I posted this thread in the telus forum about 3 free reference games from sun and how to install them on the Telus 8900:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=380792

I don't have a verison 8900 so I can't thest it out on those phones. I expect it'll be different. If anyone wants to try it, let me know how it turns out.

If it turnns out good, there may be more games/apps available out there.

cheers

The Verizon version of the 8900 is BREW, and as far as I know J2ME apps are not BREW compatable.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

you're right zaediex of course. Verizon (although personally I think offers good cell service as far as calls) are terrible with their software and those aspects. "I know!!! Let's be ultra greedy and remove java from the phone even though it natively supports it and lets start using this thing called BREW!!! .. That way none of our customers can play games from freelance developers and will have to play our games in which we can put subliminal messages! Wow - I think of the best ideas. Can you hear me now?"

Sorry - had to vent for a second - now back to our regularly scheduled broadcast.

(I do like verizon other than this side of them though).

I said this in another post...but I went to your link and read about putting things in my ASM directory. Well, my Verizon 8900 does not have an ASM directory. Do you think you could send me yours? My email is zembobo@hotmail.com

Thanks.

You got mail...

I'm pretty sure that telus phone also runs brew.
Far as I know, BREW sits between a software application and the Application ASIC level software. This means that BREW applications can be written using Java, C, or C++.

schwarz22, I hope you're wrong for the sake of 8900 users, going out of your way to dissable native Java support sucks.

On the other hand, it can't hurt to try it.

Does the Verizon version have a 'Tools' or 'Games' subsection in the 'DoMore' menu?

If so, you should be able to backup all files on the phone using bitpim and then do a binary grep for 'Tools' or 'Games' and see if any files match. If they do, then they will likely be in a different dir and you could still get the phone to run java stuff. Well, maybe.
Let's see how Zembobo's attempt goes.

There is no 'DoMore' menu. It's a 'GetItNow' menu, in which there are a few options where you are prompted to buy stuff.

---- [edit] -----
the Menu is:
- Get It Now
- MyTonz v.102
- Settings
- Help

Get It Now connects to a website or something when you go to it.

Here's a picture of the US Verizon version of the phone:

(it's not EXACTLY perfect, but very close).

There are a few differences between the buttons/ button labels.

Hmmm, interesting.

From what I can gather, Audiovox makes 6 varieties of the 8900 with varying differences as per the carrier's request.

According to the audiovox oem manual, the top-level menus for the verison version are:

Phone Book
Recent Calls
Messaging
Get it now
Mobile Web
Media Gallery
Settings
Tools
Utilities
Camera

Please correct me if the above is wrong.
The difference between the above and the Telus version is that the Get it now, Mobile Web, and Gallery menus are all put into one called Do More.
Interisting to note however, is that the telus games and tools sub menus seem to be there more for organization of downloaded apps than anything else. They both have a Get it now option at the top of their own respective app lists.

Really this just means that the verison version uses the identical software underlying everything as the Telus, no obvious concrete walls yet.

Has anyone ever done the following:
- Get backup of entire phone before using the get it now feature.
- Get backup after new app is downloaded
- compare the two?

If so, are you willing to email me both sets of backups, I may be able to figure something out. email: cloud_c@hotmail.com
