Brewsky 8900 - Easy to use ring tone/wallpaper manager for Audiovox 8900

All my preloaded ringers (the ones that come with the phone under 'Music Bells' have disappeared after putting buddyholly on. Also, the one legit ringer I downloaded from Telus no longer works... It still appears on the phone and through BitPim, but it plays as buddyholly...

Is this normal for all the original ringers to disappear? I can't find them on the file system tree, but I don't know if they ever were in the tree.

Can someone help me?

Thanks.

That is not normal. AFAIK, Brewsky doesn't do anything with the original ringtones. I've used the RS cable #19, futuredial drivers and Brewsky without any problems at all. Both ringtones and wallpaper work fine.
Telus ringtone plays Buddy Holly??? You didn't happen to re-name
the file prior to uploading? Some strange things are happening with your phone. Are you sure you followed all of the instructions in these posts to the letter?

I didn't think that was normal... Correct me if I'm wrong, but default_snd.txt seems to be the file associated with the 'Music Bells' ringtones because I have reason to believe I have mistakenly overwritten this file with my backed up download_snd.txt. If you or someone could post or send me the original default_snd.txt that would be awsome!

Yes, Buddyholly.mp3 worked fine on my Telus phone without having to change the extention to .mid.

Thank you for any help.

I had that problem the first time as well. If you do not see any of your existing ring tones in the right column of brewsky. then when you add tones from the left side, and hit upload, you will have only the ones you uploaded. the others will not show up, but they are taking up space. This is what I do.

I first open bitpim and go see my ring tones.
I then delete all of them using the bitpim program.

Then I close bitpim, and open Brewsky.
Now I add the new ring tones I want to the right column, (including the ones I had and wanted to keep) Now I upload them and there all there.

You have to put all your ring tones in the Brewsky/ring tones directory first using windows explorer..ect. This way they will show up in the list when you open brewsky.

Also when naming your ring tone files, you must not have any spaces.. example ACDCbackinBlack.mp3 If you want spaces, use the _ character example,,, ACDC_back_in_Black.mp3
Good luck

Yeah, I got that upload/delete custom ringtones figured out no problem...

I am talking about the built-in/stock/default, whatever you want to call them, ringtones. The oringinal ones that come preloaded on your phone. I can't find them through BitPim and I don't think they would ever show in Brewsky cuz they're probably located in a completely different directory than the downloaded/custom ringtones get uploaded to.

These ringtones are built into my phone, and I'm not looking to delete them. I just want my phone to be able to 'see' them again. THESE ARE NOT CUSTOM RINGERS THAT I CAN SIMPLY OVERWRITE, NOR DELETE THROUGH BITPIM.

Would someone be so kind as to send a default_snd.txt (not download_snd.txt) to me? c_heine(at)hotmail.com. I believe this will help me.

Thanks

When you first ran bitpim, did you do the complete backup
that is recommended? It didn't work on my phone but apparently it works on others. If you did, I would guess you could restore everything back to normal. Since it didn't work for me, I don't know how to restore, but I would think someone else here would.

Did you put Buddy Holly on your phone with bitpim or Brewsky?

Buddyholly was put on with Brewsky and works. I didn't do a backup with BitPim because I didn't intend on using it for anything else other than browsing the file system.

Please, please, please someone post or mail me default_snd.txt to c_heine(at)hotmail.com. I am confident I can resolve this with that single file.

I think Brewsky's great and love what it can do. I've got that figured out. I just want to fix my small screwup.

Thank you.

LOL, I did the same thing you did wakar, and yes.. you can probably solve your problem with default_snd.txt.

But sorry I can't help you out in this regard, as I absent-mindedly overwrote that one with another garbled file.

All the best.

I used bitpim to save default_snd.txt to disk.
Then I looked at it with Notepad, and it looks
like garbage to me. However, I've never messed
with it so I guess that must be how it is.

I don't know if what you are going to do will
work or make things worse.

Anyway, check your e-mail and good luck.

Made things worse, but thanks for your help anyways. Apparently that file did have to be form a Telus phone. Going to the dealer tomorrow.

I had to try. Oh well.

I had trouble as well, but finally got it to work after I changed my wallpaper (located in Media Gallery). I have I idea why this worked afterwards, but I'm able to backup now.

Try deleting anything uploaded by BREWSKY and see if you can backup.

You've got two options.

The Radio Shack FutureDial part numbers for the USB cables are:

Audiovox CXDMA8900 - 17-760
LG VX6000 - 17-792

I don't not know why they are listed as separate parts #'s, but I would be willing to bet they have the same specs. And they will order from their main distribution center if not in stock and have it drop-shipped to you for free within 1-2 business days.

I just got my cable, connected to Bresky and tried to remove the Verizon banner from the Sub LCD screen. After making the selection from the menu, my phone wants to re-boot. When the phone restarts, nothing has changed. Does anybody know what the problem may be?

If you are talking about the ERI Banner, I think that only applies to changing connect modes such as roaming or home network.

I am hopefully anticipating that there will be an update to manage some of the directory files that are not part of the firmware. I cannot get BitPim to do anything but backup single root directories folders and sub-folders at a time.

-------------

I would also like to know how to enable WAP (Web) mode, as Cricket does not offer it as of yet in my area... although I hear they are market testing in some areas, as well as supposed to have a roaming contract with Cingular by the end of the year!

I'm hoping there is a way to toggle the firmware to enable WAP using the given IP's being tossed around here.

_________

Also... Does "Wireless Address" in the phone book, refer to an IP#, or to another email address or cell number? What is the format?

Posted by: tbz

the problem I am having I believe is a Verizon ERI banner problem. I'm still looking for a solution.

