Finally got MP3's working on my 4400

I found a program called WavePad (FREE!) (http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/) that allowed me to easily edit the mp3s to a format readable by the 4400 ... My experience with it has been MUCH smoother than with SoundForge .. You also need BitPim, (http://bitpim.sf.net) of course, I'm using version 0.62 ... as well as the USB data cable (serial interface kind), got mine at Radio Shack ...

With wavepad, just open the mp3. Save it somewhere else as a copy, so you don't accidentally overwrite the original (I speak from experience).
Use the Trim start and Trim End or the Cut commands to cut out the parts you don't want. Keep at most 30 seconds. Goto File / Convert Channel / Mono . You MIGHT also need to go to File / Convert Sample Rate / 16000 although I've been surprised that many of my normal 44100 mp3s work fine, so this step is often unnecessary.

Goto File / Save As. Save it with a .mp3 extension. A bitrate box comes up and Select 16. You can now exit wavepad. Make sure the file size is < 64 kb though, from what I understand larger won't work on the phone, never tested though.

Now simply rename the saved .mp3 file with a .mid extension and start up BitPim. Add the new .mid file to your ringtones and Send Phone Data.

That's all it took for me at least ... wanted to throw this out here in case anyone has been having the problems getting it to work I had ...

Congrats, I've been doing it for months with cooledit on my 4400. All you have to do is open the mp3, resize it, resample it and save it.
