How To For CRICKET 8900

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: cid420420

Hi Everyone Quick story and then the goods :-)
i got the 8900 from cricket the first day it came out the phone was really cool at first considering my last phone of 3 years was a nokia 5170i then i realized that all the ringtones pretty much sucked and the backgrounds sucked and the real downer NO GAMES!!! so i got the $50 audiovox cable and set out on my mission

heres what i have got to work full screen .png, uploading .gif and .jpg (the phone auto sizes these so they are not full screen),
and midi ringtones(the phone cuts you off at 50) and disabling the Camera Shutter
I am currently working on animated .gif wallpaper and screensavers, mp3 ringtones and replacing the startup/shutdown music and animation
HERE WE GO!!!

FOR ALL OF THIS YOU WILL NEED:
BITPIM 0.7 Test8 and a data cable with working drivers
my ZIP http://home.woh.rr.com/anarchyinc/FILES.zip

FOR RINGTONES YOU WILL NEED:
PsmPlayer v3.80e
HEX WORKSHOP
Some Kind Of MIDI cutting software I use ANVIL STUDIO

WARNING: NEVER USE BITPIM TO DELETE FILES IT WILL SCREW YOUR PHONE UP ALWAYS DELETE IN THE PHONES MEDIA GALLERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MIDI RINGTONES:
the easy way is to send yourself a SEED tone cricket sells them on their website $1.99 a tone ouch heres a betterway
send yourself a text message if you have text messaging this can be done from your phone if not send one from www.mycricket.com
it doesn't matter what it says you just need to recieve it on your phone next open bitpim open the filesystem tab and expand it to
/nvm/sms there will be a bunch of files named sms_0001 and so fourth right click on each of these and select hexdump find the message you want to replace when you find it right click and select overwrite open the sms_0001 file included in the zip file attached close bitpim unplug the phone from the cable and restart it go to your text messages look for the title Crawlingi open it Linkin park crawling will be played this is your SEED tone DON'T DELETE THIS MESSAGE go to the Menu and select option 6 Save to Saved this moves it to the Saved folder go to the Saved folder and open the message again open the Menu and select option 4 Save Media Rename the song to what you intend to upload to phone now the software is a little wierd about renameing ringtones after about ten let just say its best to think ahead now :-) ok this gives us a place in the /user/sound/ringer directory to overwrite next we need a new ringtone to put on the phone realize when selecting the size of your ring tone that it will only play 15-20 seconds of it use anvil studio or whatever you use and cut down your midi to about 20 seconds next open the new 20 second midi in PsmPlayer v3.80e click the stop sign looking record button in the next window MAKE SURE ringtone mode is selected click ok create a new file again this is your ringtone open this new file in HEX WORKSHOP an add the file header to the file cut and paste it from my example file in the zip there is a formated ringtone and the same tone with the header added in the ZIP its not as hard as it sounds simple copy and paste in hex workshop after you add the header go to the /user/sound/ringer directory in BITPIM and find the SEED tone that you have prenamed for this tone and right click and overwrite it with your new tone with the header it will let you do 50 tones this way no prob

REMEMBER: NEVER USE BITPIM TO DELETE FILES IT WILL SCREW YOUR PHONE UP ALWAYS DELETE IN THE PHONES MEDIA GALLERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IMAGES:
this is easier than ringtones
first the fullscreen image size is 128W * 145H and only if it's a .PNG the phone will resize .JPG and .GIF with boarders there is a sample .PNG in the ZIP open BITPIM expand to /brew/shared/images on the images directory name right click and select new file... select the .PNG .GIF or .JPG next close BITPIM and go to the brew menu on the phone go to Settings Manage Apps and then System Info exit out now go to Media Gallery-Images-Graphics your Image has appeared cool huh
your can go to Settings-Display-Graphics and set your new image as a screen saver or wall paper Remember only .PNG's will be fullscreen

REMEMBER: NEVER USE BITPIM TO DELETE FILES IT WILL SCREW YOUR PHONE UP ALWAYS DELETE IN THE PHONES MEDIA GALLERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DISABLING THE CAMERA SHUTTER SOUND:
open BITPIM and expand to /camera right click on CameraState.dat and overwrite with the one in my ZIP if you select a sound for the camera shutter on the phone to disable it you will have to overwrite it again NEVER DELETE THIS FILE
HAVE FUN EVERY ONE

All of that has already been done 10x over on this site and 2 other AV sites.

As far as ringtones, there is much easier ways of just putting real mp3s on the phone.

You forgot to mention removing the Verizon blinking banner.

Figure out how to remove the time and date on the inside LCD; that is really the only obstacle left.

Posted by: SnoopyII

thanks a million for the info. He was posting for CRICKET 8900's not Verizon, etc. they are different...way different.

Again thanks for all of the good info and hard work.

Posted by: SnoopyII

It works! I just uploaded a pic (.PNG) and it works great. thanks again.

