Voice dialing with Audiovox 8600

I've done a little bit of reading through some of the threads about the 8600 and I'm surprised that this phone is having so many issues. I've had it since Sept of 2003 and although I'm not that happy with it it's alright for what I need it to do.

Based on that, this weekend I decided to try out the voice dialing feature and found that it seems to work about 50% of the time. I have it set to activate when I flip the phone up. Upon doing so it normally asks to say the name of the number to dial. I do and it works. Other times when I flip up the phone, I get an error message and it goes to the normal display. Is this a firmware issue that has been resolved yet? It's pretty annoying considering I'd like to try out the feature and doesn't seem to work properly.

Also, are there any sites on the net somewhere that give you step by step instructions on how to use some of the features like the voice dialing? The manual seems to suck for this since it doesn't tell me much other than what the settings are.

Thanks for any input/advice.

Try pressing any button on the keypad when you are experiencing the error.

They are attempting to resolve this issue with this unit

I think I figured out a way to make it work all the time. When I flip open the phone, I press the top left button and I get the "name please" voice. Sometimes I wait to see if it happens automatically and when I gauge that it's not going to happen I press the button.

It's sad that you would have to fiddle with a kludge to make a normal feature like voice dialing work. That was my biggest complaint about the 8600 - lousy voice dialing that worked some of the time, and other times it would "forget" the voice tags.

All the other issues, like the slow scrolling menus, side buttons that only work sometimes, opening and closing flip misses calls, poor security features, no gaming ability at all, etc., just added to the level of my disdain for that phone. I couldn't stand to have a phone that only partially worked as advertised. It was as if Bell happily sold me the phone and then told me to "get lost" when I complained that it didn't work properly.

Some people here may say that it's an inexpensive phone, but that's no excuse for the screwed up features. The Chevy Cavalier is a lower priced car than many others, but if the power windows don't work, do you just shrug your shoulders and accept it?

The Samsung (and Sanyo 8100) are excellent phones that essentially work as they should. It's a treat to be able to flip open the phone, say a name, and have it work 100% of the time. All the other issues with the 8600 don't exist on these models, and it's great to be able to use the phone as intended.