On my Verizon 8900 phone, Brewsky removed my verizon flashing every 5 seconds banner... It's probably the best mod I ever made to this phone. That Banner was the most anoing thing about the phone

Re-download the program, but when the download box opens, select save instead of open. then go to that folder you saved it to, and install it from there.

You might want to check your permissions and make sure you have room on your hard drive to install. it has to unpack it to a temporary directory before installing. If you use winrar, you may be able to extract it to somewhere else before installing.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you don't have permission to install applications on your system. Are you trying to install this on a work computer perhaps?

Well then you should check to see that c:\windows\temp exists, and if it does not, create it.

It seems strange that you woundn't be able to overwrite a file or directory on your system. You might also want to reboot in case there's a previous version of the installer still running in memory. That would create a condition where the directory was read only if the files in it were in still in use by a hung process.

Good luck

Z...

ok i got winrar now but dose the file have to be zip'd? when i dl it for me to use winrar?

Posted by: newbee

If the problem is lack of room in the temp file, how do i deleat old temp files safely?

thanks i know im a pain in the butt.

Posted by: Devileyezz

lol, awww... we're all pains in the butt when we're new.

Easy way: Select All -> Delete
Hard way: Open IE -> Alt+T -> Up arrow -> Enter.

Then a window opens. On that, look for "Delete files" and it'll do it. (It's considered a 'safe' way.)

Would there be any way to make this program for the 8920? I tried using COM3:Verizon to connect and it connects. When I go to "Get Camera Pics", it gets a list of them but when I download one, the progress bar freezes at random times. When I did download one, the picture wouldn't open.

8920 doesn't have the file called download_snd.txt so it doesn't list the ringtones/wallpapers. I tried uploading a wallpaper, with success but I can't view it on my phone (as in I don't know where it uploaded to). I can't upload ringtones though.

Posted by: georgi55

Hi, after spending hours and hours I'm still unable to upload/download,
BUT I can reboot the phone through the menu on Brewsky.
I can succesfuly connect with BitPim and vew the tree, but with Brewsky
I can never get any data transfer done, only a reboot. I tried connecting
with BitPim 1sr then with Brewsky right after that but I still get same thing.

I have the SnapSync VX6000 cable with serial thing in middle.

Try plugging it in when the flip is closed.
And about the port open thing, TRY connecting it with BitPim first, and then try Brewsky.

Posted by: moogi

Hi,

Just recently discovered Brewsky. It's a very neat program.

My problem is that I do not see the uploaded wallpapers on my phone. I think the problem is that the index file on the phone does not get update by Brewsky (although there's no problem with updaing the ringtone index). Does anyone have any suggestion on how to fix this problem for a vox 8900 phone on Telus?

The other question is that everytime i finished uploading the wallpapers, Brewsky tells me to "Enter the BREW" menu in order for the pictures to show up. How can I do that on a vox 8900 phone for Telus phone?

Thanks!

on the Audiovox 8900, you must press the navigation "Down" cursor key. On some carriers it is called "Get New" instead of "Brew".

If you see the manual, it clearly tells you how to enter the Brew function... that's the key below (OK) and above (Back) or you can select Menu (··), (Brew or Get New) #4 on my phone.

see: http://www.audiovox.com/manuals/own...M8900-telus.pdf (PAGE 26)

Posted by: moogi

Ok, so I pressed the down arror. It took me to the "Do More" menu. I have 6 options in there: Wireless Web, Sounds, Images, Games, Tools and Free Memory. Which one should I choose? I still don't see the pictures that I've uploaded in the wallpaper section.

Also, page 26 of the attached pdf manual shows how to make a 911 phone calls. It doesn't tell me how to enter the 'brew' menu!

Thanks!

Anyway, the concept is to fool the phone into believing that you have downloaded a ringtone or wallpaper from a vendor...

Apparently, the 8900 has approx 25 different menu variations, depending on the carrier and revision number, and you need to find the one that takes you to the BREW or GET NEW...

I am guessing based on what you are trying to do, and the Menu options you provided, try selecting Images.

If that doesn't work refer to your manual regarding downloading graphics, and you need only to go to the opening menu section of BREW or whatever your carrier calls it's download function.

Anyone else with a Telus familiar with the steps to get to the BREW function?

BTW, when I opened the PDF, it said 26/50 at the bottom, so I assumed it was page 26... maybe section or chapter 26, or whatever. sorry!

Also, have you rebooted the phone to see if that does anything?

I'm trying to put music from my cd's onto my phone as ringtones. Does anyone know how to do this and/or what programs to use? I used brewsky and buddyholly works fine but every time I try to use 123 Advanced mp3 cutter it downloads to my phone but won't play. Does anyone know of an easy mp3 cutter that works and how to put the ringtones on brewsky? I have Verizon and Brewsky works great. It got the Verizon logos off my phone. Posted by: canucklehead

yo kevin, the same thing has happened to me as well as several other users of brewsky 8900...primarily after uploading the buddy holly ringtone that comes with the program. if you surf back through this thread you'll find more info about tweaks to the .ini file that prevent the "user restore" error from happening in the first place. unfortunetly though, once the phone crashes there is nothing you can do about it except go back to the dealer and have them flash the phone with new software. my 8900 has been out with telus service for almost 6 weeks now. better luck with your service provider.

Some people have had some success breaking out of that loop by randomly closing, then opening the phone, and pressing the "End" button.

-shrug-

If that doesn't work then it's back to the dealer for you. I hope you're within your 30 day exchange period.

I dont know if its worth all the trouble to upgrade the phone when i know how to do everything with my phone (with the exception of getting animations on the phone) and have it all setup the way i like already

does anybody know anything about the 8910 or 9900?

