LG L1200 Software?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Hackerson

Has anyone successfully sync'd (via infraRed) with any of the available software downloads mentioned here? BitPim, PIMP, LG GSM?

I have attempted BitPim and LG GSM with no luck.

Thanks

Posted by: Hackerson

IrCOMM2K is required....once that is installed and configured I was able to connect to the phone and transfer contacts...

Posted by: LG-L1200User

I have ircomm2k installed and running. I'm running BitPim version 0.7-test11 but I cannot get the phone and laptop to communicate. The seem to establish a sucessful IR connection, but BitPim always responds with "The Phone is not responding while transitioning mode from none to brew".

So you know what I' might be doing wrong?

Have you gotten you L1200 to communicate with BitPim via IR?

What version of BitPim are you using?

Thanx
-- Joe

Posted by: LG-L1200User

Another question.... Since LG L1200 is not available as one of the supported phones in the Options screen, what are phone are you telling BitPim to use?

Posted by: injaneer

I do not believe Bitpim has support for the L1200 phone. However look through this thread, we have managed to get the LG GSM software (certain versions) to work with the L1200 even with IRDA.

Thread

Posted by: LG-L1200User

Thanks injaneer. I was hoping I could go with IR. But it looks like I'll need a cable. I guess that's not a big deal, it just would have been cooler to go IR ;-)

I have the LG GSM software: LG ContentsBank and LG PCSync.

Any advice on what cable to get?

Can I get any USB cable that supports L1200 G4010 VX4500 etc. like the one at
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...5716651554&rd=1

Thanks for you advice.

-- Joe

Posted by: injaneer

Yes that is the exact cable I purchased.

I have heard of some people in that thread actually getting the IRDA working, However there have been problems transfering large pictures to PC. I think however the IRDA does work.

But I figured for around $13-$15 the cable was worth it for the transfering.

Posted by: LG-L1200User

Thanks again injaneer.

I just purchased the cable. It only cost a penny, but shipping and handeling was $12.98. You gotta laugh at some of the auctions on eBay. <g>

So, it should be here in a few days.

I'll post details here in case anyone wnats to know how this all worked.

What can be used to download java games thru usb cable to a L1200? Found LG contents bank and L1200 Handset manager in this forum, both connect and up/download tones, images, etc. but no Java. Any new ideas?

Posted by: LG-L1200User

Simnmel,

I downloaded and installed the software from the following link:

http://www.lge.com/products/mobile/...00_English.exe&

When you execute this program it looks like an install package, but all it does is extract the install package. So, select custom or modify. You may be presented with an empty list of options to select. Don't worry, just continue. Note where it says it is installing the software. When it is done, go to that directory and run setup.exe. This is the actual installation package. (Who ever packaged this software didn't know what they were doing.)

This is the LG GSM software. There are three packages in the install package: ContentsBank, PCSync, LGInternetKit which allows you cell phone to act as a modem for you PC. I installed ony the first two. That is, during the install wizard, I selected Custom (instead of Express) and un-checked the LGInternetKit package.

The about screen for LG Contents Bank says
LG1100 - v2.2 (2.2.7.04.02-EN)
Copyright (c) 2003

I cannot get the IR to work and haven't received my USB cable yet, so I don't know if any of this will actually work but I'll post my results as soon as I get my USB cable.

LG PCSync allows you to manage your cells phone address book.

LG Contents Bank supports:
Ringtones, Wallpaper, Java, and Picture

As a matter of fact, Contents Bank comes with 13 Java games that can be installed on the phone.
ActionBasket, DolphinMaya, GyroDrop, JustImpact
Multiply, Necomanch, PhantomEagle, SpaceBall
SpeedSolitaire, StopWatch, Submarine,
SwordOfWind, ThunderRacing

As soon as I get my USB cable (it should be here this week), I'll post my results.

Good Luck

Joe, thanks for your reply. I have already installed the software and am able to transfer images and ringtones. I spoke to LG yesterday and they said that this program will not work with JAVA/L1200. They directed me to www.susteen.com, who is their software vendor and maker of Data Pilot. I did not see any applications pertaining to the L1200, or that included JAVA. Wiating for a response from tech support. It is very disappointing since there is nice, free content inside of the LG program.

Posted by: injaneer

Let us know if you hear anything from LG's tech support. As of right no you CAN NOT download java games using the data cable. The software gives you an error. I think they have the phone locked from receiving Java over the data port. However I have been able to download some using the internet.

I finally got the IR to work with between mt LG L1200 and my HP OmniBook 6000 running LG Contents Bank and LG PC Sync.

Laptop:
HP OmniBook 6000
Windows 2000 SP4

I installed IrCOMM2K-1.2.1 while trying to get BitPim to work but I don't know if it is necessary for LG Contents Bank.

