OS X, VX4500/6000, BitPim woes

I'm running OS 10.3 (Panther), and I got this cable:

Maybe I'm just dumb, but I just cannot get BitPim to work.
- Didn't do anything out of the box.
- Installed the ProlificUSBSerialOSX1.0.6 driver like I was supposed to.
- Edited it in the way that I believe I was supposed to, though I tried on another computer with a fresh copy and got identical results.
BitPim either complains about time outs in the log and then puts up an error about switching to brew mode, or it gives me a big exception error. I've tried switching around the ports/speeds on the phone, and that's produced no difference at all. I've tried both the 4500 and the 6000, and it's produced no difference at all.
Can someone give me the super-idiot guide to doing this? Or tell me I'm an idiot and bought the wrong cable, and then tell me exactly what I need? I'm frustrated to no end at this point.

I am having the exact same problems with the exact same phone (LG 6000), the same cable, the same operating system (Panther 10.3.4) and the same driver (ProlificUSBSerialOSX1.0.6)...
Has anyone solved this??
Please Help. Thank you.

Unfortunately, I gave up on the 4500 and went and got a straight USB cable for the 6000, and that worked fine.
The cable occasionally likes to tell BitPim that it's not really connected, but that's just the usual BitPim weirdness. I got the straight USB VX6000 cable to work with the VX6000 on my (our) setup.
If you get BitPim to detect the cable (via an actual port used for data, not, say, a modem port), you know you've got the cable working, and any failure from then on is BitPim weirdness.