This is not true for everyone...
#1 I use .mp3 files. They work just fine.
#2 They don't *have* to be under 30 seconds, but the phone won't play a ringtone for very long. Mine plays about 20 seconds.
#3 My daughter loaded a half meg mp3 and it played just fine. But... what a huge waste of space!

BTW, I have heard of some difficulties using the CURITEL drivers with (LG cable and 8900 handset)

If neither of the drivers I posted work, I'll post the DataPilot (Susteen) driver I use, even though the DataPilot program does not work with the 8900 (but the usb driver works with Brewsky and limited functions with BitPIM 0.62

Ring tones, Get Camera Pics, and Wallpapers are working!

Put your ringtones in: C:\Program Files\Brewsky 8900\RingTones\
Put your wallpapers in: C:\Program Files\Brewsky 8900\Wallpapers\

Also, I have added menu tools to easily patch the Verizon Wireless ERI Banner.

This was developed for a Verizon Wireless 8900, but I have added support hopefully for the others, including cellular south, telus and cricket. testing of those phones will be needed. please do so at your own risk.

Think of Brewsky8900 as a limited FTP program.... In a FTP program you need to have source and destination directories to upload and download files.

With Brewsky8900 and the Audiovox 8900 handset they are static:

Brewsky8900: (your computer)
C:\Program Files\Brewsky8900\Ringtones and

Audiovox 8900: (phone volume directory)
Verizon: /user/sound/ringer
Cricket: /user/sound/ringer/
Telus::: /ur/sn/rng

So, in simple terms, it means to copy any ringtones into the (buffer) area C:\Program Files\Brewsky8900\Ringtones for upload.

PUT your graphics into: C:\Program Files\Brewsky8900\Wallpapers
and upload to: /brew/shared/images

Camera pics at: /camera/photo on the handset are downloaded to: C:\Program Files\Brewsky8900\My Pictures

Here are some ringtones for you to try:
http://www.packcat.org/audiovox8900/ringtones

more midi songs: http://www.packcat.org/midi (they are full songs)

In general, the maximum duration of an Audiovox8900 ringtone is 20 seconds. Anything more is a waste of space. I assume they need not be stereo as there is only one speaker. Acceptable Formats are (.mid, .mp3) and other formats may be available as well. If you search the net, you can find plenty of sites, or simply roll your own.

Graphic Wallpapers - (.jpg, .png) and others
Camera pics are always (.jpg)

----

Now, I have a request!
I'd like to know the handset directory for animation files, and if anyone has a seed file.

WHEN all else fails, TRY adjusting the volume on your speakerphone!!! And it may be a good idea to play the file on your PC to make sure it works. Some songs will not play on the phone, probably really intensive ones.... For me, Supertramp, Bloody Well Right just would not play properly on the phone. Start with some simple generic midi files, like the ringtones you can download for free.

I WISH people will please start declaring their phone, carrier, and software before whining about what doesn't work. Then anyone with an inkling of an idea will be able to guestimate a response.

So I have ordered the Audiovox 9900 and of course the price is making the order take forever to go through....of well. My question is does BREWSKY for the 8900 work for this new model as well? Any replies will help thank you!

My initial guess would be no, since the 9000 series Audiovox handsets are made by Toshiba, whereas the 8000 series handsets are made by Curitel.

I have Brewsky 8900 installed on 2 computers but can't get it to connect to my phone. I have the cable with the Curitel drivers. TI try to connect with com 6, I get a Port Open message at the bottom of the screen but when I try any functions the progress bar just sits there and nothing happens. I have used PcSync and connect to the phone with no problems but there is no ringtone feature. What do I need to do to get Brewsky to work?

If you look very closely, Brewky works with Verizon, Cricket, and Telus....

Try using the standard USB outputs on the back of a PC.. Mine uses standard Port (4)... if you have a bunch of stuff connected to more than just the standard USB ports coming out of different places on your PC or USB Hubs, then you may be running into problems tracking down the correct Port#. take everything off and just use the built-in USB port. Also, you can probably disable (RS-232 serial) COM Ports in your CMOS, since very few modern devices even use those anymore and they only waste interrupts.

If you can't hear the ringtone then it's likely encoded incorrectly. Make sure the encoding of the mp3 is the same as the sample buddyholly ringtone in order for it to work.

I've been using brewsky for a while now with my Verizon 8900 and I can upload ringtones fine and download pictures. The problem is with wallpapers. I can upload wallpapers to the phone and they show up in the 'cell phone' side of Brewsky. I can also see teh uploaded files in BitPim under the brew\shared\images directorym but they do not show up in the phone. I have entered the 'Get It Now' menu and also tried rebooting the phone but they still will not show up in the phone. I've also tried uploading both .jpg and .png files and neither will show up on the phone.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

I think I may have the fix for all the people who are having a hard time getting .MP3 files to work as ringtones on their CDM8900!

First, my setup:

Audiovox CDM8900 (Verizon)
CDM8900 USB Cable from eBay
Curitel USB Drivers
BitPIM .62
Brewsky 8900
GoldWave Sound Editor (could use others like Audacity)
Lame MP3 encoder .DLL

I have the same problem many have in that I need to start BitPIM, then Brewsky 8900 to actually have Brewsky 8900 connect to my phone.

When I uploaded the buddyholly.mp3 it worked, but none of the .MP3 files I did would work. I tried saving sub 20 second clips at the same 24bpm bit rate, and none of them would work. Then I noticed what the issue was. The .WAV files I was converting to .MP3 were STEREO 44Khz files, not MONO 22050Mhz files! When re-sampled my .WAV to 22050Mhz MONO, it started to work fine!

So before you convert your files to .MP3 from .WAV, make sure that your .WAV file is MONO 22050Mhz

Hope it works as well for you as it did for me!

