what is WAP? what is the point? why is it there? DO we really need it ?

WAP was designed with low bandwidth portable devices (namely cell phones) in mind, and defines how WAP browsers talk to other systems (and contains the WML specification among others). The problem with normal web pages is they weren't designed for the small screen that normal cell phones have (especially most designs), and by using WAP/WML, which was designed for use on small devices (like cell phones), it is much more efficient.

You only need it if you want to surf the wireless web (it's built into most if not all phones that can surf the wireless web), but if you don't care about that, then you don't need it.

does it cost money????

No more than what your provider charges for wireless web access (assuming you have a wireless web capable phone). Cost for using the wireless web depends on the provider.
