CDM8900 free WAP?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: NeoRowen

I've been looking around but can't seem to find anything off hand. A while back I saw that you could put info into your phone to get a free wap working so you could browse the net for free.

Anyone have the info for that?

Posted by: cuwmb2

1. Type "##2769737 {END}" or "##BROWSER {END}", without the "" of course. This will take you to the Browser Config. screen.

2. Go into the "UP Proxy IP" menu. Then "UP Link 1". Then "AP1-IP". Change the IP Input to "129.123.17.148" using the {SEND} key as "." Then "OK".

3. Next, go into the "AP1-Port" and change the Port Input to "9201". Then "OK".

4. Do the same for the "AP2-IP" and "AP2-Port". When you are finished, press {END} and reboot your phone.

TA-DA!! FREE WAP!!

Posted by: robnitro

Nice, but then I get an error that it cant connect to the openwave site. What do I do to change the website etc?

Posted by: cuwmb2

Change your homepage to "http://wap.google.com"

Posted by: robnitro

security error: key not recognized... doh!

Posted by: djkl407

When I use the WEB on my 8900...is it free durin daytime or will it use my minutes?

Posted by: cuwmb2

Try again robnitro, it'll work...mine's workin' right now!

Not sure on the minutes thing...my guess is that it uses them.

Posted by: djkl407

is it possible to get AIM or MSN apps on 8900? u got AIM screename?

Posted by: robnitro

nope, just tried wap.google.com without the http:// and same error... after entering that homepage in the options, it tries to connect and comes up with the key not found error....

Posted by: _w0

cuwmb2 you rock bro... worked perfect for me. So Cellular South guys note-- this WILL work for our phones! Buying WAP isn't even an option from them at the moment, let alone getting it for free!

How about email I don't subscribe to text messaging so I can't message from my phone that way... will email server settings work with the WAP connection?

Posted by: _w0

Hmmm it worked for a while, then stopped? Now it says 'Network Not Responding'

Posted by: cuwmb2

Quote:

robnitro, when you enter the Google page, it has to have the "http://" or it won't work...I just tested it on my phone!

HAPPY SURFING!!

Posted by: _w0

It did work but I'm still getting 'Network Not Responding'

Posted by: cuwmb2

I just now took these pics...at this very point in time, it is working!! Check your typing!!

Posted by: _w0

I verified that I have it right, where did you get these settings? Maybe there is another set that will work for me?

Posted by: robnitro

I didnt notice the other 2 sets of UP setups! I just did 1, thinking the primary and secondary were all, doh!

Thanks, now to find some good wap sites, like to get weather, news (maybe instant messaging) and email!

If you have a list, id like to hear it!

GO TO http://www.airsoftwireless.com/airim/login.wml for aim on your phone

Posted by: jdubvdub

Works on Alltel!! put it on my wife's phone last night. I'm already a mobileweb4u subscriber, but she wasnt.
Worked exactly as described!

thanks

Posted by: cuwmb2

no prob...happy for you

Posted by: _w0

I'm not sure what is going on, like I said I put in the IP/Port info for both 1/2 then changed the Home page to wap.google.com and everything worked fine, I exited out and tried it again to find my home page back at openwave, reset it to google... and I get the network not responding error-- with the same result every time.

Posted by: y0itzkevin

What does this mean?

Error
Unsupported request type internal home-edit?0:Http://wap.google.com

I did everything you said to do. Thanks.

Posted by: cuwmb2

_w0 make sure you have the "http://" in front of the "wap.google.com". If you do not, you WILL get an error!

Hope this helps out!

Posted by: cheezomlet

Hello,
I am also not having any luck setting up the WAP on my 8900 with Verizon either.... I am even running my own WAP (now.WAP proxy 2.5) on my server over a cable modem....

I am defentely connecting, I had a password and user name setup and is said I needed username and password.... I cant figure where to input that info????

So anyways I turned all the username and password stuff off and I get the same error "Unsupported request type internal home-edit?0:Http://wap.google.com" and I typed it in correctly I am certain.