In LG Contents Bank, select [Tool][Option] and set
Mode = Infrared
Setting Port = Virtual IR COM Port (COM4)
Setting Baud = 115200

In Windows, select [Control Panel][Wireless Link][Hardware]
Device: IrDA Fast Infrared Port
Select [Properties][Advanced]
Property: Infrared Transceiver B
Value: Siemens IRMS/T6400

That last one did the trick for me. It had been set to SIR Transceiver. I guess that the IR port can handle two separate comm protocols, one on each channel. I left channel A set at "HP HSDL-2300/3600" which I assume allows HP laptops to talk to each other over IR.

With this set up, I was able to add entries into my cells phone address book directly from my laptop using LG PC Sync.

Also, with Contents Babk, I was able to download wallpaper and ringtones and upload pictures. When I select Java, if the IrDA link is established, I get an error message [Error: CME-3]. The only option in that error dialog box is [OK]. After I click OK everything seem normal. But I haven't tried to DL any Java games. I saw someone else on (I think) this forum state they had problems with loading Java games and had to take the phones battery out and put it back in to recover. Maybe it was mp3 ringtones they were talking about. I'm not sure. But anyway, since I'll never play any of the Java games, I'm not gonna screw around with it.

I hope this helps.

The runaround is complete; just got reply from LG tech support:

"Thank you for inquiring of LG Electronics. Your e-mail has been received. The contents bank software is not supported. The only part of the software that is supported is the PCSync. It will work for the transfer of phonebook entries and schedule info. For further assistance with your request, you will need to contact your service provider. Feel free to contact us in the future if you have any additional questions or concerns. Thank you again for contacting LG Electronics."

Cingular says Contents Bank will not support JAVA thru L1200 and suggests "Data Pilot", which does not show any JAVA applications/support on their site www.susteen.com , LG says contact your provider.

When you guys refer to tones are you referring to large mp3 tones or small polyphonic tones? I was looking for a software to pass mp3 tones through a data cable (I don't own a lap top) and BitPim and QPST was suggested to me. I've heard that BitPim doesn't work. Any idea about the other? Here's my post.

Hi guys!

Not sure if this is too old school,
But I'm interested in using my cell phone as a modem,
To call my ISP.
I'm not interested in using Cingular as my ISP.
(That would be the easy but expensive way...)

When I had my Siemens S45 running,
I had it set up to communicate (albeit sporadically)
From my Palm III or Laptop via IR.
(Ya, sounds cook, except when you try to get them running in the car and there isn't enough leg room to keep line of sight working!)

So, this time, hardwire; I have the Serial connection cable. Not hi-tech, but functional.

I'm trying to dial the ISP, but getting an immediate disconnect. Supp, I have data switching service on the phone. I remember from the Palm (can't find the docs) that I had to use a connect string like AT+CHSM Something Something Something.... to initialize the phone to the proper service...

So, I'm stuck... Any simple solutions???

eddie878

bitpim was written for and directed at CDMA phones using BREW ( verizon , telus etc..)

QPST is actually qualcom software that will access most CDMA phones regardless of who is the service provider..

but i don't belive either one will work on GSM / java phones

FYI : maybe this tip will help you

bitpim supports an 'overwrite ' function for files

that allows CDMA users to overwrite any file with the contents from another file

it doesn't change the file name or where it is located..

but has been useful for replacing 'system generated' files that are not supported by uploading..

if LG contents supports such a function..

you could possibly over write some exsisting 'java' apt with one you would prefer to have.

don't blame if something screws up.. I just mention it as 'food for thought'

Posted by: nixie

I got frustrated and called LG tech support - whereupon a very nice gentleman immediately referred me to uk.lge.com (click products, mobile phones - this will take you to WOWLG UK web site - click phones at the top right, 'software and manuals' on the left side of the phones page, and DL the s/w for the LG1100) for sw they have not released here.

So far, this has transferred ring tones and pix perfectly, gave me an error trying to xfer java - connected using a serial (not USB) cable. Recognizes serial and infra, or so it says - but I don't have my infra enabled, so don't know if that's as seamless as this. After fighting with bitpim, etc. etc., this was a total no-brainer - download, run setup, open s/w, be done. Follow the bouncing ball.

Works smoothly with my images when resized to correct size - off to try my tunes.

Good luck, all.

Di

Posted by: eddie878

Let me get this straight. You connectred your L1200 with a serial cable (mini printer pronged one) and transfered pics so far but not mp3 ring tones?

Where'd you find the cable? ebay?

Posted by: simnmel

USB cable off eBay worked right away with drivers. JAVA is not supported via Contents Bank/cable according to LG tech support.

Posted by: eddie878

So the software recognizes USB cables?

Posted by: nixie

I got my serial cable at the same Cingular booth where I got my phone. It has the same d-connect used by the power/charger, plugs into the phone just like the USB one - and has a 9-pin D port on the other end (traditional, old-style small serial port).

