Posted by: alpha tag

the K700 might be another contender as reviewers have mentioned its loud mp3 playback..

Posted by: deniskch

Hi there, I need the K700 and E398 market price
Thanks for reply...

Posted by: BMWFilms

the gx-32 isn't too bad for MP3s...but yeah the k700 might be better

Posted by: altec18

6230 plays pretty good mp3

Posted by: konflict

V300 i have has a decent volume on mp3 and speaker phone. If it was up to me i would have put the speaker on the front of the phone instead of the back though because it can be muffled when lying the phone flat on something. I have yet to find a speaker as loud as Nextels though. Sony erricsons speakers absolutley SUCK!

Come try the same MP3 beside my P900 (SONY ERICSSON INCASE YOU DONNO), if your V300 sound louder than mine, you can take my P900, V80s and more phones away for free.

btw, to answer the thread topic, E398 does have the "nicest" mp3 tones with it's bass, but however IMO P900 has the LOUDEST tone

Volume:
P900 > 6230 > e398 > V600 > inno90

Quality:
e398 > P900 > 6230 > V600 > inno90

Tat Nokia 7610 can directly play mp3 ringtone without converting to mmf. fles ?... I heard tat Moto E398 can play mp3 ringtone without converted to mmf. files...And the stereo speakers make BIG different with 3D sound quality than can beat up SE K700.

But not as loud as the V3 since it has two speakers and they are bigger as well.

i wonder how did you even manage to get a sound??? 6600 does not have MP3 ringtone, unless you use oggplay... but then that will require ogg files, not MP3 files, that is technically...

E680 also having the stereo speakers with 3D sound effect...

No it's not ok. The 6600 is mono and Nokia doesn't advertise it as stereo. But Moto is bsing people by claiming that their Stereo is somehow 3D sound.

well, 6600 is mono that is why there is no way nokia can advertise it as stereo anyways. And why is it ok when it comes to play 3D games on your 6600 but not ok when it comes to listen music from a phone that has stereo spekaers?

Kapsama, here is a worthy information for you since you don't know the difference between 3D sound and stereo speakers. You can read, learn and change your bulky 6600 to E398 good luck!

Surround-Sound On Your Phone

Aug 17, 2004
Many of Motorola's mass-market phones will become iPod-like devices next year, ultimately raising the possibility that cell phones of the future will replace mobile music devices.

Will musical cell phones ultimately overtake Apple's iPods? Not likely, but mobile phones could open new markets for Apple's iTunes and other enhanced-audio services.

A few cell phones today are capable of playing about 100 full-length MP3 songs stored on removable media such as SD cards. That's nothing compared to dedicated MP3 players or iPods and their 60 GB hard drives, but it probably is enough to satisfy casual music listeners.

These aren't your monophonic or polyphonic sounds, either. The emerging music cell phones come with stereo and 3D sound.

Motorola Chairman and CEO Ed Zander says the handset manufacturer will develop a new iTunes music player for its mass-market music phones sometime in the first half of 2005. That means iTunes fanatics can download music to their PCs and then use Bluetooth or USB connections to put them on the cell phones.

With broadband wireless networks arriving now with UMTS and CDMA2000 1XEV-DO, it also will be possible to play streaming audio over-the-air or even download songs. In-Stat/MDR, a sister company to Wireless Week, said in a recent report that mobile music services will become more attractive when music can be streamed to handsets.

"Streaming music on demand over mobile networks will become an increasingly viable business proposition as network capacity increases with 3G upgrades, and as continued advances in compression make audio streaming less bandwidth-consuming," In-Stat says.

$$$ With plain vanilla ringtones generating as much as $3 billion this year, the music and wireless industries are hoping for big revenue in the future with enhanced mobile music, whether stored on the handset or streamed.

In-Stat/MDR notes MP3 playback capabilities already are in handsets or accessories from Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Siemens and Samsung. MP3 will be commonplace on phones within the next few years, In-Stat says.

The current crop of mobile phones "are just a cheap gadget for music lovers," says Ovum analyst Dario Betti, "but performance improvements will make them a compelling entry-level to medium-level portable music players within two years."

Betti thinks the only fly in the musical ointment might be wireless operators' reluctance to embrace mobile music unless they can share in the music sales themselves. "Sweetening the pill for the operator community must be a priority," he says.

When Betti talks about improved handset performance for music, he's talking about cell phones with new hardware and software that turn music into a rich experience.

"There is quite a lot of development going on," says Alan Brown, a Gartner analyst who looks at semiconductors in mobile terminals. Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and Freescale Semiconductor all are working in the area of enhanced audio.

Qualcomm recently started sampling chipsets with its Enhanced Multimedia Platform, which, among other capabilities, will provide 3D sound and support for music formats like MP3 and Apple's AAC/aacPlus. This will mean CD-quality listening on mobile phones, says Mark Frankel, product management director with Qualcomm's chip division, Qualcomm CDMA Technologies.

SURROUND SOUND? Frankel says 3D audio provides acoustic effects that allow listeners to discern sounds as if they were coming from different directions. 3D audio is not like stereo, which separates frequencies in different channels, but 3D audio can create a surround-sound effect.

