Just bought a data cable for the Audiovox CDM8900 off Ebay for $4.79 +$6 shipping.

Curious part is that there appears to be a 'box' in the middle of the cable. (Never noticed this on other cables.) Does anyone know what the purpose of this box is?

Also, if 'neomuzic' is reading this, do you still rate the MAG-Link Wireless Headset high now that you've used it for a few months? I believe I would rather get a wireless hands-free headset over a wired one, but not if the audio is poor.

This is the exact same cable I've got and I haven't had any problems with it. Perhaps it depends more on the computer.

The box in the middle indicates that the cable is a serial cable with a USB converter in it.

There are both types of cables on the market, and there's anecdotal evidence (kfosh is one of them, as their post indicates) that the serial convertor cables might cause more problems than the straight-USB cables...I think it's really dependent on the PC hardware more than anything else. Some computers are fine, some won't work with them. For about $10, it's worth a shot.

i tryed my ebay cable on 1 laptop and 3 different desktops with the same results wont work but the 20.00 radioshack cable has worked every time both cables have a box in the middle

So far I haven't had a single problem with this cable, also purchased a second cable off Ebay (straight through, w/o the box) and it works flawlessly as well. Recommend either of these cables to everyone, they do work and far less expensive ($5) than RadioShack.

Had a friend tell me that that the 'box' in the middle was so they could use one USB end and be able to match up with different phone ends, (a less expensive way to manufacture different cables to match different phone connections) and were not part of any serial/USB conversion; so I don't know. The manufacturing aspect seems to make sense and he is really a wizzard in electronics. Doesn't matter as it works OK.

So far, I have not u/l any ringtones or backgrounds, have added three games so far. Will start working on adding a few ringtones later this week. Backgrounds will be last as I really don't care about them.

Like to get the shutter sound turned off, but don't want to give up the option to have them shoud I ever want them again. Can anyone tell me if the 'fix' completely removes all options or just adds a 4th option for 'no sound'?

Also I have set my laptop up to use the phone as a wireless modem (very slow, 14,400 baud) but it does work for getting email and browsing. (If you try this, set your browser to not d/l images; speeds up browsing substantially.)

Also using the phonebook program PC Sync (that came with the cable) to add/edit my phones phonebook. Much easier to make changes to the phonebook on the computer rather than the phone itself. Also have the advantage of cut-n-paste using the computer and backing up the phonebook to use on my wife's 8600.

So far using bitpim, Brewsky and PCSync. Everything seems to work OK except when I try to backup the entire phone, it always crashes around folder 61. Anyone have any idea why?

I bought mine from Tangshop. And it's called the charger cable, it has a box in the middle with a red LED.

I have no problems with it whatsoever (Touchwood), and it charges my phone fine.

I assume you mean the password required for when you want to "Connect Cell Phone".

The password is the lock code for the phone.

Sorry, I wrote that wrong. The games were through get-it-now.