Each time i get this error I have to go retype the homepage in. It reads "home-edit?0:Http://wap.google.com"

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I am using the http:// header.

Posted by: robnitro

lower case H, remember that, it worked for me

Also, did you change in up proxy ip,
UP link1
UP link2
UP link3
Inside each of those the AP1-IP and AP2-IP and their ports.

Do all, and it should work

You might just want to try to add and go to some bookmark too, that may be less hassle since the home is a bit weird.

Posted by: _w0

No, didn't use a lower case H-- I'll try that now, although I don't see why it should matter.

Posted by: _w0

I'm so confused because it worked the first time I tried it.

Posted by: robnitro

Strange, I had that error when I didnt fill out ALL of the UP IP addresses. Go through 1 2 3 and sub of each 1 and 2 to be sure the ports and IPs are correct.

You may also need to restart the phone to get it to work.

Though, IMO, wap really stinks! Anyone have some useful sites for weather and traffic ?

Robert

Posted by: _w0

I have both 1 and 2 setup in all 3 of the main options for IP/Port settings.

Posted by: lickwid

mine worked good, did everything that was said, works fine, what are some WAP friendly sites?

Posted by: robnitro

are you on verizon?
try surfing the wap when you are in town, maybe the network by you sucks???

I second the request for some wap sites... I will try to search some today.

Posted by: lickwid

i figured it out, hope it helps you guys, basically when you bring up the google screen, there's an item called "entire web", click on that, which will bring up another menu, choose, "mobile web", and from there, you'll be able to search for mobile friendly sites, i was able to use espn to search sport scores, etc., pretty cool

Posted by: _w0

I'm on Cellular South.

Posted by: Kanz

Hey

WHen you guys speak of free WAP, how free is it really? What I mean is are you guys still paying any sort of 'airtime' calling rates and refering to the "free wap" as simply, no data charges OR is it completely free to use?

Chur
Kanz

Posted by: vox8900

Of course it is free! BUT only if you have minutes left for the month or at nights and on weekends.

So 99.9% free

Posted by: vox8900

Hey All,
I was wonder during your browsing have you ever been able to see a picture (ie. gif or jpg) that was on a wap enabled site. Im begining it to think all we will ever see is text.

I just tried that, changed both in all three UP links. Again, I have cricket. I tried turning off my phone and then back on. Went into Brew and nothing. It says unable to retrieve catalog.

_w0, maybe the reason you did get "on" and now you don't is because Cellular South is testing it's system periodically and at different locations for the roll out of web access July 15th. Just like when they expanded our local area CDMA coverage into Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. I was in Mobile and got a local signal only in about a square mile area once right before they turned the entire system on. Give it a couple of weeks and we'll all be able to play.

Cool deal, hope that is the case-- any idea what the next phone they're selling is?

You just need to change the UP Link # of the one your phone is set to use. If you don't know which one it uses, you need/should set them all!

Posted by: lminor7

Thanks So Much!!

I changed my homepage to http://wap.google.com and BADA BING!

I did get "Network Not Responding" once or twice but that only lasts a short time when it happens.

Question: How can I tell that this is free? I mean, rather than wait till I get my next bill

Thanks Again!

Posted by: cuwmb2

Normally you have to go to you phone dealer and have them configure it. When they do that, they will start charging you and track it. I think you still use your minutes when you use the web feature, though. So, keep track of those "free" surfin' minutes!

Hi guys

I am trying to set up the free WAP but I can't even get past step 1.

Here is a shot of what I get after I complete step one

1. Type "##2769737 {END}" or "##BROWSER {END}", without the "" of course. This will take you to the Browser Config. screen.

Any I missing something?

Any help would be much appreciated,

I did these, then hit the Web button... its just sitting there with a
"Sending))))))))))" animation at the bottom of the screen. Also a "N" appears next to my signal strength icon. Eventually I get a "Server not responding" message, but the "Sending))))" thing continues to scroll by.

WTF?

How do I reset the homepage? Is that my problem?
EDIT: OK, search revealed a way to change my homepage... still now working that I can see. same "Sending ))))))))" thing going over and over.