In either case, it recognizes as an external modem device - and the s/w connects to COM port - which the 'external modem' is....

Hope that helps makes sense of what I did...

Yeah I understand the cable. I'm trying to find one online. How much was yours? What's the exact name of it so that I can google it. I'm having problems finding it.

Did you get mp3's over to the phone?

I bought this cable and it works fine on W2K sp4. I haven't tried it on XP yet.

Just make sure you LOAD the driver BEFORE you connect the cable. This USB cable emulates a serial connection.

Good Luck

It doesn't say it works for the L1200 down at the bottom where it says the compatibility. I know the one that is $9.99 they say it works.

Can you transfer mp3 tones and play on the phone?

That cable definitely works for the L1200. It is the one I use. But I cannot figure out how to get LG Contents Bank to recognize mp3 files, so I cannot test mp3 tones. But, that should have nothing to do with the cable.

If you tell me how to get mp3 tones to be recognized by LG Contents Bank, I'll test it.

My cable was Cingular branded - I am at work right now, but will check the packaging when I get home and post the specifics. Sounds like the same one Joe is using (not specifically guaranteed for LG1200, but definitely works with it).

Mine did not come with a driver - I had to download Cingular's (annoying!) software from their web site, and the driver was incl with that. But once I uninstalled their s/w, the 'external modem' remained, so when I installed the LG s/w it connected up beautifully.

I have not figured out their file format yet - they use a custom extension, and CakeWalk and SoundForge don't seem to recognize their file format. If anyone figures out what they are doing, please share - I too have not yet figured out how to get it to recognize my mp3s. There is some specific thing to it - just changing extensions to match is not enough to make their app 'see' the file..

Posted by: eddie878

Okay so the good news is that you guys found the cable that works for sure. The software might work but you have trouble getting mp3's identified. In another post they were using CDEX to convert mp3's to WAV. Then cutting the WAV to the fragmented mp3 (for example: first 20 seconds to a song). Then reconverting the trimmed WAV to mp3. Here's a link in another board on how that was done. Go to the first post.

howardforums.comshowthre...88&goto=newpost

Someone try this please. You can use Mp3 power cutter aka sound cutter to trim the mp3's.

Instructions for connecting LG GSM phones via IR

This works perfectly for my L1400, and I assume it will also work for L1200 or any LG GSM phone. I get best results keeping the IR port on the phone about 1" from the IR port on my laptop.

1. Download IRCOMM2K from http://www.stud.uni-hannover.de/~ki...k-1.2.1-eng.zip
2. Install IRCOMM2K. Use a free COM port. I used COM5 and it works fine.
3. Download LGGSM (11.4 Mb) from http://uk.wowlg.com/common/proc_dow.../L1100_UK_1.zip
4. Install LGGSM.
5. Use PC Sync for phonebook, calendar, and memo.
6. In PC Sync under options set the COM port for the one you set up with IRCOMM2K; Under options, leave "enable IRComm" unchecked (yes it doesn't make sense).
7. Use LG Contents Bank to transfer ring tunes (mmf format only), images, java (note I haven't tried java), and camera images.
8. Under Tool->Option set the radio box for Infrared and select the port you set up with IRCOMM2K.
9. Use connect and everything works.

My only frustration is that images for the phonebook and sub-display (front LCD on L1400) can are only recognized if they are taken by the phone camera. Wallpaper images can be downloaded to the phone with no problem. If anyone knows a work-around I would appreciate it.

Eddie878:
My cable is Cingular packaged, but it doens't look like anything else is custom - packaging states "Data Cable for LG Handset compatible with 4010 4050" - so am guessing that any commercial cable that is branded for 4010 or 4050 should work for you.

All:
But I still can't get the LG GSM s/w to recognize a tune, wav mp3 or otherwise. Bitpim does not want to recognize my phone (or perhaps just my connection via a non-USB device?), can't find QPST and the whole reason I started this little odyssey was to get a custom ringtone. Anyone have any good thoughts? Or tech spec on the mmf file format (since GSM actually talks to my phone, it'd be nice to just be able to use their s/w for htis...)

Di

Posted by: eddie878

nixie: Use the software that I recommended to get the mp3 chopped to a ringtone and try the UK software. It might work. Bitpim and QPST have already been verified to not work.

Posted by: lsherris

LG does not recognize wav or mp3 format ringtones. They seem to only work with mmf format. You need a program like Mobile Music Polyphonic to convert wav or mp3 into mmf format.

The real problem is that LG does not allow large files to be downloaded. You can only download a few seconds worth of music. One work around is to convert to midi and then to mmf. When I do this the quality is completely unaccepable. Does anyone know a better way to get good music into the pnone?