Qualcomm licensed technology from QSound Labs of Canada earlier this summer to integrate QSound's audio enhancement software ? Q3D and QXpander ? into Qualcomm's chipsets. QSound's technology provides the 3D audio effect using a stereo headset or even just two speakers with a mobile phone.

Mike Olivarez, multimedia manager at Freescale Semiconductor, spun off from Motorola this year, says 3D audio will be combined with 3D graphics capabilities on handsets for the mobile gaming audience. This combination means game players can hear the sound of an attacker coming from behind or beside them, before they see the 3D image.

Freescale hasn't announced anything yet, but Olivarez says those capabilities can be expected from future chips.

A leading home theater and portable audio company, SRS Labs, is working with Texas Instruments on a suite of 3D audio solutions for mobile phones. The SRS technology, which it branded WOW, is designed for use with TI's digital signal processors and OMAP platform.

"The listener will perceive the best possible headphone playback and will hear an incredible 3-dimensional sound field from handsets designed with two closely spaced, small speakers for music, video, gaming and ringtones, making the audio listening experience sound much more realistic and natural and instantly providing richer bass performance from these small speaker drivers," says Joanna Skrdlant, SRS product marketing director.

Motorola has started emphasizing music on mobile phones because it sees mobility and music as a natural combination, according to Alberto Moriando, global director of the company's entertainment group. Mobile music is a good way to find a new, young audience for its handsets as well as to broaden the entire market, he says.

Motorola has three handsets specifically for mobile music that are either shipping or coming out this year ? the E398, E680, and C650 ? and these are likely to be the phones with the iTunes player next year. The E398 is the most sophisticated with an MP3 player, removable memory and 3D stereo surround-sound speakers. It recently started selling in Europe and Asia and is being tested on North American networks.

"You're really going to have a compelling experience in the fidelity of the playback" with the E398, Moriando says.

Because the E398 has the technology for enhanced audio, Moriando says, the key to the Apple iTunes player on Motorola phones will be to make the user interface simple and easy to use.

Moriando says the Motorola iTunes application won't make the iPod obsolete because the Apple device can hold far more songs than a phone, and adding a 60 GB hard drive to increase a phone's capacity would be cost-prohibitive.

For the time being, Motorola is happy to expand iTunes to mobile phones, but Moriando says streaming and downloading music over-the-air will be a reality as soon as carriers start enabling it.

NETWORK ELEMENT Also on the services side, RealNetworks has been busy signing up handset makers for its Real-Player, as well as signing deals with network, platform and chip manufacturers. High-quality audio is one piece of

RealNetworks' mobile vision, which also includes video, according to Richard Wolpert, chief strategy officer.

RealPlayer is now on more than 20 devices, including PDAs and mobile phones. It's the standard player on Nokia's Series 60 platform and Openwave Systems' Phone Suite v7.

"The way we're looking at this world is about IP (Internet Protocol) media delivery," Wolpert says. He says IP delivery has been the world of the desktop PC, but cellular networks and cable will soon adopt it as well. The PC may remain the hub to distribute media content to stereo systems, music players, TVs and mobile phones.

Just as most people see as archaic the idea of carrying a pager and a cell phone, so it will be in the future with MP3 players and cell phones, Wolpert says. "It's just a matter of time before they merge," he says.

Mark Donovan, director of mobile services and marketing for RealNetworks, says mobile music becomes more interesting when the devices are connected to a network. That not only means using a PC to put music on a device, but using the network itself to download or stream music.

Being connected to a wireless network enables subscribers to discover new music in a spontaneous way.

"Streaming lets you [service providers] present consumers with music they haven't heard before and maybe don't know about," Donovan says. And Wolpert says music lovers also will be able to access their library of music anywhere.

What 3D games are you talking about anyway? The 6600 is not a N-Gage.

And go ahead listen to music on your E398, I'm not saying anything. But the claim of Moto that a Cell Phone with two speakers has 3D sound is rediculous.

Playing crappy N-Gage on 6600 --> illegal

Oh that's my problem, I don't think the E398 is surround sound capable...

why you think that? because i found samsung speakers loudest among others

I don't understand how peopel can refute claims when they don't even own the phone. I had an E398 and the sound on the phone is AMAZING. The combination of dual speakers, the 3d sound and the vibe sync blows any other phone out of the water as far as playing music through the built in speakers. You really notice the quality when you are in a quiet room. If you are walking down the street or something of course you aren't going to hear any kind of 3d effect, but you wouldn't know any of this because you don't have the phone (if you did have it then you didn't use it to its full potential).

Most (if not all) samsung use the earpiece as the loudspeaker for the ringtones, instead of having a dedicated speaker do the job for them. The D500 sorta fixes this with the sound mate but its not plugged into the phone the entire time. Based on reviews, I wouldn't expect it to be the loudest but then again, it could be.

D500 plays regular MP3s but is limited to 80mb of buit-in memory, no external slots and may still be too pricey for some.
