt

I have found my speaker is far superior. Has much better sound quality than my i730. Makes using the speaker phone a pleasure.

Earpiece volume and quality is also improved.

Ringer volume on close to max is TOO loud!

Posted by: Joel930

Wirelessly posted (Nextel i95cl: MOT-85/01.04 UP.Browser/4.1.26m.737 UP.Link/4.2.3.5h)

So you all think that its not too small. Well thats good. How about the keypad, is that too small? Some people have bigger hands.

Posted by: mcpaulyb

I've been waiting for a long time for NEXTEL to come out with a phone this small. The i730 is a brick in comparison. You can throw the i830 in your pocket, it's so small.

I think that it's really a beautiful phone, very simple looking, yet modern with it's polished brushed metal panels. It's more like a black phone with silver (or bronze) panels.

I love it!!!

-Brian

- The wallpaper question you can't pick what backgrounds for it to choose when refrehsing. (so I have a few wallpapers that I uploaded in, but also the sailboats, desert rock and sunflower get rotated in there) I wish there was a way around that. Maybe if I save some of my files as sailboat and overright the current file. We'll see. Timing is 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 1 hour...
- I havent tried the status light mod, I never did it to my 730 either...
- The phone fits on the clip real snut. I think the phone is light enough were if you bump it on something it won't want to go anywhere. It is a lot lighter than the 730, and it is onto the clip real snug.

After using the phone for a half day I can tell that the battery may be an issue. I only used the phone last night for 50 minutes between the radio and phone and the battery was on the last bar. Low battery was never flashing, but I used the calculator and web a lot on the phone. I have a feeling this may be an issue for a lot of people. I wish there was a way to get a high performance battery, but keep it the same size as the current slim one that's in the phone.
Also I can tell the phone seems to have a little better reception than my 730 did. I could tell there was more service in some places I would normally get no bars or only 1 bar with my 730.
The two way radio I could tell for sure a lot less problems. Recently I was having some issues with connecting on the radio with some people. (it'd take a few tries sometimes...)
I really like using the 830. When it's in my pocket or on the clip it really feels like nothings there. When I'm using the phone or the radio, the phone feels real small. I like it though.
One thing I noticed was the stop and speaker button on the top was kind of hard to get to vs the 730. On the 730 it stuck out a lot more, and you could push it with less effort. With the 830 its a little more work, anyone else notice that?
Also anyone catch the phone working slower than your fingers? I can flip the phone open and go to phonebook, or recent calls, and it seems like the phone/software is a few steps behind me. (and I am not even going that fast) Anyone else see a little delay when they push buttons on the 830?
Overall, real nice phone. I just dont think it's worth $300.
Shane

I agree. I have had a v60 through work in addition to my nextel. The v60 is about the perfect phone other than the lack of being an iden device and the huge antenna. The size is perfect and it's got enough features for me. I love the fact that the 830 is about the same size.

Posted by: ballersht

As far as I know all you have to do is take your upc type label off the box and mail that.

my i830 defintely gets better reception than my 730

On the rebate form it says you need a copy of the sales receipt as well.

Posted by: shanezam203

yeah most nextel rebates need a reciept, upc, and rebate form.

Nooo, you don't understand

By onboard SMS, we mean that you can go to your messages menu, hit compose message, and send the message, without touching the web browser.. Nextel phones are not setup out of the factory to do this

Posted by: wjpooley

Ok, so back to the main idea behind this thread. Do you think they have any intention of actually adding the M0-SMS to their system? Especially with the i860 coming out later this year? Wouldn't they almost have to add this to their system to enable the sending of pictures from the phone and other things they might think of, or could they accomplish this with their web-based thing they have now?

Posted by: zedhawk

ok i called the questions number on the rebate form which is 800-298-8450 and i asked the customer service rep and he informed me that the packing slip is the same as a receipt. and he also informed me that if i wanted to i can give him my information and they will create a file and then when they recieve the rebate it will expedite it. so i figured i would give the information which to be exact is the name address and moedl and cell number.

hmm so with this 50 dollar rebate and a 2 yr extension how much would the phone come to total after all rebates received?

also, i have a few people asking to buy my i730...what is a decent price to ask - very minor scratches - and i would load it up with any ringtones and papers they want - few people have offered me 75 - i was really looking for 100 but hey whatever i guess - let me know what you all think about what i should get for the phone...thanks!!

btw - no mods on the phone - full OEM - just ringtones and papers.

thanks everyone!