Edit2: now going back, some buttons have started to appear in the browser window (retry, cancel) but my homepage reset did not take. I have tried again to reset to wap.google.com, and now its doing the same "Sending)_))))))" thing, N by the singal meter, and "Server not responding" message. WTF?

Posted by: 2tone

Same here.

How do you get the home page change to save?

I think my problem is signal strenth and the analog "A" showing.

There is a little lock by the pen beside settings.

When you hit the web button Openwave screen comes up with RSA Security emblem on it.

wo have you been able to get back on?

Posted by: duh123

not able to acces the site from my Verizon phone either. I am able to ping the site and do a traceroute from my computer.

I have a audiovox 9155 and motorola t720 with Alltel. i have tried to connect to the free wap service with both phones. the 9155 has the conecting))))))) screen and then it says "Network Not Responding" and gives me the done and retry options. i have my homepage set to http://wap.google.com. on my t720 the connecting and sending pages cycle. can anyone help me??

Posted by: lminor7

Well...I hope this is temporary.

Yesterday and today I have also been seeing - sending))))))))) - eventually followed by "Server not Responding".

Can any of you smart people tell if Free WAP is still possible?

Thanks Much

Posted by: capoeirastyle

I'm havin the same problem. A week or so ago i tried it, and i only changed the first uplink, then set the homepage to http://wap.google.com and it worked. But then i started getting crappy service and i didnt know if it was bc of that. so i changed the up link back to what it was. But today i tried it again, and it didnt work. I either got "Server not responding" or sending))))))) and that just went on forever. then i changed all 3 uplink and ports, but im still getting the samething. I changed the homepage too, but sometimes that resets by itself. Is there anyway to fix this? thanks!

Posted by: vox8900

Right now , that gateway appears to be down. Mine worked last week perfectly but not today.
Give it a few days and try again, if not we will have to find new IP addys to use.

Stupid question: Where do I change my WAP homepage?

Posted by: apollosmith

I just want to let you all know that my gateway IP, as posted in the images in the first page of this thread, is available for testing purposes. It is not a full scale Gateway that you can expect to use forever. I was taking a major bandwidth hit, so I turned it off for the last few days. You're welcome to use it to test your connections and do moderate browsing using a very fast and reliable gateway, but if people continue to abuse the connection I will have to randomly disable it. In the meantime, the gateway is up and running - please use it wisely.

You can change the home page when you get the little openwave box in the upper left hand screen. Just click OK when you highlight that box and go down to settings, then to change homepage.

I also have a question, I get "Feature Not Avail." when I try to change the homepage on the new IP's given. The old ones, I used to be able to change the IP's but then could'nt sign onto wap.google.com. I changed all of the Port settings, etc., what the hell am I doing wrong??

i have followed the instructions in this thread many times but cant get on line when i restart the phone it will go back to the original home page that came on phone any ideas? cellularone is who Im with

Posted by: Zyxwv88

I'm with US Cellular, and although theoretically their system is capable of data if they turn it on, it isn't working at the current time. I am hypothisizing however that this method might work on the system anyways.

The problem that I'm having is that when I select the mobile web and say to connect, I get an info box that says "Info. Service is not offered". Personally, I suspect that the browser is just disabled. Does anyone know if it's possible to replace the wap browser with the wap browser from another provider? I know that the software is pretty touchy, but if someone has any ideas, I'm more than willing to give it a try and risk a phone.

i dunno, mines working with the first one, and i have no current problems.

Posted by: mikey4226

so what exactly are "network" minutes (when you're using the free wap)

are they just regular minutes that get taken out of your allowance? or do they get charged differently?

Posted by: lminor7

so what exactly are "network" minutes (when you're using the free wap)

I've been using WAP for a while now and the only difference I've seen on my bill is a new category called

DATA PRODUCTS AND SERVICES.

The ONLY charge in that category for me has been $1.00, the cost of emailing myself four pictures (before I downloaded brewsky)

I haven't really kept track of when I'm phone-surfing but I'm sure I'm only being charged as though I'm using the phone as a phone.