Posted by: SnoopyII

Which part of the open hex file is the header? also does this work with MP3 files? or just .mid files?

thanks

Posted by: cid420420

thanks for the defense SnoopyII i've been away from my pc for about a day the cricket 8900 is most definitly diffrent from the verizon/telus/metropcs versions its kind of a mix of diffrent aspects of all of them the header so far works only for midi (sp-midi to be specific) it`s really touch and go with mp3s because we don't have anyway to get the necessary header information but that is definitly on the agenda my next goal is to get animated gifs to work for backgrounds and screen savers then mp3's i have asked the verizon/telus users to lend me a hand by sending some files in another post but no replies i need a way to examine similarities and diffrences between crickets and their file system structure, file headers and database files i figure this is the only way to accomplish this because we all know cricket offers no kind of data services to recieve these kinds of files they send ringtones in EMS messages any help from the telus/verizon crowd would be most appreciated to see what part of the file is the header compare the two files in the TONE HEADER EXAMPLES directory in the hex workshop the diffrent part between the two is the header it's at the begining

well i got mp3 tones working i'll post how to later on tonight when i perfect it

Posted by: SnoopyII

well when you can totally safely get animations or MP3's to work (hopefully it will be an easy procedure) I will Paypal you a donation for your hard work.

REALLY I will!

P.S. I figured out which part was the header by examining your files compared to ringtone I had. It worked perfectly. Kind of a long process but that is Cricket with their proprietary & crippled code.

Come on Verizon, Telus, MetroPCS & U.S. Cellular owners! Help the man out. Send him your root.zip files.

Posted by: glockjs

would a seeded file that was sent to a verizon phone(vzpix method) work?

Posted by: KI MaRiNe

Can someone help me out! i successfully got the crawling ringtone on my phone but after that im lost i tryed making another one i used all the programs but i dont think i did the header part right. can someone help plz

Posted by: SnoopyII

The blue highlighted part is what you copy from the file "formattedwithheader.mid" file that is in the zipped program Cid uploaded.

You have to open it in a hex editor (I use UltraEdit Pro) then you simply go the beginning of the midi you are going to upload and paste it in and save.

thats what pulls up in hex workshop.

maybe it would be easier just to post the header needed, that would be an easier copy n paste

Posted by: glockjs

no updates on the mp3 ring tones yet??

Posted by: cid420420

here we go i got mp3's working and found out you can upload regular midi's without the header with the same technique so i lost a little sleep and made a easy little program located here http://home.woh.rr.com/anarchyinc/ringtonetool.zip
pretty straight forward select the ringtone you want to upload if its an mp3 make sure you change the file extension to .mid instead of .mp3 and make sure the file name including the "." in ".mid" is 15 or less characters it won't work other wise then with bitpim save the /db/download_snd.txt file to your pc select it with ringtone tool and click the Write New download_snd.txt button overwrite the file on your phone with the new one and upload your ringtone to the /user/sound/ringer directory by right clicking the directory and selecting new file now turn off and then on your phone wow your new ringtone mp3 even
its been a long night!!!!! any problems with the program drop me a line in this thread i'll try my best to help you out this program should work for metro pcs and maybe verizon if it does some one tell me i'm just intrested but it definitly works for cricket i upload 7 mp3 ringtones with it to test it it works fine

Posted by: cid420420

by the way if it helps my mp3's are 64ks mono 44100 and about 19 to 21 seconds long

Posted by: cid420420

by the way again have the file named what you want before you upload it the phone is still not to happy when you try to rename the file in the media gallery

Posted by: SnoopyII

CID you rock! I will test it out. PM me your email addy that you use for paypal.

Posted by: glockjs

right on bro....works perfectly...

now i gotta fix my inbox messages auto locking

a few thoughts though, what do you think would happen if you blanked out the on and off.txt under db? if the phone didnt know it was there would it skip past the stupid on and off ani or would the phone lock up? has anybody tried yet?

ive noticed with tones at least even if some sort of tone is on there but the phone didnt log it theres no prob, you can even delete it in bitpim. i see the problem with the phone locking up if its the phone thinks its there but its not. thats where people are getting a freeze up. bitpim doesnt make logs on the phones when it deletes. oh yeah BTW, i think if you accidently lock up your phone by deleteing a pic or tone you can fix it by placing a blank txt in the db and deleting all your entrys under the photos and or ringtones....yes no maybe so?

and if you could rewrite the shutter sound.txt to realize there's a no sound slot you could permantely fix that prob. maybe a good verizon citizen with updated firmware could help us with that one.

as far as the mp3 tones go, my best setting is 56kbps 22050hz 8 bit mono. sounds good still without taking up too much space. has anybody had any distortion with the phone speaker cause the mp3 is too loud? i havnt even tried, i usually drop the db's a few levels if it even looks too loud.

anyways, thats just a few thoughts. thanks again. thats awesome cid. did you write that prog yourself???

Posted by: nerve

Deifnitely works for U.S. Cellular also. If you drop an address or something I will shoot you a few bucks through Paypal. Thanks alot.

Very happy with the phone now.

