i think its ugly as sin.
yes its small. whoopdie doo.
it looks like somthing that fell outa my pooper
the buttons feel weird.
the button for the battery door sticks out too far and it feels like im pushing that more than the speaker button.
i wont be buying one cuz its ugly, plain an simple.
thats my opinion, im glad everyone who has one here loves it, im not looking for a small ugly phone, so im not buying one. if i was looking for a smaller phone, i would get the 830, and just change the housing as soon as i could.
if you love it, great im happy for you, itsnothing personal so dont blow a gasket and reply like im making a personal dig at you.
i dont like onions, some people do, ive yet to have someone yell at me for not likeing them, so no need to do it to me over a cellphone

actually gps never worked for me while riding the train on a 730. on the 830 it took no more then 5 seconds using 5 satellites

I just received my i830 and I have to give my initial impressions. I have always clamored for Nextel to make a smaller phone and boy this is almost too small (I never thought id say that when it comes to Nextel). I havent had a chance to use the phone much, but there seems to be a slight hiss (this is not present when using the speaker phone though-strange.)

Visually the phone is a stunner. It is a pretty simple looking phone but the brushed silver (im sure the bronze looks cool too) is really amazing. The way it interacts with the glossy black on the sides and top of the phone. Well I think its very refined and professional looking.

Other thoughts- I do not like the button to release the back cover as this makes it more difficult to access the speakerphone and call list. The key pad seems slightly stiff, but this is really a minor complaint.

I only hope that the hissing that I have heard is due to poor signal strength because I love this phone otherwise. The ideal would be this phone with a screen size similar to the i95 (sounds like the i860 although that phone looks significantly bigger). I have zero interest in a cheap camera on my phone.

I have to disagree with this thread. If people didn't complain in this world we wouldn't really have any change. Imagine if no one complained about the status light issue on the i730. Somone wouldn't of taken the time to write a nice java app so we could have a status light. Imagine if people didn't complain about how big Nextel phones usually are, I bet Nextel wouldn't even have released a smaller phone.

I'm not saying that people should wine about the little things but where do you draw the line. Its a very fine line and people have different views on different things.

All I'm trying to say is without complaints we wouldn't have change.

I disagree. Us complaing honestly doesn't do much for the big scheme of things with Nextel and Motorola.

No matter how voiceterous(sp) we are, we are less than 3% of Nextel subscribers.

I guarantee if this forum wasn't here, we'd still have a smaller phone because Nextel wants to compete.

They aren't here to accomodate our every needs, they are here to compete with other companies and make the most of our money.

Couldn't you just create wallpapers and name it the names as the originals, load it and it will overwrite the original wallpapers?

How do they (any wireless carrier) know what people want? They usually set up focus groups to find out what people dislike and like about certain phones. This usually involves people complaining about what they dislike about the phones. This is what they do when building new models. There has been people in these forums that have been a part of these focus groups.

If you had crappy signal in your area and enough people complain Nextel will try to fix things.

I'm talking about complaining in general allows other people know there is something wrong, not everyone may agree with that person but they still have a right to complain

this is a forum though, this is where the community can come together and complain, praise, share information, and just interact. i agree we are less then 3% of the nextel population....but we are a centrally located 3%. That shouldnt matter though....cause this is a forum not set up by nextel or other subscribers for focus groups, but set up by the community and for the community.

he said "service fee"

lol

hope thats what he meant

I wish I could chg it to the orange color as well...

Posted by: nextel50

I am not saying no complaining at all. What I am saying is the people that complain about all the petty little ×××× (2mm play etc.) are just being stupid. For the record... Focus groups are carefully picked, and usually dont involve people like us (people that they know actually know a thing or two about cell phones, lol) As was stated before we are a mere 3% of customers, and more than likely, nextel probably hates most of us, so why would they care about us, lol. Figure it out 15 mill or whatever it is time 3% 450000 people, not huge loss, they pick more up in a week. I just get annoyed with people and there little complaints. I didnt mean to start holy war over it. I just feel if your gonna complain do it about stuff that matters, and that they can actually change, i.e. reception. Anyhow, thats my piece. Ill admit I was drinking when i wrote it, but glad I wrote it.