I hope this helps

Well i guess i was kidding cant go to any web sites says bad gate way what now any help? one step UP and 2 steps down oh well thats life

Posted by: psiconoclast

DeadMan: What did you mean when you said you got it working?

Were you able to pull up anything at all?

My understanding is that Metro PCS does not allow 'generic' IP traffic on their networks. Thus, Brew can work, but only by traveling through the Brew gateway. The generic gateways are simply not reachable.

Now, I know that some Brew applications can reach the 'net (SodaPop comes to mind), but to the best of my knowledge, there really isn't any way to get the phone's standard wap browser to work. Since brew apps can reach the 'net, though, I guess someone could (in theory) write a wap browser for brew, and that could work.

Dunno, but I'll buy a beer for the first person to show me how to get wap working on Metro PCS.

I used to have verizon mobile web and not I got rid of it and when I am trying to do mobile web on my 8900 it is getting security error: key not recognized

It could be that the security thing was set up in the settings. I tried to go there and remove it. It still does not work. The openwave browser does not save the homepage too. It still has the openwave.com as the homepage that could be a problem too.

Could someone help?

I think your problem is that you didnt set your port to 9201. If it is set at 9203 you will get the security error message. Hope this helps.

http://smithplanet.com/8600/#freewap

They're pretty much the same for the 8900 except the fact that to get to settings (step 6) you push 9 instead of 8. Oh, and I used the IP address in the post above, not his. I couldn't get his to work. AND, as I said above, I can't get the homepage to change.

4. Do the same for the "AP2-IP" and "AP2-Port". When you are finished, press {END} and reboot your phone.

TA-DA!! FREE WAP!!

I am not sure if it works for all carriers, but try this....get a free wap ip from somewhere
wap.crjt.net could be one place.
Then change all the ip and ports on the browser to be this new ip and port. remmber not just one of the ip and port but all of them.
Then go to a place where you have enough bars, strong connection and try it. If it does not work then your phone's firmware is somehow blocking it. But my guess would be that it should work. As long as there is a data service on any provider and the phones are similar it should work. It is very hard to add authentication stuff into the wap in favor of performance, so we all get free wap.

While your 8900 is sending and receiving over and over - PRESS AND HOLD the ZERO. It will immediately time out your phone. You then need to change your homepage from www.openwave.com to the alternate gateway homepage. If you don't, you will never get it to work. Good Luck.

Okay, I did this.. Or thought I did.. and as I said.. this keeps my phone in the sending loop...

Posted by: ashuv

Hi,
Do this again, step by step.
use this IP 24.3.27.144
port 9201

Now remember there are probably 3 ip and 3 ports or may be more to change...change all of them.
Then during odd hours when not many are using the wap or the network, go to a place where you have a strong connection and try to go to http://wap.yahoo.com

remember to type this exactly with the http:// do not miss http://

This has to work, there is nothing for them to block. I hope you know how to change the homepage etc. Keep trying in a place that has good connection. In case this does not work at all. Call the customer service and add wireless web to your plan for a day and then call up and cancel. This would unlock the browser, if at all they are trying to be clever about it. It makes no sense it is like your machine that is sending packets and receiving packets it would be prohibitive to block packets. It must be something on the phone, like an initial lock. So that will come off if you sign up for there plan for a day.
But try what I said first.

Tried it.. with that EXACT ADDY... and got an error back of no WML content.

Posted by: ashuv

This means that your wap is working. Somehow the data is not wml content. Keep trying wap websites...

Wouldn't the WAP.yahoo.com sorta be set-up correctly for WML??? Someone want to test a site.. and tell me that it worked with thier 8900 on VERIZON? Also, the date and time.. and if you used the "FREE" wap in order to access it.

Thanks.

Posted by: rwescoat

I'm taking it that no one that uses MetroPCS has been able to use "free" WAP, correct?