I'm not sure what level of detail you're going in to to replicate the wallpaper file that comes with Brewsky, but here's what I did. I opened the L.png file with JASC Paint Shop Pro and got the image information:

128x145 pixels
28 pixels/CM
24/16 million pixel depth/colors.

I took the picture I wanted to use as a wallpaper, cropped it, then resized it to 128x145 pixels, 24 bit color. I took that picture and did the upload with Brewsky, went into Get it Now, exited Get it Now, and it was available as a wallpaper. You will find the wallpaper (on Verizon phones), in the Media Gallery (Menu Option 6), under Images, then Graphics.

Hope this helps,
Tim

Actually, I can't even get the L.png wallpaper file that comes with brewsky to appear on the phone. It uploads in Brewsky and then shows up in the cell phone column but i can not view it on the phone.

Also, if i use BitPim to overwrite an exitsing file in the MMS\OM directory i can get the picture to show up in the graphics section of the media gallery and then use it for wallpaper, but I'd rather use Brewsky to upload tham to eliminate the extra step of creating a file on the phone to overwite witht the one I actually want to use.

Thanks for any other help,
Rob

Any ideas? I got my USB cable today. It's one of the 5 dollar ones off ebay with the box in the line and it came with a cd of the Curitel drivers. I put the cd in, and click the Setup (Preinstall USB Drivers). During this process, I am shown several warnings telling me that this software is not signed by Microsoft and asks me if I want to stop installation or continue anyways. This message pops up about three times. I hit continue anyways every time. Then it sets up, the green bar fills up as everything installs, and it tells me that the install was successful and to restart computer. I do. Then I try to plug in my phone, but it is not recognized. New hardware wizard comes up and asks if I want to search for drivers. I have done this and it just reinstalls them from the cd. I have also tried using the ones on the link in one of these threads with the same results. In device manager under USB controller, Curitel USB composite device has a yellow exclamation next to it. I click on this, and the status tells me that the driver needs to be reinstalled. My phone also shows up under ports as unknown device. When I click on that, it tells me that the device is not conifgured correctly (Code 1) -don't know what that means- and suggests that I reinstall the drivers. This is all on a windows xp gateway laptop. Does anyone know why my computer won't recognize my cdm 8900? What should I do?

Posted by: hawkeyeh

Alright, I've been reading all the posts and trying different things for about a day now. Nothing has changed. I plug th phone in, found new hardware wizard comes up. When it starts to install the drivers, a hardware installation window comes up saying "The software you are installing for this hardware: Curitel USB Composite Device has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP." The window gives the option to stop installation or continue anyway. I continue anyway, and eventually it tells me that the hardware could not be installed and finishes. I have service pack 2. Could that be the problem? Why is it getting hung up on this?

P.S. Sorry about the long posts, but I want to give as much info as possible so maybe someone can figure this out.

BTW- Go Cardinals!

i did something silly that seems to work... i have a verizon phone btw...

i downloaded the offical audiovox picture getting thing, and then i use that to connect and it seems to do nothing. i just leave it there and then open up brewsky and connect to whatever port my phone is on and it seems to work. will this work for you? maybe. worth a try. just search the board for the official audiovox picture program or something like that... its for the 8900 specifically and its not supposed to work with verizon, and it doesnt, but it does let me connect using brewsky... its really weird. works every time though.

I think the major problem people are having is they are trying to connect a phone to Brewsky8900 that uses a carrier other than (Verizon, Cricket, or Telus). And then vent because they can't upload their images or hear the ringtones!

Each carrier uses a different method for storing data on the handset.

For example, with Ringtones:

Brewsky8900: (your computer)
C:\Program Files\Brewsky8900\Ringtones and

Audiovox 8900: (phone volume directory)
Verizon: /user/sound/ringer
Cricket: /user/sound/ringer/
Telus::: /ur/sn/rng
Other carriers may use something even different.

Plus, different firmware versions may cause even further confusion. I believe most of the complaints have been that people see their ringtones but cannot hear them. This may be because there are 2 components to files on the phone:
BTW, if anyone knows of an editor that can work with the text files (probably btrieve or something exotic), the phone book is located at: /nvm/phbk/phonebook

Using Bitpim, you can view all of the files and information listed above.

Since my thread is getting no responces, I will post in this thread.

I can upload the MP3 ringtones to my phone. I can listen to them. Under Menu 6-3, The ringtones have a red X on them. When I set the mp3's to the ringer, when someone calls it plays hte default ringer and not my mp3. I don't understand how I can sample the mp3 on hte phone but not make it play when someone calls.

Posted by: jivemastert

it depends on how big the file is. the phone has to load the file before it can play it. i have my phone set to ring and vibe and it vibrates once or twice before it starts playing the mp3 file. you might wanna try changing the extension on the mp3 to midi. might help. other than that, i would just cut down the size of the mp3 so it starts sooner...

Posted by: kevlo911

It never starts to play when I set it as teh ringer. It plays my old telephone style ringer, even though hte mp3 ringer is selected. I have tried to rename at a mid file and upload it and still no go.

Posted by: hawkeyeh

Thought I was just a newbie, but apparently I'm also an idiot because I absolutely cannot get my Curitel drivers to work Been working at it for days and am very frustrated. Brewsky won't connect because my computer won't even recognize my phone is plugged in. I have searched and nothing helps. Please, you mobile gods, how about some divine intervention? I'm out of ideas.

Posted by: Dominus

I use MetroPCS and the 8900 and FYI it accepts mp3 files. I did not need to create a .mid file.

And be warned! I tried to be lazy at first, renaming wav files to midi. This works in windows but a renamed wav file will not play on the phone.

Anybody else having this problem? Used Brewski to upload backgrounds and replace the banner. This is the way to go; so easy. Would like to upload my pictures that I downloaded from my phone before getting a replacement (the 4th!). Any ideas? On uploading and the turn-on problem? By the way, I always leave my phone on for emergency calls from family members.