Posted by: glockjs

i dont think the carrier is gonna matter. the basic programing functions should be the same throughout.

oh yeah, fixed the auto locking thing. i was tryin to see if ringtonejukebox.com would work with the phone even though the phone is not on the list. well lets say dont ever test your phone saying its a nokia. i think they tried to send a old school ring to the phone and some how that f'd it up. i had to resend the test a few times before it stopped unlocking it

oh yeah, snoopy where are you getting your animations? what size are they? do the x by z sizes matter? they are gif files right? and just put em on like the pics right?

thanx

Posted by: SnoopyII

Sorry for the confusion. I got .PNG wallpapers & ringtones (.mid so for I haven't had time to do the MP3 ones yet)

I bet animations will be something like ringtones. you will have to seed one and since CricKet doesn't have brew active someone with Verizon or one of the other carriers might have to help by uploading a .gif file and then sending a hex dump for examination.

Posted by: nerve

i got a file that i want to use for a text msg alert, but i cant figure out how. Is it possible to i can use it as a ringtone but not a text message alert.

Posted by: glockjs

well so far got 8 mp3's, 10 jpg, and 3 png on the phone and everything is working fine

Posted by: jfravel

what is your software version. mine is T095UC2T25_0.196 with a hardware of TX-95C_REV_02. i have tried all these and i'm getting the files to show up under downloads, but whenever i overwrite them w/ my midi files i get nothing. the icon will show an envelope w/ a box through it and it will play some boring ringing sound w/ different boring rings for the different ones i have tried to upload. i know the songs work because i use them on my verizon phone. i am trying to help out a friend w/ us cellular. nerve is your phone version the same as mine? i am able to upload original midi files just not mp3 renamed to .mid. it's ×××× weird.

Posted by: glockjs

whats up jfravel... i see you wrote the word "overwrite" in your post. overwrite is no good if your using vox 8900 ringtone program that cid has blessed us with. "new file" is a much friendlier word when it comes to this. try n go back and do it step by step as its written. good luck.

Posted by: SnoopyII

I just uploaded my first MP3 ringtone. CID is a genius! now we need to pry his email addy out of him so we can send him some paypal donations for his GOOD, high quality work.

Posted by: glockjs

grrrr...well i tried to post some wallpapers..stupid geocities.

Posted by: glockjs

try it this way...here you go cid alot smaller dbz wallpaper. if anybody has free web space to use i can email the wallpaper and you can post em for me. let me know

Posted by: cid420420

Thanks for the appretiation guys I'm glad I could help I would still like to know what carriers this works on i believe it should work on any 8900 that runs brew not the telus j2me version if anyone gets it to work post your carrier so i can check this out so far it works on Cricket and U.S. Cellular as far as changeing the startup animation by blanking the db file it doesn't work I've tried it it's located in the firmware we can't access yet yes i wrote the program my self if it works with carriers like verizon that can recive animations then the data base files and directorys should be some what similar bonus everyone can have animations as well if you can recieve animations send your directory structure and a backup of your /db/ directory to cid@woh.rr.com the help would be much appreciated i've had someluck seeding the animation data base but no matter where i put the animated gif media gallery can not display it nor will the background or screen saver here also are some sample midi files for the phone the names need to be changed in some cases: http://home.woh.rr.com/anarchyinc/midi%20RingTones.zip
and here are some sample mp3 ring tones the names are all 15 or less characters with the .mid extension allready they are 64 kbs mono 44 kHz:
http://home.woh.rr.com/anarchyinc/mp3%20Ringtones.zip
i think the phone lowers the bass and volume to an approperiate level on mp3's thats at least been my experience so far it does kind of make it sound weird when it removes a large chunk of the bass

Posted by: cid420420

thanks alot for the wall paper glockjs dbz rules i can host a few for you e-mail them to me write a index.html page for them if you want to

Posted by: glockjs

they're sent. thanks cid

Posted by: SnoopyII

I have my own space ( 2 sites actually) I will host any and all programs/files needed. Also I have unlimited bandwidth so no problem there either. Everyone can download them all they want. Just PM me. I will post later with some stuff I have already.

MODS!!! Please sticky this thread. thanks

Posted by: centran

I just started up here because I wanted to put mp3 ringtones on my new 8900. I read about it at cellphonehacks, but they are where no help in how to do it.
I am on US Cellular. I bought the 8900 as a returned item and luckily it had easyedge downloaded midis on it already. If it was not for these ringtones I do not think I could have put my own ringtones on.
First thing I did was back up my phone. I then deleted all the ringtones from the phone and added my own. I used the program to write the snd file. It didn't mess up the phone but the ringtones did not play!
After I restored the phone I was able to put ringtones on and play them fine as long as one downloaded ringtone stayed on the phone.
I think it might be how the download_snd.txt is intialy formated.
I will play more with it tonight.
As for the pictures. I have a dir in the root called. /down/photo . there are other dir in down called ani animidi cache callerid shutter.
I think this might be the folder where images get downloaded to. As I do not have easyedge I can not confirm this. I will be signing up for easyedge in the next couple days to see where it downloads the files too. I am pretty sure that there is a file like download_snd.txt that also has to be formated correctly.
I put a png in the photo dir and when I tried to view it my phone freaked out. When I put a jpg in there the phone just ignored it and acted normally.
I am not going to try this now but what do you think will happen if I put a png in the camera dir? I am betting it might real screw something up so I do not want to try it yet.

On a last note, I think with bitpim and the new download_snd.txt writer program we can make a simple program to manage ringtones/images on the 8900. wallpapers and graphics might be difficult becuase from what I am seeing every carrier might be slightly different. But please do not talk about starting a programing project as I will create a new topic about that.

