question about editing my voice mail number using bitpim...

i was able to finally get my computer to recognize my phone and removed the banner. now, i would like to edit my voice mail number using bitpim so that when i get a voice mail i can hit ok to listen (or hold down the voicemail shortcut under ok) and have it dial a pause then my password without having to hit ignore and then holding down 1. i know it's possible, i saw an old thread here and followed all of the steps for changing it but i doesn't seem to working. i saved the sms/voice dat file to a temp folder as a back-up then saved another copy to the desktop as the working copy. i changed only the top one and that didn't work. then i changed only the bottom one and that didn't work. then i changed them both and that STILL didn't work. am i missing something here? and i powered the phone off then on before each try, the banner was like that and i didn't know if you had to re-boot the phone to have any and all changes take place. no matter what i did, it still said only *86 when i held down the voicemail shortcut under ok. any help would be appreciated, i honestly tried it about 10 different ways and had to overwrite it about that many times. i have still have the original one saved in a temp file and overwritten to my phone so i am ok, i am just getiing annoyed because i would swear i am doing it the right way and it's not working...

and one last question. i noticed when the regular *86 comes up, there is an option for the left soft key. is it still possible to put a hard pause instead of the 2-second pause in the shortcut, considering that's the key you hit to resume anything after the pause. i am just wondering how you will be able to enable anything after the pause if the key is already being used, unless the pause over-rides the other options it normally gives you...

I've never gotten modifiying the voicemail shortcut under "OK" to work either. I reprogrammed the key "1" setting to do the dial with hard pause and password. Soft pauses never seem to do the job.

Hard pause is cap "T". Send key used to break hard pause.

Alas, when you want to instant check on prompt for new voicemail, it doesn't use this setting and pw still needed. I always select "Ignore", then hit key 1 to auto dial.

the reason i was asking was because i remember seeing this thread at http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=381287 a little while ago. i just noticed, however, that there is a *86 on the VERY VERY bottom (that you wouldn't notice until you scroll all the way down) of the file i missed before that i didn't see. maybe that was the one on the bottom that he was talking about, since i originally changed the one on the top and the one a few lines down and nothing seemed to work. i also noticed it remembers the phone number of the last call you missed in this file too for some odd reason...

the hard pause is actually the letter "P" and requires you to use left soft key to continue after the pause. the letter "T" is for the 2-second pause that you don't prefer.

and i got it to work. i tried it out a few different ways to see the bare essentials of what's required for it to work. you actually ONLY need to change the *86 at the VERY bottom of the file that's between the yy's, the * is at the end of the line on the right side and the 86 contiunes on the left side of the last line. it worked for me with both types of pauses, so you can do it with the hard pause that you prefer and it will work just like the number 1 key shortcut you use now without having to ignore anything. if you use the hard pause, it will not give you the option to mute the call after it connects with the left soft key like it normally does.

as always, remember to make a backup of your original. there are ALOT of those period-looking characters that you can't replace and/or duplicate. i am not sure what would happen if you were to erase one here and couldn't fix it...

Go figure! I went back and redid this just as before, using the occurance at top and bottom, and this time it works fine. I used the HHD hex editor this time, though I cannot imagine that would matter. When using shortcut, the hard pause acts "soft" though it works fine.

Still, only the "*86" version is used when phone notifies me of new mail, and I respond to the prompt. So, I still use cancel for that, then "1" or shortcut.

it's wierd. i tried it a few times after i made the change and it worked fine. then, i left a voice mail on my phone and hit ok to listen to it and it only did the #86. then after that i held down the voicemail shortcut under ok, which i did before and i SAW work with the pause fine, and now it only dials *86 for some reason. i will look into it...

Same here...
Also, voice.dat content has reverted, i.e., changes missing, though change date still matches when I replaced with new copy.

yeah, i just checked mine and it changed the *86PXXXX# back to #86 on both the top and the bottom. it worked fine until i called the phone and left a voice mail to test it. the only thing i haven't tried doing is changing all 3 *86's to *86PXXXX#. i know in the original thread, the user said he had to change it to *86TT#XXXX for it to work. am i missing something here? is there anyone that actually got this to work AND have it stay after the first voice mail? and if so, can you lend a hand...

A voice mail alert includes a call back number (*86).

When you modify the file, it changes the callback number from the most recent voice mail alert. When you get a new voice mail alert, it changes the call back number back to *86.

Sorry, it's a network thing, and you're stuck with it.

oh ok. i thought it was able to be changed so it would do it every time, at least that's what i thought it heard some people in here say some time ago. thanks for the info. so even if you do mess something up while you are changing it, it looks like it fixes itself after the first call anyway. at least it seems like there is no way to cause a problem with your phone by messing something up doing this, since it appears to fix any errors itself through the network...