Hey DrifterMaximus, I think I have the same problem you do. When you installed the Curitel drivers did the installation fail for some reason cause that's what happened to me. It happens every time I try to install them. I don't know what to do. Let me know how the Susteen drivers work out.

Posted by: hawkeyeh

Whew, here comes a long post. I'm gonna try to explain exactly what happens when my Curitel installation fails. I insert cd and run setup. It tells me that installation was successful. Then I plug my phone in. Found new hardware wizard pops up for Curitel USB Composite Device. It asks if I would like Windows Update to search for software. I click no. Then I can choose Install software auto (recommended) or Install from list or specific location (advanced). I choose the latter. I tell it to search for the best driver in C:\Program Files\CURITEL\Curitel Packet Service. The wizard tries to install. Then it says "There was a problem installing: Curitel USB Composite Device . . . The system file cannot be specified." I click Finish. Wizard closes and immediately Found New Hardware Wizard pops up again, this time for Curitel Packet Service. I go through the same process as above for this. When installing, a Modem Setup window opens saying "Windows was unable to install the modem." Of Ok or Cancel, I click Ok. Then it tells me "Problem installing this hardware: Curitel Packet Service . . . System file cannot be specified." I click Finish. Again, Found New Hardware Wizard pops up, this time for Curitel Packet Service Diagnostic Serial Port (WDM). I go through the same process as above, and it again fails. Found New Hardware Wizard will continue to pop up until I cancel it.

Here is something else. Twice during this process, an RTL window popped up saying "Unable to start driver fo HPHipm11.exe (HPHipm11.exe)." I click Ok. I have an HP Photosmart 7350 printer. Could there be some kind of conflict between the Curitel and HP software?

By your own logic I guess you aren't using any version of bitpim on your 8900, since the author of the program says:

"The internal software in this phone is far too fragile and shoddy. There is a very real risk of locking up the phone so badly it won't reboot and has to be replaced through trivial operations.

"Consequently this phone is not supported by BitPim and you should not use it with BitPim even if it appears to work. You should not report any issues with this phone and we will not respond to support requests other than by pointing to this page."

You are COMPLETELY wrong on this point. 0.62 has some major issues with it. The main one that comes to mind is the fact that it cannot properly handle files under 256 bytes, and will pad the file with random bytes from memory if it is smaller.

The only reason BitPim "does not support" the 8900 is the author toasted a couple handsets while working on the phonebook handling code. He deemed the phone to fragile to work on in frustration. That's his perogative, however, the filesystem view, which is what we're all using, continues to work in the 0.7x versions. Furthermore, there have been a number of bug fixes like the one previously mentioned. These fixes significantly increase your chances of not turning your handset into a brick.

It's great that you want to help the community, but please stop spreading disinformation.

I can't get it to work anyway, maybe it has something to do with Metro PCS. I can see some file information but that's about it, can't download download_snd.txt or anything else.

That is the word that has been handed down since the beginning of this thread. You are free to do whatever you like, but that is what the more techno-savy users have said for a while now. All I am saying, to combine both of our logics, is: that software for the 8900 is iffy at best. I stand by what I said, as it was intended for new users.

Well, this thread is about Brewsky, and there's not much mention of BitPim until the 10th page or so, and that's mostly in reference to trick for getting Brewsky to connect to the phone...

I've been hacking the 8900 since last November when it was released by Telus Mobility. I've released an application to allow Telus users to modify their index files in order to upload images, and ringtones. Futhermore, I was one of the first Telus users to deploy my own J2ME apps on the handset. (The Telus version of the 8900 runs J2ME not BREW) I feel that I am one of those more "techno-savvy" users that you are talking about.

Feel free to use 0.62 if you like. Just be warned that when downloading files that are less than 256 bytes, like many of the index files are before they have a few records in them, you will be getting garbage memory from the heap tacked on the end of your file. If you are unaware that this garbage is being added and you do not remove it you will likely lock up the handset. Honestly, new users are MUCH better off using a newer version since it will decrease their chances of bricking their handset.

The 8900 is exremely stable if treated with care. But in order to do that you need to be using the appropriate tools. BitPim 0.62 is not the appropriate tool.

Just my 2 cents

0.7.20 causes an exception error on my computer and some of the other versions since 0.7.16 do as well. Everyone should use whatever version works best for them. Brewsky is Great! ...BUT... there hasn't been an update since it was first posted here and only some functions work for various users.

I was trying to be helpful in repeating what was posted earlier. If you want to get anal and hostile with me, I suggest you keep it outside this thread and keep this area as clean and pleasant as possible... If you got a shade problem, then all I can suggest is you stick it where the sun don't shine and keep your attitude and insideous remarks to yourself please. There is no room for ego here and no points for one-upmanship. please refer future disagreements outside this thread! (P.S. that was the nice version)

LOL, well I think we've both taken some comments the wrong way. I took offence to the suggestion that I wasn't techno-savy, since I'm a software developer by trade. If I came across as hostile I apologize. The only reason I took that tack is that version .62 can do some REAL damage to a users handset if they don't know what they're doing. From watching, and commenting on these forums for over a year I've seen how disinformation can cause trouble and I hoped to nip this in the bud before people bricked their handsets.

Please understand that I'm not disagreeing with you personally, but with your repeated assertion that .62 is the way to go. You are right that it works, but I suggest you try to download a small file from your handset and see for yourself what I am describing.

Anyway, we'll agree to disagree. I'm sure that I've made my message clear to anyone that happens to be reading this thread.

Take it easy.