Posted by: glockjs

do you have brew on your phone? then its as simple as the very first post to get pics and wallpaper on your phone.

putting stuff on you phone really isnt the prob as far as freezing, its deleting stuff without changing the log the phone thinks its still there. i still wouldnt mess with that photo folder though.

read through the post again, follow the directions exactly

Posted by: jfravel

sorry for the mistype. i did follow the directions word for word, and i get the file on the phone w/ an x through an envelope as the icon. unfortunately nothing plays and when pressing pause/play i get a single beep. i am using the .mid files that were zipped to see if my files for my verizon phone are too different. nothing works, i'm assuming it's either the software, or the format of the download_sound.txt file. any help w/ this would be great. there is no easyedge service in this area. so i have no idea.

jfravel,

Try to add my download_snd.txt and all the mids to your phone off the zip file I added. Those should be the only ones when you start.
These files where left on my phone when I got it. Just make sure you leave one file always on the phone. I think you are having the problem I had. CIDs program has a problem when formating from blank I believe.
--------------------------------------------------
As for the problem I had with pictures... all I did was create the /brew/shared/images folder and it worked.
I also discovered that when I go to manage apps and then system info in easyedge(uscc) it tells me I have 1.16MB of storage and it has a nice little bar that tells me how much more memory I have left. However, I do not think this is how much you can have as I put more on the phone.
If other services have something that displays this info it might be good for the arguments that come about for how many ringtones people can store on the phone(its 50... no only 10! I can only put 7, blah blah).

Posted by: jfravel

for those of you w/ us cellular and no easy edge, here's the only way i got it to work. i assume cid's version will work later, but here's what i got to work.

use centran's zip file and bitpim only, you will not need cid's program, for now anyway. replace your download_sound.txt file w/ centran's download_sound file. then under user/sound/ringer right click and add new. add only one of the files from centran's zip folder. then close bitpim and restart your phone. open your media gallery, and delete all the songs EXCEPT the one that you added new. it should be the only one that plays. this is the song you will overwrite. so open bitpim open user/sound/ringer and right click and overwrite the file w/ a .mp3 renamed to a .mid. this file must be the same name as the original file. i tried adding more than one of centran's files but no luck when i would try to restart the phone and use bitpim. the ringer directory would not open and would crash my computer. i have not tried to rename the new .mid file on my phone either. i am hoping cid's new version will correct this, but for right now this is the only option.

Posted by: cid420420

ok guys here we go heres the link to 8900 ringtonetool v1.1
http://home.woh.rr.com/anarchyinc/ringtonetoolv1_1.zip
this should fix all problems with the previous version it also fixes the renameing in media gallery problem have fun!!!!!! the next version will alphabeticaly sort the tone list and if i get the necessary info animations to any bugs found leave a message in the forum i really need a dump of a 8900 with downloaded animations on it verizon whoever it would allow the rest of us to have animations it just needs to be a phone with brew if anyone would be generous enough to help you would have all our gratitudes send the dump to cid@woh.rr.com thanks in advance

thanks CID. They really should sticky this thread.

i'll help you but i need more info like what operating system you are running are you running the new version of my program? what exactly is the error and what does it say ?

Posted by: thesphinx99

I have a cricket audiovox 8900. I downloaded the newest bitpim which is 0.7.13. This is the newer version than cid has. I would download his but his link no longer works. So I got mine straight from their home site. All over their site and in the instructions it says DO NOT USE BITPIM WITH THE 8900. Everywhere says that, so how are you guys getting this to work? and where is the brew thing on bitpim, the newest one doesnt even have that. can someone help? thank you

-sphinx

Posted by: glockjs

cause if you do something stupid you will mess up your phone. but if you follow directions that have been posted everything is gonna be alright

i would get build 8, the last version that has the 8900 actually listed.

snoop dizzle i sent you some wallpapers and tones to post.

i was off on the ring tones 64kps 44100hz 16bit does sound the best. 56kps sounds good too, some songs sound the exact same some dont. its only a 20kb difference.

Posted by: thesphinx99

oh ok thank you much. where can i get build 8? cid's link to does not work and thier home site does not have build 8 anymore on it? thank you

-sphinx

Posted by: SnoopyII

Glock I did not get the emaiol with the wallpaper. resend (I will PM my addy to you)

dang just go to google and type in bitpim download and it will show up. all the versions are there:

http://bitpim.sourceforge.net/

versions 7.13, 7.12, 7.11, 7.10, and even 6.2 is there.

Posted by: thesphinx99

again thanks for the reply but when you go that site only two downloads exist bitpim 0.62 and bitpim 0.7.13. the following

23rd June

BitPim 0.7.13 development release is available.

9th June

BitPim 0.7.12 development release is available.

25th May

BitPim 0.7-test11 is available.

11th May

BitPim 0.7-test10 is available.

all leads to the bitpim 0.7.13 download.......either im really stupid or those really are the only two downloads....build 8 is nowhere on there.

