Posted by: glockjs

it means you should close bitpim before RE connecting the phone

Posted by: superguy2004

what do you mean ....
u have to keep bitpim open to do it

Posted by: djwhetzel

I'm having the same problem. Bitpim used to work just fine and then one day after trying to add some files under the ringer section, it started giving me the same error. I know that you can't add files (your supposed to overwrite them) but I thought that I would try to see if I used someone elses "download_snd.txt" file and put the same number of ringer tones as they had, that it just might work. I guess I was wrong. Now I can't replace any files, I can't delete the folder and I can't even see what's in the folder now. The phone works fine, I just can't edit my ringers now. Could someone please help. Thanks.

Posted by: glockjs

start with the basics. uninstall and reinstall bitpim and the cable drivers

Posted by: superguy2004

THATS what i did . i added a file but i didnt know that i wasnt aloud . now my phone works fine but i cant access the thing at all .. and i did reinstall the whole thing but hmm :S

What was the filename of the ring that you added. There's a lot of misinformation in this thread.

I have had NO trouble adding items to the rng directory. However, I've never tried something with a filename outside the standard alphanumeric range of characters. i know for a fact that some of the Telus rings that have a "note" character after them trip up BitPim. it's possible that it's balking at something like that.

Man, some days I wish I had more time to work on my 8900 java BitPim replacement.

i dont know what the heck i should now . cuz i added a few files and ever since i havent been able to access the rng directory and its really bugging me cuz i can access teh PRELOAD one and upload it there, but then i cant use it as my ringtone

Posted by: superguy2004

see i dont know what to do now , i dunno whether its a problem with the phone or with bit pim , cuz i reinstalled the program and drivers 30 times so it cant be that. it worked fine until i added a file ... so if its a problem with the comp , ican just format no problem and itll be fine , but if its a problem with the phone then ? cuzi tried restoring to store defaults , and it hasnt changed anything except erased my whole phone book so what do i do

get the newest verison of bitpim. Do not mess with the ringer section. Have bitpims phone type set to other cdma. Go into filesystem. add ringers this way. you can use the second version of cids program here. http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=388537
I would recommend deleting your current ringtones and adding a blank download_snd.txt to your phone, to start fresh.

He's a Telus user, so Cid's program will not work for him. I have written something that Telus users have been using for quite a while. I'm interested in what the file that he uploaded was called. The issue he is experiencing is specifically related to BitPim not being able to handle a character in the name of one of the files he's added. That's my best guess anyway. If we had MORE INFORMATION we'd most likely be able to help. If he keeps complaining, and not providing more info, he won't find a resolution to his problem.

Thanks for the advice so far guys. I have been using the latest version of bitpim. 7.13. I thought that it might be bitpim also, so I tried to use it on one of my other computers and it did the same thing. The only way that I have been able to use bitpim is through the filesystem. The files that I added are some files that I got from one of the forums on here; I just can't remember which one it was. The first one that I added was "clubbin.mid" and the second one was "hey_ya.mid". I made a back up of my whole filesystem a while ago when everything was working ok, so tried to restore it from that and I get the same error. I was just thinking about trashing the phone and filing an insurance clam to get a new one if I can't get it to work. I even tried to buy some new ringers from BREW just to see if that might change the directory structure but that didn't work either. I would love to just delete all of the ringers and start over fresh, but I can't. I've even tried to delete the sound folder but had no luck. I think that the phone is just ****ed, but if there is a way to fix it, I'm sure you guys will figure it out. Thanks again for all the help so far.

djwhetzel,

can you delete the files from your phone? if not then maybe try to get older versions of bitpim and see if you can get it to work. Maybe try test6 since it had support for 8900. If you can somehow get into the filesystem I would delete all the ringers and overwrite download_snd.txt with a blank one.

Posted by: djwhetzel

I can overwrite and delete pretty much anything in the tree other than the ringer tone section. I've tried bitpim versions 8, 11, and 13 so far. I will try to find version 6 and see what happens. I'll let you know as soon as I find it. Thanks again.

Posted by: djwhetzel

I just tried version .62 and still the same. It just hangs up and gives me an error when trying to access the ringer folder. It looks the same as the link on the first post in this forum.

Posted by: centran

I am assuming the ringtones do not show up in the media gallery becuase then you could delete them straight out.
I am running out of suggestions.
delete the whole usr dir maybe? then recreate it and make sure download_snd.txt is blanked out.

you can still view and modify other files on the phone right? because I had this error before but it was for just trying to view the entire filesystem. I ended up re-installing the usb driver and then having to go into settings and change the com port. I now have two com ports for the prolific usbtoserial. Then bitpim did the same error again and all I did was switched to the old com port to make it work.

