I don't know very much about the inner workings of Japanese cellular phones...
When I lived in Japan, I had an NTT DoCoMo 503i phone and a Jphone too... I still have them, but I was wondering if there is ANY way for me to get these phones working in Canada/USA now, or are they just fancy paperweights now? -laugh-

What operating frequency do Japanese handy's use? And can they ever be modified to work here??

...very confusing

there's no way for you to get a Japanese phone working in the State......or Canada.........

they don't use any GSM, TDMA, CDMA

i'm not sure what they use.but all i know is that they use something that other countries doesn't have

They are PDC, which can literally be lumped in the same class as GSM and TDMA, since they're all based off of a form of TDMA

In fact, I saw a Nokia 2160 as one of the early NTT DoCoMo phones. I was like "WHOA!"

Anyways, No, you can't use it in the US or canada. The only one you might be able to swing by with is a AU by KDDI "Global Passport phone", and then only on Verizon Wireless 800mhz CDMA in the US.

I think they work on 1.5 GHz

Japan uses CDMA 1 Jphone, Docomo, pstyle and so on are all using what is currently now known as 1x. Docomo is now using WCDMA. This is getting closer to 3G technology. I have a d504i which is similar to your 503i. I just saw an advert for the Motorola StarTac (triband like the one Telus uses) which is being promoted as a world CDMA phone in Tokyo.

There have been Japanese "world" phones that work in Canada/US for quite a while.

Wow... that's interesting info! Unfortunately I didn't see anywhere on that website saying what network type those "global" phones use... hmmm. Are they CDMA phones? Or do they use GSM?? [although everyone says GSM is never used in Japan...]

At least the "other" mode is CDMA as those phones work only in Western Canada, which implies CDMA, and probably 800Mhz (I am not sure on the frequency.... but the old Telus west network).

Theoretically then, would it be possible to purchase one of those KDDI AU global phones and activate it over here??

I wonder if there's any place on the net that can import Japanese cell phones to North America heh

the answer is yes. But you can only use those japanese "world" phone on western Canada and US.... at least not Toronto.

Also... you might have to use a japanese phone number.

umm.... if i m rich ... i will do that... but