Posted by: SnoopyII

you have to click on downloads and then "All downloads are at the SourceForge download site or you can select below. "

which takes you here:

I bet you see it now.

i would like to find out which carriers my program works for so far i have cricket and us cellullar could someone with metro pcs and verizon try it and get back to me it would be much appreciated
again thanks to snoopyII for the donation everyone using the old version of my program 1.0 should switch to 1.1 due to the fact the new program makes a more complete header in version 1.2 i am going to add in the ability to sort the ringtone database file by name something the phones software seriously lacks and i would love to ××× in animations but i need a dump of a phone with animations allready on it

I am using bitpim 7.11 everything works fine until i try to put the ringtone in the ringer file. this is the error i get when i do it

i'm sorry i use bitpim 0.7 test 8 maybe the new version dosen't like the 8900

I don't think it is the program's fault (or CID's for that matter) otherwise there would be more people with messed up phones.

get bitpim test 8, get tx 95c driver and see if you can get into your phone to repair the files that were changed.

your not by chance using a cheap cable are you?

we should start a counter for how many people hosed their phones. I would like to see the total for everyone who has broken their phone trying to mod it. When I mean everyone I mean all the other manufacturers forums as well.

Posted by: jdubvdub

I can get the new mid file to show up on m phone and even select it, but i just get the flipping hour glass as it tries to load... What am i doing wrong? i have tried the original method (first post) and ringtone tool 1.1 with equal results.

jdubvdub

Posted by: glockjs

is it an mp3 file or an actual midi file?

Posted by: jdubvdub

tried one of each
btw...the image instructions work great
8410 on alltel

jdubvdub

Posted by: jdubvdub

The only difference i can find in the instructions vs. my phone is that my [download_snd.txt] is actually [download-snd.txt]. Notice the dash instead of underscore. AND when i am selecting this file after saving it to my pc, it doesnt actually show up in the "open" dialog box. I just type in the name and then click ok. it gets me to the next step, but not successfully.
Also, when i send them to my phone and then try to select them, i can see (just before the flipping hourglass appears) that the names have been truncated from "jeffersons.mid" and flintstones.mid to ersons and stones respectively.

thanks for looking into this

cid,
all the files i've found to work on my 8410 have been written for 8900 and all except this one have worked. Not that this one should or will, just trying to shed more light and hopefully get a workaround for ringtones. Thanks for all your hard work!!

Free commercial for CID!!! If you like his coding work and appreciate his efforts consider sending him a small paypal donation. I did! My phone would seem pretty boring the way it came out of the box compared to how it is now besides I would rather give some cash to him than pay CricKet $1.99 per ringtone...and their ringtones aren't even MP3.

Thanks again CID.

Posted by: Greyfell

I tried the steps to add an image (wallpaper) to my 8900, but it doesn't seem to have worked. BitPim still shows the file as being in my brew/shared/images directory, but I can't find any way to access it via the phone. Since there are so many warnings not to try and delete anything with BitPim since it can ruin the phone, anyone know how I can get rid of this orphan file to free up the memory? Thanks!

Posted by: glockjs

first make sure you got the right file type. it can only be jpg, gif, or png.

second make sure you did the brew, settings, manage apps step for it to show up under media gallery, images, graphics..

and if it still isnt there. check under filesystem/db/ and if "download_img.txt" still says 0 goahead and delete the file from bitpim. if it says 92 bytes dont delete it from bitpim try n find it on your phone.

oh yea why is it when i do more then 20 to 23 seconds the phone will not play the sound files ?

Well im on cellular souths service so which brand do you think would be better to get

Posted by: MarcFive

Im probably going to just buy the same you have Cid i think it should work with cellular south.

Posted by: 2tone

I'm on cell south. I bought the MOK phone book from Verizion with a cable CAUDM05-03s $25.
I worked good for about 2 weeks. Now I am having problems getting connnected. I get a USB malfunciton error. Phone works ok. I ordered the Radio Shack cable to see if it is the Phone or Cable.

Posted by: MarcFive

let me know if the cable from radio shack works. I was thinking of getting one

Posted by: brak

Cid I just wanted to say thanks your program works GREAT. I got it to download ringtones and I can preview the ringtones. The probably i'm having is that when i receive a call it goes to the default ringtone on my uscell 8900, even though i switch the ringtone to one of the downloaded ones. Am i doing something wrong. I have the ringtones in my download items, and can listen too them. Is there a certain size the ringtone has to be. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for an AWESOME program.

Brak

Posted by: SnoopyII

not to overlook the obvious do you "select" the new ringtone you want by clicking the "OK" button?

Posted by: cid420420

ok guys here we go as i said in my last post this will not be as easy as ringtones on that note here we go after a bunch of trial and error this is what i have come up with there is no way to directly put animations on your phone we have to seed an animation just like verizon and replace it with our own animation due to the fact animations are recorded in the nvm_hei file which is brew locked and inaccessable to change so first you will need this file: http://home.woh.rr.com/anarchyinc/animation_files.zip
ok first overwrite an existing sms as before in the /nvm/sms directory with the one in the sms directory in the zip file then open the /MMS directory overwrite the file "Master" with the one in the zip then overwrite "1" and "1.bak" with the files from the zip now right click on the directory and click New File and add the "13" file from the .zip now you have just added your seed animation
restart your phone
go to your messageing screen on your phone you will notice a message in you inbox name pacman open it as before goto the menu and save media it will save the pacman.gif file to the /MMS/OM directory now with bitpim overwrite the file you saved in the /MMS/OM directory with your animated .gif

a couple of side notes the phone will only play the first 3 frames of animation so it's kind of pointless and a waste of memory for anymore have fun guys
hopefully someone will find a way to edit the brew locked files and i can make a simple app to do all of this stuff in one sweep
and again thnks for the info we needed lickwid you've been a huge help

Posted by: SnoopyII

CID! Way to go. If I run into trouble I may send you the matrix gif to edit for me if you have time. thanks! and thanks to you too lickwid for providing the file.

