SL55 Cannot Connect to PC

i have just bought a usb data cable for my sl55 but i cannot get the pc to recognise that the phone is connected.
i've installed the driver from the cd (called 'PL-2303 USB-to-Serial' if that's useful ) then plugged in the phone. the pc recognises that there is new hardware present and identifies it as a PL-2303 USB-to-Serial device. it assigns com3 to the device and it all looks fine.
when i try and open data suite or the 'mobile' program, i just get a message such as 'no phone connected' or 'please connect your mobile phone' etc. i've selected com3 in the data suite options, but it still does not think there is anything connected (even if i click the auto-search thing, it doesnt find the mobile).
there is a small switch on the data cable (on the box in the middle of the cable to be exact), which can be set to 'L' or 'R'. i've tried both settings and it doesn't seem to make a difference.
is there some setting i need to change on the phone to actually accept a connection or something? or should having the on and active just be enough?
any help would be much appreciated. cheers,
joe.