Thanks for re-posing your statement. Since the beginning of whenever, I believe 'CID' or whoever stated that 0.62 was the way to go. "IF" for some reason, a later version works better with 8900, that is great news. My understanding from previous posts was that the opposite was true, the newer versions had more potential for hazard to the handset. Personally, I only use it to make backups of the handset directories. I would not recommend uploading the popular ring tones or graphics to it as they require updating of the indexes, but I was successful in uploading and replacing the 3rd camera sound (silence).

But I think all of this raises serious issues... like if the 8900's are so flakey in the first place, why doesn't Audiovox recall all of them.. Come to think of it, I think there WERE serious problems with the first 2 batches of 8900's and some were replaced in the beginning, but Audiovox claims to have fixed that problem. From your comments, you seem to indicate that maybe the 8900 "may" be more sophisticated or different than other models, and most software developers may not be that interested in persuing a model that does not fit the cookie-cut pattern of more common models.

Zaediex is a great guy, without him much of the 8900 scene wouldn't exist.. and no i am not exaggerating..

btw z, i sold my 8900.. im on rogers now and on a gx32!!! anyways, i backed up my entire phone before letting it go.. i'll send you my zip directory with like 14 games.. some real good ones too!!

get a gx32,dude.. u'll love it - the vox was just the beginning!

Part 1.

First, if you have BitPim installed, you'll need to check the phone directories for your ringtones:The list of files in the user ringtone directory and the contents of the database (db) file download_snd.txt should match up either alphabetically or according to order of download date.

First make sure you can find the 2 references listed above somewhere in your phone directories.

In the past, users would have to pay the carrier extortion fee to download a web-based ringtone (*seed file) to force creation of the directories and indexes. If you have one of the 3 chosen carriers, or clones of, that Brewsky supports, it should do this automatically for you. If you cannot determine where the ringtone download directory and database index file, you may have to pay the Brew fee to download one to your phone and auto-magically create the seed files. (usually the first one may be free, and there are some free ringtone download sites)

BTW, the db index file (/db/download_snd.txt) should look similar to the following
Code:
t Alan Parsons Lucifer.mid @ ÀZd Dß XÔ @‡ ÿÿ u Alf.mid sons Lucifer.mid @ ÀZd Dß XÔ @‡ ÿÿ v Aqua Barbie Girl.mid mid @ ÀZd Dß XÔ @‡ ÿÿ

You need to purchase a USB data cable. (approx $22-$49) seen as low as $3 on eBay... (but be very careful) I'm using the Data Pilot Susteen universal kit from Best Buy. It retails for $79, I paid $44, but I can connect to almost every brand cell phone handset with a serial connector on the bottom. (comes with 2 USB A-side connectors and 4 Serial B-side connectors. 8900 uses the "Camel" B-side connector or LG-2 cable)

The part numbers are variously listed as:
DICU8400
AUD05U
PDL8900B
MOK8400
CELLEBRITE Audiovox, Kyocera, LG Cable #48 for UME-12 (part #491693)

Other phone models that are supposed to use the same cable are: Audiovox 8410 , 8400, 8450, 8900, 8910 // LG CDMA 4600, VX6000, VX 4500, 4400, 1200,4050, 4010, 5550, 5450 // Kyocera SE47(Slider)

Hey guys, I got my ebay cable and Curitel drivers a week ago but could never get the drivers to even install correctly. I've tried a lot of stuff and nothing worked. At one point I thought the Curitel drivers conflicted with my HP printer software. So I uninstalled the printer drivers. Curitel still didn't install, so I tried to reinstall my HP drivers. However, they would not install either. Apparently something on my computer is (either directly or indirectly) keeping me from installing any kind of drivers. I have had this situation happen once before with my HP drivers. The only thing that got them to finally install correctly was when I formatted my computer. I have Kazaa, and I have to think that then and now, my computer caught something that caused these problems. So, sad to say, I have the whole day off today and will format my computer. I know others in this forum have problems similar to mine so I'll let you know how it works out. Suffice to say, I won't download Kazaa again. If anyone else wants to take this route, I found that www.theeldergeek.com is a great general resource for maintaining you XP machine and http://www.theeldergeek.com/xp_home...l_-_graphic.htm specifically gives a great tutorial for how to format your XP computer. Gotta go for now. I've got about five or six exciting hours ahead of me, lol. I let you all know how it works out.

Posted by: Devileyezz

Just use Kazaa Lite or Ares man.

Get rid of that silly spyware infested and god-knows-what-else Kazaa.

All the best!

Posted by: Dominus

I recommend www.shareaza.com.

There are a lot of freeware and shareware programs out there that will install things that screw up your computer, kazaa included. Especially internet-related stuff.

Posted by: hawkeyeh

Hey, my computer works again! I actually was using Kazaa Lite. I Don't think I'll download anymore p2p software though. It seems that for any of those programs to be useful and reliable, they need a huge user base which eventually entails hackers and spyware that riddle and rape the common user before he has the sense to diengage from the now corrupt network. I will now be more cautious and yes, buy albums and software instead of getting it for free. As for the problem with my Curitel drivers not installing, they installed just fine after formatting. Who knows what the specific conflict was before, but it's gone now along with a lot of other useless stuff. My machine works great now. I am so happy the drivers finally installed. Now to download BitPim again and see if it works. Maybe my first ringer will be Kool & The Gang's "Celebration" cause that's what I feel like hearing right now!