Posted by: SnoopyII

Got it! Here is my animation. 3 frames edited to fit correctly using Ulead GIF animator. I used every other frame 1, 3, 5 since it says it was interlaced. I extracted the frames using irfan viewer. the only goofy part is I should made the animation go faster. it does like 3 frames per second. maybe 5 FPS would have been better. I guess I can redo it if necessary.

Here is the original 8 frame animation (not the right size)

another shout out to CID for the great coding work.

Posted by: brak

Snoop yes, I hit the okay button. Under my contacts list the ringtone that i choose is listed, but when that contact calls me it still goes to a default ringtone. I even chose the new ringtone in my settings. Not sure whats going on. I'll have to try the animations too, Way to go CID.

Posted by: SnoopyII

yeah that is weird brak. It seems most owners have experienced some MINOR form of weirdness with their 8900's regardless of "branding"

Posted by: 2tone

Cid

I appreciate your hard work.

I am experiencing a problem.

When I to Menu >>Messaging>>4Inbox>>OK
I get an info message---No Message In Inbox!

I did reboot the phone.

Any Suggestions

Posted by: 2tone

On bitpim I noticed that I do not have an OS Subdirectory in the MMS directory. Do I use the Make subdirectory in bitpim.

Posted by: cid420420

ok 2tone did you use bitpim to overwrite a preexisting sms message in the /nvm/sms directory?
after you seed your phone it will create the /MMS/OM directory

Posted by: glockjs

works great, thanks cid. actually easier than tones once you get that file seeded. i'll get to work later and make some animations, but right now i love my bouncin booby honda chick

the only sucky part is the on and off still makes noise

Posted by: cid420420

i definitly agree but at least we can change our startup/shutdown
animation i think verizon users can't

Posted by: MarcFive

CID you rock dude. Thanx (C) - ][ - ][)) and

][_- ][ - (C) - ][< - ][ - \\///\\// - ][ - ][))

Posted by: MarcFive

I added the superman ringtone too so can i overwrite the ringtone in the om directory with my own ringtone.

Posted by: 2tone

In bitpim the nve/sms directory was as follows

-nvm
-sms
sms_0000 275
sms_0001 28

I overwrote sms_0000 with sms_0019 and the directory looked like

-nvm
-sms
sms_0000 252 06/03/04 14:53:29
sms_0001 28

the MMS directory looked like

-mms
1 8
1.bat 1551
Master 24

overwrote and created new file

-mms
1 1551 06/03/04 14:53:11
1.bat 3080 06/03/04 14:53:16
13 14487 06/03/04 14:53:36
Master 24 06/03/04 14:53:03

rebooted and went to
Menu>>3 Messaging>>Inbox

No messages.

Posted by: cid420420

2 tone i hope you backed up sms000 it is not a message file it is the directory file for the messages try overwriting your sms001 file instead

Posted by: 2tone

Yes I backed it up.

I restored sms_0000.

went through the procedure again overwriting sms_0001 with sms_0019.

still no messages in the inbox.

When you reboot phone do you need to unplug PC Cable?

Posted by: MarcFive

I added the superman ringtone too so can i overwrite the ringtone in the om directory with my own ringtone.

Posted by: vox8900

2tone,
You have to have a text message already in your inbox to overwrite it with CID's file

Posted by: 2tone

Is it possible to put a seed message with out subscribing to text messaging?

Posted by: MarcFive

does anyone know how to edit this pic so it will spin right on the screensaver

Posted by: glockjs

in trying to make the animated gif fill the screen i just remembered that this phone resizes gif's. so no matter what size i tried i can still see white around the edges. so to keep the file size down for these animated gif's i suggest 128x128. and to try and make the background of the gif white so it looks better if you can.

the only thing i can figure is your gonna have to find a seeded pmd file cid in order to get a full screen animation.

Posted by: MarcFive

I saved the ringtone that came with the pacman pic and it shows up the the om directory can i overwrite it with my own ringtone.

Posted by: glockjs

ringtone? if you mean gif yes you can. for ringtones use cid tool.

save and rename to what you want it to be(rename under media gallery) that way you can put as many gifs as you want

Posted by: MarcFive

that eminem song came with the gif and i saved it too so can i overwrite it too

Posted by: cid420420

realize if you overwrite the superman ringtone that came with the seed animation it can only be with another .mid mp3's will not work with that method

Posted by: MarcFive

ok thanx

Posted by: MarcFive

will it mess up the phone or will it just not work

Posted by: cid420420

not work

Posted by: MarcFive

would you recommend not trying at all

Posted by: cid420420

it's kinda pointless because my tool writes headers in the download_snd.txt file that work with mp3 and mid

Posted by: MarcFive

I know but mine still isnt working yet im going to get a new cable and try it then

Posted by: 2tone

reask cid Is it possible to get a seed message in the inbox to overwrite without signing up for the premium service?