Posted by: Angela_J

I concur the GPS seems to work noticably better on the i830. I used to hardly ever be able to get coords in my car but I never have a problem now.

I'm glad someone posted something about this. I thought I was the only one that got a phone that is hard to open with one hand. This 2mm does make a difference. I'm hoping that some tech can give us the inside on how to fix this.

The funniest part about this thread is you are actually complaining about other people complaining. I just thought I would throw that in.

Posted by: YoDude

I think the 830 is a cute phone, lol. It looks like it will fit in a purse or pocket book with no problem. Also the bronze color goes with so many shoes and outfits. Who needs another phone?

Posted by: MobileEmpire

tried that didn't work.

so lets say i got lost while driving to a destination, would i be able to call 411 and they can locate me on a GPS i830. Would they be able to give me driving directions to my destination without me tell them where i am located?

Nah but I like the i830 so far. It gets better service, and it's small. The two main things I need in a phone.

I don't need a camera phone (had one with verizon. The fun dies out in about a week).

××××, I remember when I first got nextel and had my i1000plus. Those phones were hot back then, then i85 came out... Everything that's new gets old. Soon the 860/930 will be the past and there will be another thread like this. "Waste on 1660"?

Good point, but, i just get annoyed when people bring up little petty things. In regards to the 'what matters' response (sorry dont feel like quoting it' I was meaning what matters to nextel, not to you buddy. Nextel probably doesnt care what matters to you.

I had this problem.

Call the Customer Service number printed on your monthly invoice and asked to be transfered to the Tech department. They will update your GPS almanic (sp?).

now days consumers want a smaller cell phone and nextel has now provided that option to its consumers. this in turn helps nextel. another thing to consider is that now days a lot of places are banning the use of or even not allowing camera phone inside particular building or in certain areas. i know for a fact that the court houses in MD have banned them as well as certain companies such as northop grumman have restrict camera phones from being in certain areas of the offices.

Posted by: GregGebhardt

There were times my i730 would not even get a fix but the i830 does it quickly. Nextel got RF performance up on the i830 as I have not had one dropped call.

Posted by: skadoo323

wow it def is alot faster then my i730 too! very nice.

Posted by: KStrike155

I called Telesales to order my i830 yesterday and asked the woman if it was overnight shipping (because I knew that Nextel did that...) and she says to me "No, I can check when it will get to you though." So she tells me Tuesday. OK that's cool, none of the stores around here will have it til next week anyway. Today it comes in the mail!!!

Woohoo!

This thing is SAWEEETTT!

By the way I got silver:

Software Version: R2B.00.01
Total Data Space: 3123.13KBytes
Total Prog Space: 3968.00KBytes

I thought they were only supposed to have 2MB? I'm not complaining. Seems like RF is much better than the i730 from what little use I have had. We shall see.

dope dope... nice surprise....

get me one too.... i love surprises

Posted by: nemov3

was ups or what? cause i dislike ups right now my package is supposed to be here today and its not even close.

Posted by: XxOTHERGROUNDxX

couldnt this also be due to the newer version of telenav on the 830?

correct me if im wrong but didnt the 730 come with 2.2 and the 830 comes with 3.0??

Posted by: Lexball50

I don't know what some people are talking about, but the I830 is a pretty cool phone. I thought that the copper was ugly from the pictures, but the cooper looks better than the silver in person. So I went with the cooper. Cool as hell looking.

Posted by: XxOTHERGROUNDxX

1. use rss

2. if u got a usb cable, return it and get a serial one.

3. yes... use phonebook companion

ill go into more detail later .... gotta run.... maybe someone else will pick up my slack

Posted by: KStrike155

It was FedEx.

My only dislike about the phone so far: the little rubber contact cover doesn't snap into place like my i730 used to.

