There's info on this here.
All I can say is my MP3s are working great without causing any problems or slowdowns with the phone. I have 9 MP3s on there all clips from songs that I shaved down to around 30 seconds each resulting in files around 100k. I really don't see the need for more because now as I get tired of old ones I just delete them as I add new ones so I think I'm safe. When people hear my phone ring and hear such great sound they are amazed and are very "jealous". hehe pretty cool. Oh well, good luck.
My current ringers:
1. james bond theme (sounds awesome and my favorite)
2. mission impossible theme (also really sounds awesome)
3. sapranos theme (cool but a little too much base for it)
4. bohemain rhapsody (the head banging part - you know like from the wayne's world movie when they're all in the car)
5. opening 30 sec of disturbed's "down with the sickness"
6. inspector gadget theme (when I'm feeling nerdy)
7. matrix theme (a little unidentifiable but cool)
8. open 30 sec of the who's "Baba O'Reilly" (soooo cool)
9. and last but certainly not least... spongebob's "bring it around town" followed by the closing theme

check your memory level:
menu > Get It Now > Settings > Manage Apps > System Info (click "OK" here to get a read out of what you have used)

I have 1.20 MB's MAX of data I'm putting on my phone. That's way less than the 2.0 something MB's the phone has so I have no idea why my phone broke.
Should I even risk putting ringtones on my new phone?
