New Blackberry with Bluetooth

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Saw a Prototype on Wednesday. Didn't catch the model number and was told to keep it hush hush.
But I'm an ××××××× and was never one for keeping secrets...

Anyone else got any info on the Model?

I heard it is scheduled for release in September.

If RIM keeps this up I'll have to stop purchasing Nokia!

Yars.

Anyone know if this is true? I am sure everyone would want one with bluetooth, would be great for a bt headset or to allow a computer to use the bb to get on the gprs network....

Way to keep it hush hush...post it on a cellphone forum

The model is a 7290 and will be available on the GSM/GPRS network.

Any idea of the timing for a 7290 release? Anything else new on it besides bluetooth?

Yes ... any info people could share would be great. We promise to keep it hush-hush

I assume from the model number that it's the same form factor as the current 72xx series ....??

ooh pro... this should be interesting to see.

The MILLION DOLLAR question is, whether this new Blackberry can act as a GPRS MODEM for a laptop computer.

If it can, then you've got me. Gimme! Gimme!

Posted by: AndyVX

I seem to think they'll block that function out. I mean, I thought that was the whole reason there was no BT on Blackberry's thus far.

Anyways, guess we'll find out one of these days.

At WES, the question was posed re: using the BB as a wireless modem. They did say that it was one of the top things asked for and they were planning on doing it in the 4.0 timeframe.

Thats so cool. I just lost a bid on ebay for a 7230. I'd be really butthurt if i bought a 7230 knowing an improved model is on the way. I know the 7730 is coming out but I like the 7230's size. Any chance of WiFi blueberry ??

In other threads it has been mentioned that RIM demonstrated a WiFi BB at WES. No GPRS or CDMA - WiFi only.

Posted by: ikuma3

WiFi only ? That kinda sucks especially when other companies are putting bluetooth, and WiFi together in some of their phones.

I don't care about other phones. Can they do push e-mail through my BES (and the Nokia 6820 keyboard is a joke). And Palm is not a valid comparison. Operating System is too hacked and unstable.

RIM cares about security and battery life. Neither of which, IMHO, play nicely with BT or WiFi. And when I see a BB with a camera, I'll give up completely. Not that keen on SD either.

I'm not into bb having a camera either but i would like one that could surf web pages faster than 56k . I know their mainly for e-mail but being able to view webpages at faster speed imho would make it a more complete PDA.

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

True - but is Wifi the answer? You would need a converged WiFi GPRS/CDMA device, since WiFi is not rolled out enough or universally to make it worthwhile. I am not pooh-poohing the idea; I'm just not sure of the market for it...

Posted by: ikuma3

I was gonna ask in the t-mobile forum but since you have t-mobile, If we get EDGE would we really need hotspot subscriptions? I'm not sure about speed but isn't the hotspot service alot faster than EDGE ?
I think WiFi will be a great alternative when they can broadcast further distances like cell towers, if they don't already. I don't the market is ready to provide it yet either. They say it's cheaper to talk over WiFi ,VOIP,whatever you call it, I think it will come more into play when the networks get too congested and towns won't let companies build anymore cell towers.

What I would really want right now is an updated 7280. Exact same size, but with the same kind of screen/backlight as the 7780 and PC4. Oh, and a little bit of a thicker/wider/something-or-other scroll wheel.

I would want BT, but only if I can connect to my laptop with it.

I hate to burst your bubble, but the Blackberry Browser can only render at about 10 to 15 kilobits per second -- the CPU in the Blackberry is too slow to even go 56k.

I think a faster CPU is more important than a faster connection than 56k, since the Blackberry can't even render webpages as fast as it can be downloaded off the airwaves.

Reqwireless webviewer improves on this somewhat (text is still painfully slow, but images download much faster).