Also, in regards to the keys touching the screen, I heard someone say that they did. It doesn't look like it to me... they added little black rubber things to keep that from happening.

Do I really need to swap my SIM with customer care though? It works fine without doing it... I just don't want to lose my phone for hours on end while they have a backlog of swaps.

from what ive read there should be no issues with not swapping the sim, and using the one from the i730 but i could be wrong.

I swapped sims and they had my phone working in 5 minutes.

Posted by: PeteC19076

If your still trying to do a phonebook swap you can use rss to do it.

Posted by: cor9123

whats rss and how do i do that?(i activated the phone by calling up so i dont know what rss is)

Posted by: amc

There are things like Iden Companion Pro and Phonebook Manager that are downloads from the Moto Iden section (free too).

Hi All,

I was just looking at the new i830 specs on Nextel's site and I see that one of the Java Apps is "1KTV multimedia." Isn't this the same "TV" broadcast thing that Sprint has available on their network / phones? What exactly is it?

Posted by: ephyouckay

www.hypermods.com If its a tri color LED i bet they can solder three different colored LEDS on each side....

Posted by: hoppyjr

You don't have to swap SIM's, but you should let Customer Care know that you are using the i830 so that it is covered by your insurance and/or service plan in case something bad happens to it.

Posted by: Nextel_Maniac

well...see...that rebate was only for upgrades, not for new customers...hence why the orignal rebate says..."Loyalty has it's rewards"

Just thought I'd tell ya! :-P

When I purchased my i830 from my local retail store it only took about 10 minutes. Towards the end of the sale she asked me to turn off my i730,a couple of minutes later she handed me my i830, up and running. I went back to the office and used the iden phone book utility to move my 300+ contacts over to the i830.

Smooth and fast!

The hissing noise is the only disappointment with this phone. My i730 did not do this. I love the phone, but if the sound quality is sub-par well thats 95% of the importance to me.

I wonder if the i830 will be capable of using WiDEN when it's rolled later this year. This would make 1KTV much more user friendly with the increased throughput.

Some people feel that if it works, you should fix it 'till it don't...

The i1000 is perfect for your application. It's durable, don't owe you anything, and it imparts a level of professionalism that a i305 can't even approach. A simple black flip that slips in and out of suit pockets.
Unless you can realize a savings from GPS that will offset the purchase price; why change?

Some people are complaining about what should be well known and obvoius...like the battery life being shorter...It's a small phone, what do you expect? The numbers are small...ok?...and? It doesn't vibrate like a jackhammer! But they won't return the phone and go back to their 730!

Posted by: mikeruoc

Take it back. Mine does not hiss. Mine sounds better than my i730. I have used it since Tuesday and I am very happy sound quality as it sounds much better to me than my i730 and a few people on the other end have asked if I am talking on my new phone beacuse I sound really good. Also the reception is the best thing about this phone (I guess the size also) I get a steady constant signal and no No Service junk in the middle of an area I know there is service! The batt life could be better but for the size I will live with it.

Just a thought.........

While the bottom connector is the same as the i730 and it seems that the i730 desktop charger can/does work - Is there a slot on the charger to charge a spare battery, like the i90 charger?

I believe that the i730, 205,305, type battery has terminals at the top, where the i830 battery has them on the side.

If the i703 desk charger does have a spare battery slot, does it have the ability to charge the i830 battery?

I have since charged my phone once already today and it is already down to it's last bar again..looks like I'll be charging it again before the days end. Now keep in mind that this is just talking...no internet surfing or anything like that....hopefully that standard battery door will be out as soon as possible.

You know, I'd like to see this door that allows a normal battery to fit into the i830. I don't know if any of y'all who say you're waiting on the normal battery in the mail have taken the battery door off your i830s and noticed it's a special battery made just for the new phone, the battery contacts aren't even in the same spot (on the left, not top and center.)