Posted by: ashuv

Hi,
It is 11.51 PM Pacfic Standard time and I am trying and getting no WML content. It could be that yahoo site is experiencing difficulty. My wap has worked for over a month now. This does happen every now and then. Could be that my wap gateway has problem.
Ashutosh

Posted by: ashuv

My wap works. I got that error message because my homepage was somehow set to www.openwave.com
This is bizarre, How come the home page reset itself to the default, seems like Verizon or somebody uploaded some program on my cell. Somehow it was reset, I cant explain how it happened. In short my wap is working fine and dandy...so if you keep getting that same response keep updating your homepage by changing it to http://wap.yahoo.com and try connecting until it happens. Each time it fails change it and try again.

This DOES NOT work for TELUS.. If anyone got it working in the main land in BC, Canada with a telus phone( I have the UPDATED Audiovox 8900 ), let me know. I hate the whole '$.02 a page thing', if I can get this thing to work, I'd appreciate it..

Signing off..

I know that this ? has been asked earlier in the thread but I didn't see an answer...

IPs :
129.123.17.148 <-- not working (least didn't work for me)
12.25.203.11 <-- this works for me though the owner i believe
said not to use it a lot
24.3.27.144 <-- haven't tried yet

are there anymore IPs out there that anyone knows of and also have any verizon customers got billed for using this

thanks in advance
4cid_Fr34k

Posted by: ashuv

no u get billed for minutes only. I have the americas choice plan and they deduct minutes just like a voice call.
Gateways that u r quoting may not be working. I have a DSL line but have a dynamic ip. If a lot of people are there who are willing to chip in a $ a week and I can upgrade to static ip. I will be willing to run the gateway for people. Hardware and setup is not an issue, but I never use the web on the mobile since it is to cumbersome typing on the small keyboard, so have no need to do it for myself. But will be a good project to help people enjoy their wireless web.
Ashutosh

Posted by: 4cid_fr34k

what kind of software/hardware do you have to have setup?
I have a constant internet connection aswell and would rather not have to route thru someone else's property before surfing the net on my phone ...

4cid_Fr34k

Posted by: ashuv

u can setup a wap gateway. Try googling it. You will find resources on how to do it. You would need to install a server that listens on a given port for WAP messages. You need to have a static ip though. Most ISPs give dynamic ip for cheaper price, then everytime your ip changes you would have to change the phone settings. I have not invested enough time on it. So do not know of it right away, but am sure that linux does have some wap gateway server.

so has anyone figured out if this will work on an 8610?

Posted by: 4cid_fr34k

well since the thread is CDM8900 Free WAP
most people with 8610s prolly aren't looking around in here unless someone that has a 8900 also has a 8610 is participating your best bet would be to start a new thread along the lines of 8610 Free WAP?

I have Cellular South also... but I guess it doesn't work for me because I haven't activated Brew. This is all stupid for them to use Brew. We should have just a regular WAP service.

Posted by: Insaneminds

yea.i don't see why they didn't do that but i think they know of free wap and are jus tryin to be secure bout there stuff.all brew is is really jus a direct link to you account.thats why you can only pay for the stuff you purchase on your bill.i am tryin to find a way around it.i heard somethin about a applet loader or somethin

How do you people not know by now that the providers are blocking free WAP? It has been discussed to death on this board. When you try free WAP the provider gets the IP from your phone and block it. Simple.......no free WAP anymore

That is because Verizon has disabled the IP address of EVERY phone that doesn't pay for WAP... meaning, you can't get it without paying... no matter how hard you try... sorry

Finally!! Someone listens!! lol... thank you for being the voice of reason lulu... I almost went on a killing spree, but your understanding, and calm voice of reason has subsided my urge to kill flesh... so I'm off to CounterStrike to kill virtual flesh, lol

Posted by: lulu836

No prob. I feel like doing the same thing sometimes. How can they read a board for even a small length of time and not get the message about "free" WAP?

Posted by: lickwid

I had free working WAP on my Audiovox 8900, and now have upgraded to the LG VX9800, and I can say for certain that Free WAP lives. It still works fine, and with the new Mobile Web 2.0, it's much better. Just change the proxy to a working proxy, and you're good to go, but of course it still uses your minutes unless you have VCast or Mobile Internet plan.

Posted by: lulu836

H-m-m-m-m-m-m......Mobile Web and "free WAP". Let me ask you, are you paying for Mobile Web?
