Hey guys
I've had this phone for a few days now. My first try with philips. Currently using it on Fido (vancouver) with no problems.

Coming from a Motorola V690 (same EXCELLENT interface as V300/V600 series, this phone is excellent. Interface is very intuitive although a bit on the slow side (in comparison, way faster than T68 type phones, about the same as T610 series)

The screen quality is very nice, on par with V690 (color saturation is a bit lower, but contrast and overall quality is excellent).

The external screen is STN so only mediocre in terms of color reproduction and contrast.

Camera: VGA camera is very nice, auto adjusting whitebalance and exposure, NIGHT mode is useless, seems to be just adjusting for EC+2. Different modes for selfportrait and wallpaper, external screen and VGA.

Sound Quality: Very good, with little to no noise from the earpiece. Reception has been on par with the V690 (excellentfor a no antenna flip phone).

Ringers: The good part is that the ringer is played through an external socket on the side of the phone instead of through the earpiece like other phones.

The bad part is that it's not very loud. Mind you I odn't think any polyphonic ringer is loud, but still a bit low in volume in comparison to other phones I have used (see my profile).

The phone has a IR on the bottom right, and it is a FULL functioning IR port. Allows for beaming between my pocketpc and a p900 phone (send and receive). The phone comes with software made by the excelleent BVRP mobilePhone Tools (motorola users should be familiar) It accepts normall jpg's and mid's so it's very easy to change ringers/wallpapers.

As a side note: you are able to assign a different wallpaper for the sub screen (external). Pretty cool IMO.

Overall it's a good phone that is good looking (and even better looking on the inside). I bought it for 1 reason only, is that it opens up to 180degrees (completely flat) and that the flip is VERY solid. The only downfall with the V690 is that the hinge is ridiculous and squeak from the plastic on plastic (huge disappointment for a company that has made cell phones for so long).

Anyhow the 855 came after a little research and figured I would give philips (fairly new to the triband market) a try.

I've yet to regret my change. The only thing being less than average ringing volume. Any questions let me know
This little phone is INEXPENSIVE and a gem IMO for it's price and features.

BTW I paid $400 CAD + taxes (purchased in Vancouver)

Posted by: altec18

i rather get the TM100 instead

Posted by: BMWFilms

it depends on the price of the 2...the philips is a very good deal for a cheap price meanwhile the TM is kinda pricey

Posted by: altec18

milkboy is selling it for 420 CAD

my cousin in holland says that even there...the people still use Nokia, S Ericsson more than Philips...and Philips is frm Holland so I dunno...good phone but not very popular and well known

Apparently the battery life on this phone isn't so hot. Doesn't matter, I'm leaning towards getting one when I go to HK next month! You can't go wrong for only $300 including a camera and dual colour display.

Posted by: BMWFilms

yeah must be the dual displays that drain the battery quicktime

I was just surfing the Philips website trying to find anything about this phone. All I could find was on the Taiwanese site - but I don't read Chinese... from what I could gather though, the claimed standby time on this phone is something like 400 hours so maybe the people complaining about battery life have defective units?

Anyway, here's the link http://campaign.pchome.com.tw/2004/philips855/855.htm

I am a bit ashamed to tell you that is true. The Dutch are no so nationalistic in supporting their own companies (Shame!!) Only in the fields of TV, Audio and kitchenaids Philips rulez the business.
I don't know the exact reason for the no so polular GSM part. I think that Philips was too late in terms of marketing, because some years ago is was different. Whereas Nokia was making handsets like 'refrigeratortype' models, Philips was making very nice handsets already. Sleek, good battery life and nice features. But hard to buy (in whole Europe) I think they learned from their mistakes I hope so)

I now see more models availabe in Europe and they are back on track. Good design, good RF, good battery life. That's why my next model will be 855 (and or 755). I just see that pxmania has it available as of August 23rd. € 317. Fair price, although I coud by it in Germany for € 299 (www.otto.de)

I hope you have some background on Philips and the Dutchies. try this link tot see whwat Philips is capable of. They produce so many GSM handset parts, that one will be in your current handset undoubtedly!

Philips semicondutors (GSm parts/ RF parts)

I heard that the new Nexperia chip is in the SE P800 series

I just bought this phone. However it is acting strange. Please kindly tell me if this is normal behaviour for this model.

1) without ear plug handsfree, i can make calls (can listen and talk) fine

2) then i plug in ear plug handsfree, can use handsfree to make calls (can listen and talk)

3) then i unplug the ear plug, and when i make calls, i cannot hear anything with the phone

4) then i plug the ear plug back in, and can use handsfree to make calls again

5) the phone has no sound without the handsfree earplug until i power off and then power on the phone again (ie reset)

so it seems like the phone does not detect the earplug handsfree detachment correctly and switch back to normal mode. Is this phone supposed to work this way? Or is it scrwed up?

Anyhow, I will bring it back to the phone store for them to take a look this weekend. It is getting very annoying...

Thanks.

....... as far as the one I have goes.

Mine's an OLD Phillips Savvy DB (dual band ..... 900/1800).
I bought it in Nottingham almost 9 years ago when I was traveling to the UK 4-5 times a year. Wifey and I still use it in Europe traveling for pleasure now. It was originally locked to Virgin Mobile, but they kindly provided the unlock code when I needed to use it outside the UK. My daughter used it studing in Spain one summer and then again the next in France. Not once, not anywhere, has it ever failed to make, receive, and hold onto calls.

It's as ugly as the proverbial mud fence and it's a little heavier than current phones (all of which seem to be made of plastic) but it is nearly bulletproof.

I only regret that Phillips doesn't offer it's phones in the US. I'd buy one of the newer models in a New York minute.