I really want to crack one open (we're an ASC) but what our service rep is saying is that the two end caps on the sides of the hinge (if you look at a picture of the side, you'll see a little circle where the flip is held on) have to be broken off to get to the hinge screws (kind of like how you have to peel off the i1000 sticker).

i went to a nextel store/service center and i upgraded to the i830- the guy was very rude and even asked if he could wait on another person who was in line Behind me before doing my upgrade i was nice and said okay
so anyway i think he was an ××× so i just want to know-
he charged me a $35 account set up fee-
Even tho i already have an account this was an upgrade and contract extension
i questioned it and he said that the computer does it automatically and he can't not charge it
is this true or did i get screwed????

They aren't here to accomodate our every needs, they are here to compete with other companies and make the most of our money.

I agree. The average user age of the people on these forums are under 25 and a lot are under 20. There are a lot of older people that are Nextel subscribers that are still using i1000's and don't care about the new phones. These new phones are aimed at those that are younger for the most part.

You need to keep a charger handy, even with the larger battery you will not get double the time from it. This is a small phone and putting a huge battery in it would have decreased it's appeal. For most the slim battery that comes with it is MORE than enough, for the one who use their phone more the standard battery will be the answer. I get thru the day now on the slim but today had only a 1/4 charge left.

For you, I suspect you need to go back to a previous phone that hald a MAX battery or use a landline.

Look on eBay. They can be had for a lot less. I got mine for 26 dollars picked up in NYC. It's the OEM one also.

Its not an account setup fee, its a upgrade admin fee actually. Its a charge Nextel charges on all in store upgrades. Telesales only charges $15 just so you know.

yea i called today because im thinking of getting that 830 for my gf. found out i could get it for $199. but i think im gonna wait a couple months because when the 860 comes out, im hoping this 830 go down. i aksed her about signing another contract, and she said i had to sign no agreement. but i dont beielve that because back when the 730 came out i got it at my corporate price for one of the guys under my account and they made be agree to another year on that line. so who knows....

Yea... that's about what happened here.. went to look, ended up racking up a bill and leaving with a life note

Posted by: DigitalJEM

it's kinda messed up to charge a loyal customer a setup/admin fee...

you know, that brings something up in my head... I thought when you activate a phone, somewhere in the activation it says that they charge $35 per phone for activation, but no more than $70 per account. If I paid that original $35 (3-1/2 years ago), and $35 to upgrade from the i1000 to the i85... should the upgrade to the i90, i95, i730 and i830 have been free? hmmm.. something to think about (probably nothing in the long run, but it sure is interesting).

Phone: $199.99
Upgrade Fee: $15.00
Taxes: $40.78 (7.75 ca taxes)*
Shipping: $8.50

*Also, California state law requires tax on the FULL price of the phones. So, an 830 may only be $200 or $300, but you're taxed on $449.99.

Now, granted the i830 is by far much superior to the i730 as far a signal fluctuations, which as we all know, was the major flaw with the i730...the signal would go from two bars to full service, and then back to zero bars, all in a matter of seconds, without even moving the phone. Well, I have noticed that with my i530...the signal is always one bar higher than the i830...except when they're both at full service. But when they aren't, the i530 seems to hold on to service, or get better service where the i830 will not...anyway, don't know the exact reason behind this post, but I was just pointing out something I am noticing...

Also does anyone know the difference between an i530A and an i530B? On iDENupdate, there are the two different versions...

Cheers,

I really want to crack one open (we're an ASC) but what our service rep is saying is that the two end caps on the sides of the hinge (if you look at a picture of the side, you'll see a little circle where the flip is held on) have to be broken off to get to the hinge screws (kind of like how you have to peel off the i1000 sticker).

You're right about some of this.
Even /\/\oto says you have to destroy parts of the phone to take it apart, lol. You could fire up the heat gun though.

Ok i odered the status light program and i did all of the steps from the users guide and now that i installed in whenever i go to it in java it just keeps asking grant acces.

Posted by: leo777

i dont think the status light app for the i730 is compatiable with the i830 since the 830 doesnt have a disco light

Yes it is, give me a few and i'll give u a link. i730 status app works w/i830.

whats up .. I know this has been discussed in another thread but I cant seem to find it. Does anyone else have a 2 second delay on thier keypad lights when they flip open their 830. Just wondering if thats how moto made it or I got a a bad phone?

yeah I was looking for that in the opetions when I was editing a name in the phonebook and found nothing... whats up with that?