Lowell

Posted by: nixie

I really didn't care for Mobile Music Polyphonc - and was only able to find it and one other commercial program that would do this. HOwever, Yamaha has freeware that does it just fine.

http://smaf-yamaha.com/tools/downloads.html

Apparently, mmf is just a variant of SMAF. Their wscma2u.exe worked like a charm. It is a drag-drop converter - wants a .wav file and converts file.wav to file.mmf in the same directory. i found a .wav of 880k or less converts beautifully to an mmf of 20K or less that will fit on the phone.

Length is pretty restricted by that file size, and I did not notice that starting with a lower-quality wav file resulted in any additional length - for example, if I had a wav that was 20 sec at 16/stereo, and could only get 10 secs of it into a 20k mmf, reducing it to 8/mono still resulted in 10 secs of time at a 20k mmf after conversion. The smaf file format seems pretty streamlined....

My phone is now happily playing Trek communicator sounds, The Tick, Black Adder, and - of course, the reason for this quest initially - my husband's phone now plays stuff related to his favorite NFL Team.

Mission Accomplished.

Thanks for the help gang!

Di

Posted by: eddie878

Sweet. So if I chop the .wav first, then convert to .mmf using that program, I can then pass it with the UK program to the phone with better-than-polyphonic quality?

Posted by: nixie

I don't know about "better than polyphonic" - better than what I was getting out of the Mobile Music Polyphonic s/w at any rate - which could be user error, as I was not getting the warm & fuzzy from that app <g>. But certainly I am getting reasonable quality - s'pose it is 'in the eye of the beholder' - but certainly worth giving a try.

It is a small download, an incredibly easy app, and takes about 5 seconds to decide how the result compares to what you are doing in MMP or S-Forge... Definitely wort giving it a go, and since I have not done a ton of successful work for this in other apps, I'll be interested in your comparison of the quality you are getting - so go try it, and post back here, 'k? :-)

I want another opinion before I go buy a cable. This should be a sticky though:

LG L1200 method of getting mp3 tones.

In my opinion, mmf sound better.

Posted by: nixie

As for mmf, in and of itself, sounding better - seems to me that they have stripped the file down as far as possible (rather like converting images to jpg for smallest file size) - and that it should be a lower-quality sound, overall. (or maybe it's just the speaker on my LG1200? <g>)

As a separate question, would be curious to know if Eddie878 has different results than I do - not necessarily with the MMF file itself, but with the process of getting there. Basically, since MMF apparently strips out all but essential data, does it matter what quality of file you start with?

Obviously, a really file sound file with lots of static would carry that as "sound" and the difference woudl show - but if you start with an 8Mhz .wav file, and a 44 Mhz wav file (otherwise identical) would your MMFs look any different. From there, of course next question is, if you start with mp3 rather than wav (56Mhz aren't they?), would you get a better MMF than from the 44Mhz wav?

I kind of thought that's where your question was coming from Eddie...? If so - am really curious to see wht results you got, and whether the quality of the origin file format creates any difference in the final MMF product. I am not seeing it - but then, I am one of those people whose stereo speakers have to make buzzing noises before I notice they are not right <g>.

Anyone?

Di

Posted by: eddie878

I ordered my cable on Friday and apparently there is a problem with my order so I don't expect until next week. I will test the program that was found. I have over the last few weeks d/led some wav cropping programs, conversion programs, and the mmf conversion program. We shall see the results.

Posted by: eddie878

Okay I got the cable finally. I forgot how to do all this. Give me some time.

Posted by: vila

i get everything to work in my LG contents bank.. but when i go to the java section and try to connect ( to download the games already there) i keep getting

ERROR: CME - 3

Posted by: nixie

Yup - it will not xfer java content. Period.

Di

Posted by: SliderX

I just convert midi ring tones to mmf. It's not mp3 but it sounds decent. They're only 2kb-4kb for a 30 sec ringtone. I wish there was a way to transfer so I could transfer 30 second voice quality ringtones that are 20+kb. I don't want to have a 10 second ringtone.

I do this because there's a ton of midi ringtones to choose from.

Dang it. I can't get the LG software to recognize my phone. I'm doing it via USB but the drivers don't seem to work. Did you guys get them off the CD because from what I've read it's useless and it couldn't find drivers anyways.

I finally used my USB data cable to upload pictures. Thanks to joe and a number of other people. I spent about 5hrs on the internet searching for to make the PC recognoze my phone. The LG content bank works really good. I tried using the infrared connection but it didnt work for me. Well...i dont really need it sonce the USB cable works fine. Hi all,
I got my USB cable, I've installed the LG L1100 GSM software and a PL-2303 USB-Serial Driver, that came along with the CD.

But when I connect my L1200 to Windows XP, it does not recognize the phone. When I open LG Contents Bank, under Options, the "port" option does not show me anything, and when I click connect it says:
"Other application used this port. Cannot open %d port".

I should see an available COM port under Options, right ?
