Replacing my S55

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So my s55 is barely over a year old. So of course it's starting to mess up. Down key acting like an up key, key presses registerding and beeping, but not actually doing anything. It's locked up twice as well. If I can't figure out how to fix it, I'm going to have to replace it because these annoyances are building up.

But I haven't been paying attention to what's out there. The new Sony Ericson T637 looks nice, but I hear it's nothing more then a new screen and body over the t610... For $400 I'm not feeling that.

Plus, I really like the siemen data suite and how it hooks up with my notes. So I'm leaning towards a new siemens (hence my post in this thread).

So any suggestions as I begin searching for info?

What about a Siemens S65?

If you haven't seen it before, take a look here:
http://www.mobilmania.cz/Mobilnitel....asp?ARI=107673

Very classic phone that most people like the look of

132x176 pixels TFT, 65.000 colours (screen is extremely good and as high as the Nokia 6600 screen)
1,3MP camera (1280x960 pixels)
RS-MMC memory card (delivered with 32MB card)
11 MB internal memory
Bluetooth, infrared, GPRS class 10
Java MIDP 2.0 with BT and 3D gaming support
Wireless Village IM-client
Not MP3 support, but AAC-music should work fine according to the smarties (just mono though)

Only bad thing... it's not yet available
But expected to come in sale during the next few weeks.

I saw that. The lack of IR I find disappointing as I do appreciate that feature, but the inclusion of bluetooth should make up for that. The camera I could really care less about.. I can't wait until they stop putting those in phones (too bad the price won't drop when they do). Essentially this phone seems to address at least one of the 3 complaints about my s55 (Better screen.. the other complaints being no indicator lights and how syncml handles recurring events in the calender... i seem to remember a 4th complaint regarding the bluetooth, but I don't recall currently)

I fear what the price is going to be on that though. the S55 is at 240 right now at expansys (300 with camera) and I'd expect this device to be at least $50 greater.

I'm fond of my s55, but I need to find out if this one year life span is a common thing. Spending 300 once a year for a phone will grow old quickly.

the Motorola E938 looks like it might make a good replacement. About what I expect the s65 to cost and the same features i'm looking for.

now if someone can tell me how they compare at being phones...

What lack of IR?

The S65 certainly has infrared

Almost 3years later and my S55 still rocks. I periodically upgrade the firmware. The phine is worn from having traveled all over the world and the screen has this vertical solid color line because i have dropped the phone a million times. Aside from all of that I still cannot find a better replacement for the S55 that offers all of the features along with reliability to make and receive calls andth being able to detach the camera for use inside facilitites that do not allow camera phones.

I sugest you send ur phone in for servicing or get a new one. I think it is still the best value for the money. Allof these newer phones have slick housings, bifg screens, more memory, updated this and that but the S55 seems to have everything that iI nedd in one phone that is rock solid reliable.

i just bought a beaten up s56. A dog apparantly got a hold of it and did a lot of damage to it so i got it very cheap. I found ebay and www.cnn.cn to have all the necessary parts i need to fix the phone up at very reasonable prices. Just thought i woul dpass along the info.

How much does sending it in for out of warranty repair cost though? And how long does it take?

The problems are really getting bad lately. Maybe one out of 30 times the send call button works, the rest of the time it acts as if it is the + button. The left select button is starting to not respond at all much like the # button does. 8 will start the voice recorder and 7 won't do anything. But the key press tone fires every single time.

Course i haven't figured out what is causing these events. I'm guessing they are caused from just oils and dirt getting into the phone. I thought about just replacing the keyboard, but according to at least one of my friends, she's have series problems trying to call me, getting a ring or two and then saying that a connection wasn't possibly. And at least one SMS has been lost between her and I. I don't think replacing the keyboard will fix that.

I opened it up and cleaned the contacts. Pretty much the internals were clean. So I'm stumped what it would take to fix it.