Posted by: Chaoss

sell your i730 on ebay and you get about $150

Posted by: shanezam203

Yeah I sold my 730 for $150 a few days ago. I got the 830 for $199 at flat rate pricing. I was told by customer care that I could send in the $50 rebate. So I'm going to give it a try, if it goes through great. If not, then the 830 cost me $50.
Shane

Posted by: DJ NOOCH

yea 150 would be great - thats what i really wanted to sell it for 75 in my eyes is wayy too cheap...

i just still dont know if i wanna spend any money on an 830 period being that the 860 and 930 are soon to follow...ugh wanting new things suks lol

I know I cant delete sailboats, desert rock, and sunflower but can I save my backgrounds as the same file name and over write the 3 default nextel wall papers and try to get them out of my phone?

I believe you have to get the 2 year contract to be eligible for the $50 rebate. (not an additional 50)

uhhh?

I sometimes have a hard time hearing people when talking on my i730. Does the 830 seem to be louder or is it about the same?

Posted by: jaimej

ditto.. still said backorder last night but i just received it an hour ago.. its even sweeter than i thought!

Posted by: supertoy7

Samer here. Got it early this morning. I called to activate it, and was told that there was a minimum 9 hour wait to be activated. So I said what the heck and tried it anyway. Guess what...it's working. DC and phone both work. This is one instance it's nice that customer service was wrong.

Note to self...read other threads first.

ok yay now im officially confused..
ok..
when i bought my 730 they asked if i wanted to extend my contract 1 or 2 yrs
i said 2 yrs and the phone was 50 bucks cheaper then if i extended only 1 yr (i believe)

now lets say i call telesales order the phone and extend for 2 yrs...
i get 50 off the phone straight from them correct? so now i dunno its like $250?

then i send this rebate in for an ADDITIONAL 50?
and then the end result is that i paid 200 for the phone (plus taxes and upgrade fees ofcourse)

am i looking at this the wrong way?
bla im confused lol

Posted by: shanezam203

say you got the phone for $300 and renewed your contract 2 years, you can send in the $50 rebate. 12 weeks from now the phone would now cost you $250. But on your bill you'll see $300 for the phone...
Hoped I helped some, Shane

First and foremost, let me just go ahead and say that the i830, despite many negative reviews here on HoFo, and other places, is one heck of a phone, and probably one the the nicest that Motorola has put out for Nextel...well, here comes the negative about this phone...I have had this phone since Tuesday morning @ 11:00 am...and here's what I have found out to be true so far...

Number one...the battery. Well, we all know that Motorola put the slim battery in the i830 to keep down on the size of the phone. That was an ingenious idea, but what I think some of the higher ups at Moto didn't realize is that people need to talk on their phones for more than just two hours out of the day...now I know that they are making a battery door that will allow the use of the standard sized battery...lets just hope it doesn't look all that well. For the most part, my experience with this battery on the phone has been rather grim. I talk on it for about an hour and it drops down to the last bar...not good Moto. I have since charged my phone once already today and it is already down to it's last bar again..looks like I'll be charging it again before the days end. Now keep in mind that this is just talking...no internet surfing or anything like that....hopefully that standard battery door will be out as soon as possible.

Number two is the enamel paint on the phone...now, the black on bronze looks really good and so does the black on silver...which is what I personally have...the silver i830. I have since worn down the enamel to the white undercoat where the front of the flip (just below the outer LCD) goes in and out of the holster...I would say that this is a big design flaw here...and to compensate for this, I bought a BodyGlove case for it which fits really snug! While I am on the object of cosmetics, let me just say that I have accumulated quite a vast array of dust under my external LCD screen already. Not major. but again, an annoyance to me...for the most part. Personally, this next part is my absolute most biggest pet peeve. The phone's keypad will touch the internal LCD screen causing it to leave marks on the screen...just like what happened with the old i90's and some i95's...I already ahve the impression of some of the keys on my screen...but again, the bodyglove has remedied this problem...atleast from letting it get anyworse. The phone's vibrator is not as strong, and therefore is not as loud..which I think is a good thing...sometimes, while in class, the vibrate mode would be loud enough that people would hear it going off from the other side of the classroom.

Now comes to the problems I've found with the software (which my version is R2B.00.01). Well, for starters, this phone, just like its big brother, the i730, has the keypad lag that we all talked about. I can type a few words on the keypad, then look up, and it still hasn't finished yet...now normally this would happen after you typed about 15 words or so, but this happens from the first word on...hopefully the next round of updates will alleviate this problem...another glitch I have found with the phone is that if you direct connect someone else right after you get done talking to the previous person..(you know how after you get done, the last person you talked to would be on the outer LCD for a few seconds)...well, on my phone, when someone else DC's me while another name is on the external LCD, the original name will still be there, even though I am not talking to that person anymore...once I open the flip and close it again, we're good to go.