Posted by: djwhetzel

Any time I try to delete anything that has to do with the ringer file, it won't delete. It keeps giving me that error. I will try to reinstall the drivers like you suggested and let you know. Thanks.

I figured it out guys. In order for bitpim to read the ringer dir. all of the files that you have on your phone have to match what's in your download_snd.txt. You can have files on your phone and they will not show up unless download_snd.txt tells it that they are there. I added ringers with out changing my download_snd.txt file first. Now fixing this problem is a little tricky. What I did was first made a copy of my download_snd.txt file and put is in a folder on my computer that way I could edit one and still keep my orignal just in case I messed it up plus you'll need it later. Next you have to remember exactly what files you put on your phone. If you can't remember what the files were, then I'm not sure if it can be fixed or not. If you can remember you will have to use ringtonetool to edit your download_snd.txt file so that the files that you added will show up on your phone. What I did was I just wrote all of the possibiltys to my download_snd.txt file and overwrote the one on my phone, rebooted the phone and went in and the ones that played I just deleted them. After I did that, I took the orignal download_snd.txt and wrote it back to the phone, rebooted the phone and then I was able to read the ringer dir with bitpim once again. I hope this helps you out. It took me a while of messing with it to figure it out. Thanks again for all that helped.

ok guys heres the skinny bitpim doesn't access the db files its just bitpim doesn't like really big file names i've had this problem and fixed it since bitpim won't read the directory the phone will but you have to have the file in the download_snd.txt file with the exact name used delete it with the phone and you should be able to access the dir with bitpim again this is why my program for the 92 byte US brew users limits the file name to a total of 15 characters so this doesn't happen

Posted by: djwhetzel

My problem was, I tried to add ringers to my phone with out editing the download_snd.txt file. I didn't even know anything about that file. I should have done a little more research before messing with it. I learned a lesson from all of this though and luckily I was able to fix my mistake.

Posted by: superguy2004

but guys where the hell do i find this .TXT file and what do i do with it in order to access the ring directory from my comp

Posted by: cid420420

the download_snd.txt file is in the /db/ directory you need to use zalidex's program on your since your a telus user and add the name of the ringtone you added to the ringer directory once you do that put the download_snd.txt file back on your phone in the /db/ directory you should be able to see the tone in media gallery now erase it you should be able to access the ringtone directory in bitpim the name must be the same as the one you stuck in the ringers directory before you couldnt read it with bitpim

Posted by: superguy2004

thanks ill try that but whats zalidex's program ?

and also i tried hexdumping the snd file and its a bunch of numbers

Posted by: vox8900

Read the entire first thread "How to for Cricket 8900" on this forum before messing with your phone. There is no reason anyone should be screwing their phone up anymore since all the screwing up has already taken place in order to write the thread that told you how to do it right.

Use the search feature people.

Posted by: superguy2004

thats if ur starting from the begining , i ****ed my phone up , so now i gotta fix it using the download_snd.txt file
im just not sure what to do
the previous reply was very helpful i just dont know what the zalidex program is or whatever its called

Posted by: glockjs

download that download_snd.txt to your puter. blank everything out and save. overwrite that file with the one on your phone and you can delete all the files under ringers. everything should be good again. sucky part is starting from nil from what you already had on there but hay, your phone will work

Posted by: superguy2004

but thats what i did, i saved it , deleted everything , and overwrote whats on the phone
but then i still cnat get into rng directory

Posted by: glockjs

time to check all the basics.

what test bitpim are you running?

what driver?

might sound stupid, but square 1 is always the place to start.

Posted by: cid420420

the problem is that the file you stuck in the ringers directory is still the it's never been deleted thats why you still can't access the directory do like i told you earlier and use zalidex's program to add the name of the tone you last inserted to the download_snd.txt file the link to his program is here
http://www.zaediex.org/8900/
it must be the same name as the tone screwing up your ringers directory or you can send me a e-mail to cid@woh.rr.com of your download_snd.txt file and the exact name of the file you put in the ringers directory and i'll send you back a new download_snd.txt back that you can overwrite your your currnet on with so the media gallery will reconize the bad file name and you can erase it with media gallery and regain access to the ringers directory it's really not hards try it yourself first

Posted by: vox8900

And people once again DO NOT DELETE FILES WITH BITPIM, only through your phones menus.

Posted by: 2tone

When I screwed my download_snd.txt file up I went to the ringtone section and deleted all the ringtones on my phone that I had downloaded by using the delete function on the phone with it not connected to PC. I re-established communication with the phone via bitpim 0.7-test8 and the download_snd.txt file was back to its original 0 size and started redownloading.
Worked fine.
