GSM/TDMA question

I recently purchased my first GSM phone, a Siemens S46, and activated it on the AT&T network on a GSM America National plan.

This particular phone is compatible for use on TDMA 800/1900 and GSM 900/1900 networks.

I was under the imnpression that I would be able to switch to TDMA only coverage - or set the phone to automatic - when in areas not supported by a GSM signal. But I am unable to get a signal when I configure my phone to TDMA coverage.

Is there something additional I would need to do to support TDMA coverage when needed? Is there some sort of 'lock code' that needs de-activated? Or am I doomed to GSM only calls?

Being from the UK I'm only taking a rough guess at this. Your plan/SIM only supports GSM networks. The phone can only accept what it's allowed to by the SIM.

If you have a tri-band phone here, the SIM usually comes loaded with tri-band network operators. Dual band would only have those type on there.

I'd check with your service provider.

he's right, my mom used to have that phone and in order for the TDMA side to work you need to be on a "Gait" plan (thats what cingular calls it not sure if thats what AT&T does though) those plans are TDMA/GSM combination plans that will take full advantage of your phone's hardware. The fact that they sell it as a GSM phone too means that they sometimes sell it with GSM only plans...