Several things... If you have to remove the battery, it probably means that you have the WRONG cable... All documentation I've seen says that you cannot use THE USB data cable with the inline power charger. (like some other LG phones) I am surprised that it didn't fry your handset, you were lucky. (See my previous posts on the proper cables to use with the Audiovox CDMA8900)

Sometimes the upload/download will freeze and you have to resubmit. Also make sure the files are not corrupt and smaller than 20K. Start with midi files.

are you remembering to select Telus from the provider list? Otherwise the default selection is Verizon

Like many others. I opted to go with a cheap cable off ebay. Car charger, phone case and cable for $6.00. After countless hours and a handfull of drivers. I was at wits end. Thats when I got the clue. While picking up the phone with cable attached the plug was slightly pushed forward. (toward my chin if i was talking on the phone) My pc made that tell tell beep a usb device makes when plugged in. then imidiately making the unplugged noise. It would come up as usb device not recognized. (cover that next) Coming to the conclusion that there was a bad connection inside the plug. 2 small screws and 2 small clips and the plug was apart to inspect. Holly cow there is a lot of terminals inside. I found that the problem wasn't with a bad connection. The extra terminals were so close by design the slightest movement in the wire would cause the solder connections to short out to adjacent terminals. With a pair of twezzers I broke the extra unused terminals off. With a little side to side bendiing the come off easy. The ones buried between the wires are a little harder to do. I used a small screw driver to push back abd forth untill the broke off. Reassembled the plug and retest. Success!!!

But the phone shuts off. Why I dont know. What I've found to work around this problem is. Cable unplugged, turn on the phone and plug the cable in as phone is booting up.

Next prublem. USB device not recognized. I installed the Cruritel drivers. That makes a folder in your programs directory containing driver files. When windows finds new hardware. Chose to browse to the driver files. Browse to the driver folder then click on next. Just click thru any warnings about driver not digitaly signed. Unplug phone and restart pc. After pc reboots turn on phone and plug cable in as it is booting up. When reconized by windows your device manger will look like this:

Posted by: dilligaff

Now open up BitPim click on EDIT --> SETTINGS. Phone type Audiovox 8900. Com port will say auto. If it doesn't Click on BROWSE You should see the Curitel ports listed. With Automatic at the top of the list. Highlight the word AUTOMATIC ---> OK.
Now click on the + sign in filesystem. Wait about 15 seconds for irt to show. If 1 min go's by with no results. Reboot phone and restart BitPim. Go thru the EDIT ---> SETTING process described earlier. Should work. PM if it doesn't. I'll try to help you.

BTW im running BitPim 0.7-test8

Hi all,

Everything worked up to the point where my images (wallpapers) are uploaded to the phone.

But I can't see those images.

Bitpim show them in:
/brew/shared/images

But they don't show up in the phone.

Once successfuly uploaded, Brewsky poped up a message
saying "Verizon... , go to 'get it now'"
What is the equivalent for Telus?

thanks.

Hi,
Trying to get ringtones on my friend's verizon cdma8910. I can get the phone to connect to BitPim correctly, but I can't get brewsky to connect. In BitPim, the USB port is assigned to port 5. I tried that in Brewsky and it says it's connected, but when it tries to download the download_snd.txt it just hangs.

I'm trying to get the ringtone through brewsky because when I upload using the BitPim method, the ringtone shows up, but it makes sorta a chord sound and won't play it. The icon shows up as a file with an x on it.

If anyone had any luck with either of these programs, please pm me or post here...i'm getting frustrated already...lol.

Posted by: mackel

I think i've seen a bunch of posts by people that have had intermittent luck getting brewsky to work with thier 8900 phones.

I found that if I went into ##7678{end} (##PORT {end}) and also set the DIAG screen to "USB DIAG", it immediately connects and lists my ringtones or pictures or whatever.

I also noticed that it changed when I rebooted the phone so you may need to change it everytime.

This was driving me nuts for days!

After Downloading Brewsky I couldnt get it to work so I kept reading the forums and noticed this Bitpim software downloaded it and still no success untill I launched the bitpim on com3 and the launched Brewsky on com4 and walla they both worked well on the bitpim only the filesystem seems to work but on the Brewsky I went to http://audiovox.packcat.org/ringtones/ and downloaded the betty davis eyes and it uploaded just fine. At the end of the upload it asked me to fastboot my fone I clicked ok and fone rebooted I clicked over to the settings and then to sounds then ringer type then ringer and then i scrolled to downloads and walla there was the file... I am using a CDM-8900 (au) with the PDL-8900 usb cord on Cricket service... hope this helps in someway. BTW this Brewsky prog RULEZ......................

I've been using bitpim. I had no luck with anything else.

As for ringtones, assuming your phone's FS is similar to mine, see this thread.

Thanks to you Bonch, I've managed to connect my laptop to my 8920T (on Telus) (after using bitpim first)
using brewsky to download some photos, which was my primary objective, but wondered about a couple of things:
1: The screenshot bonch put up shows a phone book tab which I don't have so at this time I have no idea how to back up my contacts list. Anyone else have the tab???
2: Is there any plan to incorporate other Audiovox models in the program?
3: Ringtones do show up in my phone (or one does anyway-the rest don't). Wallpapers and the file browser don't show anything, Is this just because I'm using an unsupported phone?
4: Is anyone using brewsky on an 8920 yet, and is it working for you? I'm too chicken to try uploading anything to my phone till I find out things work out. I can't afford to goof up my phone as I use it for work.
5: Bonch, are you still around? I tried your web page link but can't find any reference to Brewsky there, just get the kaza diet thing. You haven't been here for a long time (since you got sick). Hope you're feeling better?
6: If Bonch isn't around is there someone else possibly going to try getting something like brewsky going for other models?