Also anyone else see a glitch in the datebook feature? I have my left arrow set to datebook at view month... And when im in month view on today or go to any day and click new (like add an appointment or reminder...) the screen goes blank white and stays there till I close the flip... any one elses do that?

I was able to over write the sailboats, desert rock, and sunflower with my own backgrounds so now when I have refreshable wall papers on I dont see sunflowers. I was able to put a few ring tones on there. But I tried recording them on low but I turn the volume up on the phone and its way too loud. How do I get the max volume on my ringer to be where it is at now at like 4? (you understand what I mean?)

Thanks, Shane

only the color screen falcons have that issue...the i530 does not have any delay what so ever...

Posted by: KStrike155

You have to use the Statuslight activator first. Send the activator to your phone. Install it, run the program. It will ask for permission twice. Then, go to your e-mail on your computer and go to the e-mail that you received with your reference code. Go to the website that it displays (http://blakertp.homelinux.org/Activator/webact) and type in your email and your reference code (CAPITALIZATION COUNTS). Then copy the two 32 character keys from your phone into the two boxes. Then click activate.

It will tell you you were successful and will then allow you to download the ACTIVATED Statuslight app. Download it, send it to your phone, install. Grant permission twice to the Statuslight app and you're done.

I know, alot to go through for a Statlight but there you have it.

1) That's horrible. Codecannon has worked his ××× off for us for that status light.

2) It won't work anyway. EVERY SINGLE phone has 2 different keys, therefore not allowing you to use your copy of the Statuslight on any other phone. Not even your own phone (I had to pay for the program again to put it on my i830 from my i730).

3) See my post above. That is the ONLY way to get it working, unless you find somebody else's free app (which won't be as good) or you use Codecannon's demo version of his app (which isn't customizable).

I have this as well. I did not see it in another thread already asked. Anyone else have it? Anyone NOT have it? I wonder if its some phones or all.

Posted by: DigitalJEM

My i730, which is a color screen falcon, does not have this 2 second delay problem. If it did, I would have noticed it, cause that's the very first thing I noticed about this phone.

Posted by: cor9123

Notice where i said "i did all of the steps from the users guide "
i already did the activator and all of that and i got an activated one in an email and it doesnt work.

I have two 830's with no delay. Make sure you don't have any JAVA apps running..or the memory full.

Posted by: ironbear26

You need to use cool edit pro and then decrease the "amplitude". Then you can get your volume where you want it.

Posted by: AndrewP

I love this phone, but I have hiss on all phone calls. The hiss is not present when I use the speakerphone. I love the phone, but the hissing noise is terrible. Any ideas??

Posted by: hoppyjr

Something new I noticed and don't like........ when the flip is closed, the oval ring around the top function keys makes an oval mark on my screen - can't seem to clean it off either, looks like scratches!

Maybe it's back to the i305...........

i only paid $150 for the i830. they gave me $50 for the i95 plus i got a discount for working at mbna. so all together only $150. i like the phone a lot. and like i read on this site it feels like nothing is on my belt. had to keep makkng sure it hadn't fallen off. now just need to know where to get the programs to download wallpapers and ringtones. i just bought one from the nextel site and its the cheap ringtone like for the i95. i am kinda computer iliterate so i am sure i will have a hell of a time trying to figure that out

Posted by: Vinny04

Lol i was just woundering which you all like better the silver or the copper i830 and which you got or would get? I like both but i ordered the silver and should have it to tuesday. So if youz would like to reply please do I wanna know if i made a bad move and should of gotten the copper! since i did like them both.. heh

Posted by: vyse

i just saw the copper and silver today, after seein em, id say that the copper is pretty nice and isnt seen too often on phones. id go for the copper man.

