Any Mailstreet Account Holders Who Use MailStreet Defender?

I see that you can sign up for SPAM and virus protection, but I was wondering if this is a necessary addition. They have this little sentence in their MailStreet Defender information section, "Note: All MailStreet Exchange 2003 accounts are also protected by Trend Micro for Microsoft Exchange Server" which leads me to suspect that they already scan incoming email messages for viruses. I'm already shelling out enough money without tacking on redundant fees. Anyone have the 411 on this protection? Thanks.

I'm using it, and it does catch some spam that gets through spamassassin on my primary address, from which I forward most of my email. I'm satisfied with it, since I hate getting spam notifications. Some still slips through, but it gets about 50% of the stuff that has gotten through spamassassin.

I'm using Mailstreed Defender.....I really like it. It catches some legit messages so I had to add those addresses to my "Allow" list....

For some reason, most of the spam I get has malicious attachments so I set the filters to block anything with a *.zip or filename like "virus" or "attachment" because my forwarding system cleans some of the e-mails before they get to me. I used to get 2 or 3 spams a day and now I don't get any sent to my Blackberry which is worth it in my opinion.

dvlahakis and NicolasW,

This brings up a topic that I would REALLY love to discuss: The settings on your Microsoft Outlook client. What I would like to know is how the both of you have set up your email client to access your Mailstreet account in addition to other accounts you may have?

My situation is this:

I have a primary email address through work, which is accessible via POP3. I would prefer this to be the ONLY email address co-workers, family, & friends see. I'm using Microsoft Outlook 2003 and have my POP3 account set as the default. My mail is delivered to my Mailstreet Exchange mailbox on this Outlook client. When I draft a new message, my POP3 account is used, and the reply-to is set with that account. In the past, without the Mailstreet account, my workstation was using Popfile to handle SPAM and sort my messages according to rules. Now, Popfile can still work, but only if I use my Personal Folders as the primary mailbox. How do the both of you have things setup? Do you have email/calendar reconciliation? I have email/calendar reconciliation now, but if I changed my mailbox back to Personal Folders, will I lose that? Are you doing anything locally to filter out SPAM and if so, how did set that up?

With Popfile, the program acts like a proxy and the user determines how mail is handled. This is done with changes made to the mail server Outlook looks for, by using local ports and my user name incorporating the real mail server. Do either of you have similar setups? Have you elected to make Mailstreet your primary email address or do you just use it to forward your mail. I would like to receive my POP3 mail, as is, as opposed to a forward from myself, this way, I know who the original sender is.

Any tips or advice would definitely be appreciated. Thanks.

The email address I use currently is a user account on panix.com, but the email gets forwarded from there to both fastmail.fm and mailstreet seperately.

When I use outlook I use the fastmail imap account (aliased to the panix address) to send the mail, although the sent mail is stored on mailstreet which works perfectly for me, and appears to be from panix.com.

When I use the blackberry to send new mail I could use the web client to show the panix From address, but if I want to save the sent mail on mailstreet, I am forced to use the mobile.domain.net (my mailstreet domain) as my From.

I use Cloudmark spamnet, which can filter the mail coming into the Exchange account and my POP accounts. I've tried a bunch of other solutions (both free and paid) and have found this to be the best so far. I think the price is like $4/month or $39/year.

Also, if you use Outlook for both Exchange and POP, if I'm not mistaken, all mail must be delivered to the Exchange server inbox. In order to have it appear in your personal folders, you have to set up rules to move it automatically upon arrival. Same for sending--no matter which account you use, without setting up rules, the mail goes in your Exchange sent folder.

It seems that with all the possible ways to set up the Mailstreet account on Micsosoft Outlook 2003, there should be some documentation somewhere. I just set up my account using Mailstreet's wizard, but it just tells you what to do step-by-step. I'd like to know what happens when I change settings. When I create a new message, the default account it uses is my POP3. Replies come back properly, however, replies to replies go out as Mailstreet, which screws up the return address. I know it's all one big happy Inbox, but I'd really prefer the capability of hiding my Mailstreet account from recipients.