Can I use the Brewsky for my AudioVox 9900? Thanks.

hi...i've read every page of this thread and could not find a complete description of "how to" use brewsky for the telus 8900

i seem to be having the same problem devileyezz was having, but then i saw a post that it was working for him, and didnt' explain how he fixed it.

the ringtones seem to upload fine (to minimize possible errors, i renamed my mp3 ringtones o .mid and small names, with no spaces). after i uploaded the ringtons, i checked with bitpim, and they're in the right area, but when i check and try to select my ringtones on my phone, the list has one of my old ringtones as first selection, then nothing for two or three selections, then for some odd reason, "photo #5, photo #6" etc.. i've tried putting a blank download_snd.txt file...but when i reboot my phone, the same thing happens. (the boot up and shutdown are pretty slow compared to usual too)
i've tried NOT rebooting it when brewsky asked me after i sent the files... and i've tried letting it reboot...all giving me the same result.

sorry if i sound like an ××××××× =-<
this seems like a great program, and we need more programs like this
i just have to get this thing working
thanks for the help!

Hi, I have a CDM-8410 and for me results very difficult to edit in HEX the download-snd.txt and that the reason why I'm posting this question. But I want to know if BREWSKY can support the 8410, or if CID's Tool v.2.0 can save a download-snd.txt for this model.

Please i'm really new with this model and any help will be appreciated.

I have an 8900 and I got my vx6000 cable off eBay. It's an non-oem one, my phone doesn't show up either on Brewsky nor BitPim. Is it my cable? Or is there something I'm doing wrong? When i click connect on Brewsky on COM3 I get a message on the bottom left saying Error Downloading. Can anyone help me out?

Hello, I don't know if this has been posted already, but there was so much to look at, will this program work with The Virgin Mobile Flasher V7, if I buy a data cable? I might bid on one that ends soon, so can I get a fast response?

Posted by: kidmw14

i used the curitel drivers that came with the cable, and the brewsky did not work on any COM port. it just said "port open..." and wouldnt send anything or take anything from the phone. what drivers did you use? is there a free version?

thanks a lot!

Does anybody have any input on how to get the program to work properly? It connects just fine but nothing else works

Posted by: embellish

Hi, first of all I don’t know much about this, other then what I have read on the net, no experience what so ever.
I apologize for the redundancy of this post, but after reading this entire thread I still need some things cleared up (please)

I have a audiovox cdm 8900 with Verizon and Win ME ops
I have not purchased the usb cable yet
I have not downloaded bitpim or brewskey yet
The main thing I want to do is get pics from my phone to my PC

Ok I thought I would ask first before thrashing my phone and begging for help later (or donations for a new phone)
Would someone walk me through step by step how to get this incredibly cool program working for me?
And confirm that the following information is correct for my setup?

I read that lots of people have conflicts with the drivers for the usb cable, (crutial drivers/ebay…) what is the best solution-which cables should I get? The one with the charger/box thingy/inline/radioshack? someone said the ones for the LG V6000 phone, should I avoid the ebay ones advertised for the vox 8900?

How do I backup my phone info so if I do mess it up I can restore it?
Do I have to have bit pim to make this work? (I’d rather not)

I also read: some 8900 users have a crazy reboot problem after uploading the buddy holly ringtone that comes with the program. [I]“if you surf back through this thread you'll find more info about tweaks to the .ini file that prevent the "user restore" error from happening in the first place”
“I was using your program and after clicking reboot phone my phone starts going crazy and its turning on and off displaying Please wait, user data is being restore....Some people have had some success breaking out of that loop by randomly closing, then opening the phone, and pressing the "End" button.-Shrug-if that doesn't work then it's back to the dealer for you. I hope you're within your 30 day exchange period.”
Yikes!!!! I’m not, –I didn’t find the info on how to prevent it…. Is this still a problem, if I just don’t download the buddy holly will I be able to avoid this?

I have had weird things happen with my COM ports in the past, what is the easiest most probable rout to try? (also not clear in the posts)

I also read that some people loose their default ring tones that come with the phone, can this be avoided?, I have also downloaded and paid for (I heard you gasp) ring tones from get it now, I don't want to loose those either.

It appears to me that most conflicts happen with other phones/carriers and not the verizon audiovox 8900, or a conflict between the bit pim / brewsky programs, is that the case?

Thank you everyone who has contributed info so far, and thanks in advance to anyone who will help me. Sorry for the long post!!!!
feel free to email me
Lindy
(thank you...thank you...thank you...)

Any news on Brewsky supporting the 8910? Would love to put my ringtones on an easier way!

Posted by: madler23

I have the Audiovox cdm8900 (Verizon Wireless) with USB data cable and I've installed the drivers it came with on EBay, but I downloaded Bitpim and it says it's not compatible with the Audiovox cdm8900. I've downloaded Brewsky, and although it connects, it pauses on progress, so there's no progress whatsoever (it's like watching the government at work). Anyone have any ideas on what to do, I've gone through all 24 pages of this thread and I have nothing. No ringtones can be uploaded. I should mention that when I use Curitel, I can transfer my phone book back and forth and Port: Com 4. However, there's no option to transfer ringtones on it Curitel's PC Sync.

Posted by: Troublemakerbry

Brewsky is the best!!! i've got my own wall papers-ringtones and i am able to upload my pics for free to my PC. Brewsky is the best application for my 8900.

I wonder if Brewsky will come up will brew8910 some time?

that will be great since the 8910 has more options and a FLASH for Verizon users.

Posted by: TakenAback

If and when it is supported, will it work with the Virgin Mobile 8910?

Posted by: 8910user15650

2... 2... 2 posts in one!

first, PCSync doesn't have a ringtone transfer option... it's only for Phonebooks...

second...

Don't use Brewsky, or BitPim... too many options to configure!!

QPST... just plug your phone in, load QPST, it automattcily configures to YOUR phone, plus has a Drap/Drop interface so no more guessing on how to write the files...

Posted by: Troublemakerbry

So where can i find QPST for the 8910? any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the info

Specifically, search for this:

QPST2_7.zip

In fact, search this board too.