The all important problem I have discovered is with the signal...personally, this phone shows a good strong signal whenever it's there...however, the flaw I have with this phone is that whenever my old i88 would show no bars but still have service, this phone will simply go to "No Service" right away...personally that needs to be solved...however one good thing is that while my mom's i90 will read one bar, this thing reads four...

There is just some things that I have found with the i830...still think it's a great phone by far...but still some things that need to be fixed upon...take it for what it's worth...hope maybe it will be useful in your purchase of an i830...

Cheers!!!

ok yea thats what i was asking - u HAVE TO send in the rebate to get the 50 bucks off for your renewing correct?

next question

Very good review. I agree and disagree with some of it, but, some stuff is just opinion as well I havent had a chance to play with it yet, since its just charging right now, but so far looks awesome. It starts up much faster then my 730, and even though im at work in NYC, and we normally get perfect signal in the office, there are areas where my 730 will go down a bar to 3 total. Sitting next to an 830, its at 4 bars flawless. One thing I hate about the 730 is it can go from 4 bars to zero to 2 to no service, within a minute lol The 830 is much more stable though in the RF department, and seems to pull signal better to begin with. Those that say its the 730 just smaller are pretty much wrong in my opinion, because of subtle changes as well as large changes, such as the RF. But thats only my opinion

I have to agree with you on that. I think the 830 is a real nice phone. If anyone is thinking about getting it and has the cash, take the jump. One thing I dont like about the phone is the new calculator version. There must be a way for me to upgrade or in my case downgrade to the version in the 730 or even back to the 95 version... Any help, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Shane

Wouldn't they almost have to add this to their system to enable the sending of pictures from the phone and other things they might think of, or could they accomplish this with their web-based thing they have now?
sadly.. this won't force them to use mo sms.. there are web based solutions thats how sprint does it.. so nope.. no luck there.. they might do the right thing but they don't have to

Posted by: jazntiger

it's so sad for me to enable MO-SMS on the software/firmware/whatever-it-is-you-enable and see the Text Outbox and see how easy/fast it would be to create a text msg and send it to any of the numbers in my phonebook, recent calls, etc. So very depressing. I really hope they do begin enabling it soon. How does cost play a role in implementing it? I mean, what are the cost differences involved with web-based and then MO?

Thanks.

Someone mentioned the Desktop Charger. The i830 definitely does not fit into the Desktop Charger for the i730. I played around with the i830 to try and make it fit, but no success. Oh well, at least the data cable and car charger fit!

its probably more expensive because its sent over a normal connection rather then a data connection and you have to have an access number.. but I can't imagine it being THAT much more expensive the biggest cost would probably be setting up the actual servers

I've had all the Nextel phones from the I90 up. All of the flip phones for some reason have less RF to my home which is in a fringe area compared to the candy bar style phones like the I85 or I80.

I was disappointed with the reception on my 730, but I just got the silver I830 and it is much better in rf reception than any prior flip phone. I've been very happy with. There's always a trade off, some complain about the smaller or lesser battery life, get a cigarette lighter adaptor. Otherwise the phone works great.

Check out the Body Glove case, I purchased the Scuba version only difference is there is a all black version and the scuba version which is highlighted with thin white lines. It looks great, and does not add much to size, but I was paranoid about dropping the phone, now not so much a worry, cuz you know the times is going to come that you drop it.

Later.

Greg

I too, like all of you, noticed the much improved RF frequency in the i830...HOWEVER...I have noticed that the phone will not hold on to no bars of service...it will simply go straight to "NO SERVICE" when my i88 would read zero bars...

Posted by: Matt

My i730 service was pretty bad at times in my house. It would never go over 2 bars.

Now with my i830 there hasn't been a spot in my area since I've had the phone, that isn't less than 3 bars.

Posted by: scubby11

Wow with the better RF on this phone it seems tempting to get as my i730 get horrid reception at certain spots and trouble tickets and trouble tickets are useless.

And I doubt the desktop charger will be the same looking at the phone.

Will the i830 battery fit in an i90/i95? If so, I wonder if it will fit under a slim battery cover since they are smaller in width.

Posted by: Nextel_Maniac

no because the contacts are on the side of the battery for the i830, not on the bottom like on the i95

$449 no contract
$199.99 w/ 2 yr

Dont think there is a 1 year. Everywhere seems to be talking about 2 year.

Posted by: nexteltier1

It rivals the i90 in terms of reception. Motorola seems to have learned from their i730 mishap.

it fits in the charger, you need to push the release button and swith the gray plastic insert with the one that is designed for the i830

Posted by: larryz

went and looked at the 830 and am very un-impressed. I'll just wait for the 930 in january and keep using my 730 (Which I like alot) Since I wear it on my belt size is not that big of an issue. Except when I had the 95..that size was a big deal.

since i see people still askin about this i figure i'd bring it to the top