Also, mail sent from my Outlook client doesn't appear in the Sent Items folder on my BB. Is this the norm? It would have been nice to be able to see mail that I sent from my desktop on my BB, just in case I screwed up. Anyone know how this is done? I have my Outlook set to Mailstreet as the default folder and now have just now set Mailstreet as the default account. My POP3 account is now just a straight forward from the server to my Mailstreet account. I'll see if there are any behaviour changes

Could someone either point me to an Exchange source or provide examples of their settings?

I don't know if this fits your situation, but Mailstreet did tell me that they could change the email address you're sending from to any other domain which you own.

Also, I too do not see sent Outlook email on my blackberry.

cheers,

I'll contact Mailstreet and see how they can set things up on their end to get my account working the way I want it to.

BTW, one last thing, anyone know how to prevent the crap that gets moved to my Junk E-Mail Folder from being redirected to my BB? The stuff gets moved into the folder fine, but it still gets redirected to me. The messages have the folder icon on my BB as opposed to the envelope icon which means they are in the Junk Email folder on my desktop, but how can I prevent them from being sent to me in the first place. I have all the appropriate boxes checked or unchecked with regards to mail being redirected from that folder, but it still comes across. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Regaring the Junk email folder, I'm not sure, but I believe it is my desktop copy of Outlook that sends spam to that folder. In other words, it is a client side rather than server side filter. So those emails get to my Blackberry when they are sent because as far as the server is concerned they go to the inbox.

I never screwed with it but my lazy assumption was always that Outlook has some kind of spam filtering built in to the desktop version. I never expected it to work with the Blackberry. It actually catches very little of my spam, because about hundreds of emails are stopped daily first by spamassassin, and then another dozen or so by Defender. Anything that gets past them generally gets past Outlook's filter as well.

I'll keep a close eye on the Junk Email folder and then if nothing is being sent there inadvertently, I'll set Outlook to simply delete the stuff rather than move it to the Junk Email folder. So far it has been just Junk.

Again, BTW, Dimitri, I don't know which version of Outlook you are running, but MS released a service pack late last week or early this week that updates the way Outlook sees and handles junk mail. If you haven't already done so, you should go the their updates web site and download the latest service packs.

Thanks for all your help, and thanks go to NicolasW and MedEdGuy as well. Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

I know this is old but I also have Mailstreet and get the junk mail to my BB...it is in a folder, but I would like it to not show up at all (on the BB). Any ideas.
Thanks,
Damon

I'd recommend their Defender service. It's a marginal increase in cost and I've found that it eliminates 90% of incoming spam or better. It is quite aggressive though and will catch legitimate email so you have to check your quarantine folder periodically even if you have been receiving email from someone in the past.

I use Mailstreet/Defender as well - highly recommended..

If it's sent to the Junk Folder, there is a time lag between reconciliation. It comes in and is sent to your Junk Mail folder. For a brief time, you may see the message. After reconciliation occurs, it will disappear from your BlackBerry's Junk Mail folder.

will the item in your "quarrentine folder" show up on your BB? I suspect not, is there a way for the junk mail to look like a quarrentine folder and not get sent to the BB?

Posted by: cfjacksn

Quarrantine folder? I assume you're talking about Mailstreet Defender? The difference between the two folders is point of origin. Mailstreet's Defender handles mail before it is delivered to your mailbox. The junk mail folder gets mail moved to it by your mail client. (Presumably Outlook) the process seems to be a bit slower than anything handled by your Rules settings. If an incoming message meets a Rules criteria, then it is immediately moved to the appropriate folder. Anything else gets sent to your Inbox. I suspect that you can decrease the time any junk mail is visible by setting your junk mail filter to High and perhaps limiting the number of Rules you have. That's just speculation on my part. You can also use an email filter like GMail as a preliminary client that then forwards your mail to your primary.

Nope. The Defender Quarantine (sorry, I misused the word "folder") is only accessible via the web after you log on to the Defender site. You can choose to get email notifications that include a preview of what's in your Defender Quarantine. These messages never reach your Exchange box or the Blackberry unless you go and release them or set Defender to always allow a suspected sender through.