Posted by: 2tone

Marc The Radio Shack cable came in. They substituted a future dial 19 cable pn 170-0792 for the 17-792. The cable has a box in the middle. I am debating whether to return it.

by spin right if you mean turn clockwise instead of counterclockwise then simply extract all the frames. reverse them (irfan viewer will do both of these tasks then recompile 3 frames using ulead GIF animator.

Posted by: glockjs

haha, no thats spinnin the right way. he means by usin three frames it looks funky. i couldnt get it to look right in 3. 4 i was able. but the original just doesnt have 3 even frames

the only thing I know about them is that they are called "Sprewell's" after the basketball player. Never got close enough to them to see which way they were actually turning. try skipping every other frame (like frame 1, 3, 5 or 2, 4, 6.)

Posted by: MarcFive

aight thanks peeps helping i will just have to find another picture to do it with

Posted by: glockjs

its cool haha. those are fake bolt on ones anyways. davin is the first maker. sprewell helped design the first ones with davin.

Posted by: MarcFive

spinners are spinner no matter how you look at it but Yeah youre right davins are first makers, and you have to be a balla to get Davins. 10 g's if you please. For the Davins. Davins cost more than my cars value now

Then you go down to autozone and buy you some nice plastic duct taped on craptastic spiners.
This is what I think of most of the "mods" autozone has. The yellow guy is rice section at autozone.

Posted by: glockjs

sorry snoop dizzle i gotta back centran on this one. although the spinning hub caps you can pick up at your local wal mart are tight as hell and dont get me started on spintechs, especially when you put 18" spinners on a 20" rim

i will say though some rims that are bolt on but not really can look good. cause they are designed perfectly for that rim.

my favorite are the floaters though.

not to get too far off topic in a cell phone forum about cricket

Posted by: SnoopyII

you mean marcfive.

I am the one that can't even figure out which direction they are supposed to spin.

I will get off topic for one more comment. My friend thinks that anything but sprewells are junk. I think some of the bolt ons look decent enough. If I had a nice ride I would get the bolt ons because I can't afford to roll with the big boys.
But I would do something to the spinners to out-weigh the fact they are bolt ons. I would weld a piece of iron to the spinning part. Then my wheels would spin but my rims would only move back and forth a little bit, but should not spin around. Non-spinners....

I have used audacity to make ringtones. It is free. If you want I can post the steps to make a mp3 ringtone in audacity. I saved the steps to a text that I got from this site. I can not find the orginal thread doing a search, so I will post the steps if you want them.
Audicity has some weird quirks, but it is real easy once you get used to the program.

Posted by: MarcFive

how can i stop the long pause before the mp3 ringer starts

Posted by: SnoopyII

Marc:

the delay is probably due to the phone needing to "load up" the MP3 data in it's microscopic little memory area.

Posted by: MarcFive

ah i see. No way to stop that

Posted by: 2tone

SnoopyII, glockjs

How do you keep from loosing picture quality when creating your own animations in ulead? GIF looks good on PC bad on 8900.

Posted by: SnoopyII

I have been using mostly default settings.

Posted by: thesphinx99

ok so far i have gotten everything to work...midi, mp3 wallpaper animations. but now i am curious if there is a way to change the background color on the clock thats on the main screen. that orange background really sux on some wallpapers. i made a bunch of wallpaper and ringtone's final fantasy style, if any of you would like to have em just get them from my website at www.kaoticisland.com

I created a thread titled "Can people post links to files such as ringtones and wallpapers? " Your kaotic island website would be great to post in there however your website is not working, are you sure you spelled it correctly?

Posted by: thesphinx99

oh yeah sorry about that. website is up and working now. the broadband company i use decided to change their rules. before they allowed multiple ip's on the same network but now they dont so i had to go out and get a router. so as of now until i get it all setup its http://24.8.208.60 and when i get it fixed with my router and stuff it will be back to www.kaoticisland.com sorry about that. but yeah check it out.

restart your phone
go to your messageing screen on your phone you will notice a message in you inbox name pacman

I followed these. My only difference was that I didn't have a 1.bak file on the phone already, so I had to "new file" both 1.bak and 13.

There is nothing in my inbox. What did I do wrong?

Posted by: 2tone

On the first step did you already have an existing message in your inbox to overwrite?

Posted by: vox8900

Tep, you needed to have a text message already in there for the files to overwrite. Just go to WWW.VTEXT.COM and send yourself a text message and then overwrite the files again. Thats all you should need to do to get the pacman message

Posted by: gtprojectx

ah, no i didn't have a message in there already.
I'll just do the #646 to get a free text message....

or is the vtext.com free as well to receive? (don't have any messaging on my plan)

Posted by: vox8900

vtext will cost you .02 cents then

Posted by: jmensah

Thanks man. Everything works great!!!!!

~sphinx

Posted by: centran

http://24.8.208.60/phpbbindex.php?&...e521cdeb7dbeb19

I got Voice ringtones to work on my phone, but am having a hard time hearing them. It seems that the volume on these type of rintones is really low. Has anyone else run into this? is there any way to turn up the volume on these type of ringones (.qcp)????

