Is it possible to use the SL56 as a dial up modem. Can I buy a cable to connect the computer's phone jack to the phone? I'd imagine it's not possible by IRda, and maybe not possible at all.

Yes. I've done it with a Visor using the IR link.

A cable to PC should be no probs. You'll need the modem assistant software from Siemens - it either comes with the datasuite or firmware. However, I think (that's only a think) you don't do it via the phone jack but via the data cable/serial port. Remember to have an ISP number to dial though

ahh nevermind, after reading another thread in a different forum, it's not possible to do it using attws.