Posted by: SamuraiX588

yeah but i mean copper is kinda... dull in a sense... yes it is different but...

i like silver

Posted by: phinger23

im actually likin the copper one. dont know why but i do

Posted by: ONCH

I've had the silver for a while.

The metal (on both) has a clear coat over it to try and prevent scratches. The entire phone has a glossy finish that holds fingerprints well.

Posted by: martind28

I ordered the copper - or as the Nextel gal called it the Bronze - I will have it on Tues as well....I too liked both -but, I thougt I have had th 730 (silver) let's just be different ....

Posted by: Vinny04

hmm dam now i dunno if i want the copper or silver! well im going to think about it more and call my dealer tomorrow and see if he placed the order yet.. ifso i guess imma stick with the silver ifnot maybe ill change

The i830 has the ability to receive SMS directly through PTN@text.nextel.com but you cannot reply through SMS

Posted by: msingewald

On the I95 you can scroll to a person in your contact list and if they have a direct connect # in any of their entries, you get a softkey option to Alert.

On the 830 and I think the 730, the ALert softkey is replaced with the Edit softkey. If you scroll sideways to the DC entry, then you get the Alert key. If the DC entry could be made the first in the entry list, maybe it would work, but as soon as you add a phone # entry, the DC # gets pushed down.

I know I don't need to say this, but, please correct me if I am wrong.

the copper looks terrible in pictures but once you see it youll want it. its hot

If I had to choose, I'd pick copper just to be different.

Posted by: JordanEsh

i really like the looks of the silver i830...and the copper isnt all that bad...but i like black and silver phones...i really wish i could get this phone..but its between this or the 860 and i really want the i860 so gotta go with that...id say just keep the silver..and if you really start to like the copper just wait till the price drops and upgrade again...

Posted by: JordanEsh

and i have a question for you....
are you that lazy that you cant hit the over button a couple times to get to the DC?

Posted by: Homertime

It's not a thing of laziness, it's that on the newer phones they seemed to have taken a few simple features out that we took for granted i.e. the status light, and being able to alert a number even if their DC isn't on your recent calls.

No they're not lazy, rather asking if there was a way to put this feature back to the way it was on the older phones.

In your case I'm sure you've got one hell of a handshake from the workout pushing the right arrow key all those times does for you

Posted by: jj1814

i like silver, period. so my personal choice would be silver.

My car is silver (I've wanted a silver car since jr. high)
all my jewelry is silver
my last 3 cell phones since 2002 have been silver.
my furniture and applicances are silver or have silver accents

Im about to ditch my i730 for the i830, but I'm wondering from the customers that own i830's and have had em for a little bit now, how is the signal? Does it blow like the 730's? I figured it would be pretty much the same considering it's the same phone and the battery door is yet again metal. Thoughts?

Posted by: Tritan

Any pictures of ruggedized cases for the I830 or places to to buy. My local dealer doesn't have anything is stock.

Posted by: msingewald

What a putz...yeah I'm lazy. Point is, it is a feature that seems to have changed, I wanted to know if it had changed or if I was possibly programming the phone wrong.

Thanks for the productive post though. You should be a real asset to the board.

Posted by: Nextel_Maniac

well...perhaps the delay wasn't to get both phones released, but perhaps to get all the phones to the latest software version...

R2B.00.01 & April 10th 2004. I had mine before the official release though.

I feel that the sound quality is better. the PTT is loud have it down a couple of notches.I have had a couple of people comment i was busy is Data 3 error. I don't have internet and wasn't on the phone when they got these errors. I wonder if that is just the nextel system or the phone needs a software patch.Anybody else?

Try www.cellskins.net. Not sure if they have covers for the 830 yet but, I'm sure they are working on them. They work great and really save your phone if you don't like using a case........

Where can you pick up that body glove thing? Also, I saw a post b4 of some other holders for the i830, like a side loading holster/pouch thing. Anyone remember the site?

Buy one of those packs of PDA SCreen covers and make a template of your screen. Cut the cover to fit and apply it to the screen. Just a thought, hope it helps!