Posted by: hani13

hey
im also a telus user with the 8900 and i also have a data cable
ordered it from ebay
how do i download ringtones on it ??
any help would be appreciated

Posted by: PackCat

Unfortunately, BitPim, will not let me do anything but backup the phone, BUT Brewsky 8900 does the trick for most the of the common operations such as uploading ringtones (MP3 & MID), uploading Graphics (PNG & JPG), and downloading CAM pics to your computer.

I'm hoping Chip Warner, will notice how well-received his program is, and begin to tackle some of the other functions, like animations, file maintainence, camstat files, and maybe even setting WAP capabilites.

For anyone that hasn't used it yet, the download is:

Brewsky 8900 v1.01 beta

are you following the directions exactly?
i have gotten that message before but it was when i didn't overwrite all the files that are listed in the instructions about the games so far what i gather is this the applications are double encrypted once by the server that sends them to your phone and by the phone it's based on your specific esn also the files that keep tract of the animated gifs brew apps and games and other stuff like phone book stuff are currently inaccessable from my testing they are all the files in the /nvm/nvm directory the thing is the files can't be overwritten previously i had though they were locked but with the qpst i have figured out that even in service mode they are opened and in memory thats why they can't be overwritten the service programing app can change settings like the spc that reside in the nvm files so there must be a way to alter them the only real thing in the near future i hope to acomplish is to be able to backup and restore the nvm files that way at least you can backup and restore the apps you have paid for cricket has started offering brew apps in my area

Posted by: cricketsubcontr

I followed them completely before but then agian it took me awhile to get the 'puter and cable and the programs to work (had Radio Shack order the cable and found out I could use the one from audiovox!! Oh well I'll just refund it when I go back ) Yea we got a msg at work that brew is now avail in Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Dayton, Toledo, Syracuse. Unfortunatly still not in my area. Download the brew devolpment software from Quallcom (audiovox) so I'm gonna start playing around with it! I'm thinking that you can have a file that is more then 3 frames if it's compressed and stored under *.bci (Brew compressed image file) the phone wants to display it but got a few things to figure out on it! Other then the fact that the only programming I learn is to hack things with (when I move to Az I'm starting my computer science class). As for backing up the files that shouldn't be to hard!!! Actually all the files that you can access on the phone are able to removed with no harm!!! I actually had to erase all files in the phone. Once I power cycled it the firmware actually replaced all files that were deleted!! If anyone reads this and tries it don't blame me if it screws up your phone!!! As it worked for me and that's all I'm saying!!!! What I make out right now is that everything that is on the phone has to be pointed out thru the /db file. As soon as I can get my hands on a *.mif file (games and what not are store under this extension) Then I'll be able to learn more but if you do get an app put on please please please post anything you learn thru the dumping of info. sucks that only a little over 2megs is avail on the phone! I did convert on gif to the *.bci format which was a 7 frame animation I couldn't belive the amount of compression!!!!!! The actuall *.gif file size in comparison looked like one of the mp3 files and the *.bci file was no bigger then a standard *.ico (icon file). With cricket coming out of bankruptcy I don't think it's gonna be much longer before they support WAP. They're gonna have to in order to stay competitive!!!!! Ok so I wrote enuf for now!!! but for now I'm gonna try my best to work on longer animations and the games but without seeing what is actually done in the phone it's self it's gonna be hard

Posted by: cricketsubcontr

Ok I feel like an idiot got the animation up and running

Which version on bitpim are you using... I tried ver. x.7 or whatever the last valid release for 8900, but cannot do more than create backups of the phone directories. Brewsky8900 is about the only reliable program I am using.

Can you post a link to qpst and quallcom sdk?

thanks,
john

Posted by: cricketsubcontr

For programming in with brew you need the brew sdk which is available at http://brew.qualcomm.com/brew/en/
I'm using bitpim version 0.62

QUESTION....HOW DID YOU GET THE BCI FILE ON THE PHONE, WITH OUT A SEED FILE? WHEN EVER I JUST ADD A FILE TO THE DIRECTORY IT NEVER WORKS...I HAVE TO OVERWRITE A FILE WITH THE SAME EXTENTION...SO HOW DO I GET IT ON? THANKS

Posted by: cricketsubcontr

using bitpim just goto /brew/images/shared and right click mouse to add file. Just the same as with any other image only problem is can't figure how to get the phone to read it correctly yet!

Does anyone have a complete copy of files on the 8900?? Screwed something up on my phone and need to replace the file but not sure which I file I screwed with

Aren't you the one who said that you can't destroy the system, that you simply turn the phone off and back on again, and it restores the needed files?

Posted by: cricketsubcontr

Yes I did but the problem lay's in the fact that I made changes to a file and would rather replace all the files with original's that way I can also learn from what was put on the phone from begining, Carrier specific's, and then try and reverse engeneer what was done. My stupidity was that I didn't do what I normally due which would be to back up everything before playing with it.

I can zip up my original backup and send it to you, if you pm me with your email, or email me at cricket@packcat.org and I'll reply with the files. (or let me know if there are individual files that you need)
