Local voice mail numbers requested and listed here…

I’ve been searching for a local voice mail number for different locations I travel to but haven’t found any yet. So I thought I’d start a thread on this. When people travel, they sometimes want to check their voicemail from a landline phone so they don’t use their package minutes. And if they dial from a landline they don’t want to call a long distance number back where they are from or they don’t want to call their own cell phone number (it would be long distance where they are). SO… most Cingular service areas (at least in my state, Alabama) have a “local” voicemail number in each area code so that it can be checked locally. When I purchased my phone my “local” voicemail number was already programmed in (or a Rep did it for me).

So if we could help each other out and list the numbers we know of that would be great! (I am not sure but these numbers may also be called “ back door numbers ”.)

List your own local VM number: list state, city, area code, and then the number you use to dial voice mail.

If you need a VM number tell what state, city if possible, and what area code and maybe someone will know it!

Here’s my info:
Alabama – Birmingham, (205) , My local voice mail number is 1-205-616-0660

Posted by: GoVols

For the time being I need these local numbers:
1. Alabama - Guntersville or Huntsville , (256), Local voice mail number:?????????
2. Mississippi – Bay Saint Louis or Biloxi , (228), Local voice mail number:????????
3. Tennessee – Pigeon Forge or Sevierville , (865), Local voice mail number:????????
4. Florida - Orlando , (321 or 407), Local voice mail number:????????

Thanks in advance!!!!

GO Vols is right!~!!!!

My voicemail number in Knoxville, TN (865) is

1-704-451-8989

I have no clue wehy the area code isn't 865

Posted by: techfury90

You're in Knoxville, which is considered part of the DCS market, which covers NC/SC and parts of TN and GA. The VM number is 704 451 8989. Here are some local VM retreival numbers for Raleigh, NC: (919) 412-8989, 413-8989, 601-8989, 649-8989, 749-8989.

Posted by: mtnbikrfreak

what does the DCS stand for?

Posted by: techfury90

It comes from BellSouth Mobility DCS, which was the original name for the network.

ahhh gotcha

"Digital Communications System", I believe. As techfury pointed out, it was part of the original company's name, as well.

Additionally, the voicemail backdoor number in any DCS market should be npa-nxx-8989, where npa-nxx are the area code and exchange of your mobile number. This may not be true of areas where number pooling is in effect, but I don't know if there are any of those in the DCS markets.

Posted by: techfury90

919-607-xxxx is pooled with VZW (I know because my sister's number is 919-607-32xx).

Posted by: ilvla2

I have two numbers with Cingular, both based out of Santa Rosa, CA, 707-228-xxx and 707-548-xxxx, the VM number that works for both is 707-548-1234, I tried 707-228-1234 once, but it doesn't work and gives only a busy signal.

Anyone know the VM # for Monroe, LA area code 318?

I ask this because the preprogrammed #'s that were in my phones didn't work. When I pressed "1" for the first time to set up my VM it didn't go to setup. Instead it asked me to enter my 10 digit cell #, then it told me it was an invalid VM #. The only way I could get my VM set up was to dial my own cell # then it went into the setup menu correctly.

I find it hard to believe that if you call the Little Rock VM number that you can then access a box not stored on the Little Rock VM server. Of course, there are a lot of much larger markets that probably have a bunch of different VM numbers pointing to the same server.

Posted by: techfury90

Yeah, the npa-nxx-8989 numbers for the DCS market ALL point to the same place.

I was under the impression that checking your voicemail used M2M minutes, which are either unlimited or you have 5000.

Posted by: hchishtie

In Mobile, Alabama the local voicemail # is 251-5918585

Yep, you are right. Most of the time, if you check your voicemail with your phone, you use your unlimited or 5000 M2M minutes if you have them on your account, or if u don't have them then it'll use your package minutes. But the fact still remains you might want to check the voicemail from a landline phone anyway. I like to record my greeting from a landline and also... one place I visit is in a "no service" area so I have only the landline option to check voicemail!

Thanks guys...keep the numbers coming!!!!

Which one of the Louisiana #'s will work for Monroe? The one that came preprogrammed in my phone led me to a system that told me I had an invalid VM #. I had to resort to changing it to my own # to get to VM setup.

Thanks.

Well since we dont have one listed yet, and if you need it for your mobile phone to call the voice mail number and you have free long distance on it (who doesn't now days), then pick one of the closer voicemail numbers to you and see if it works from your phone...if not then try another. One of 'em should work for ya i would imagine. If not let us know, in the meantime maybe we can find a local # you could use from a landline AND on your mobile phone.

Well, I tried all 3 LA #'s and the Jackson, MS number since it was close by. All gave the same "invalid VM box #" message.
I guess I'll just leave it set up to call my own # since it works and it's charging as M2M on my bill. Thanks.

EDIT: I wonder if since I'm GAIT if that makes a difference?

Ah, a fellow ham. Greetings from EM32. While the neighbors are fumbling with their flashlights and trying to light candles you still manage to communicate with the outside world. That's what it's all about. 73's

BTW, thanks dyobnek and rtourge for posting your findings. The Monroe, LA # worked like a charm.
Can you believe I called CS the other day and asked for the # and the lady wouldn't give it to me.
I told her how I'd been calling my own # to get to VM and she said to just keep it like that. I asked again for the # just to have it "just in case" and she still wouldn't give it to me. Hmmmm. It's great to have reliable guys like you to turn to here on HoFo.

GREAT IDEA!
rtourge, thanks for making the website! It's gunna make finding them much easier, people can just go there versus searching the all the pages! If for some reason you aren't gunna be able to keep it up or updated, just let me know and i can host and continue the sweet job you've done.

Everyone, keep the numbers coming in!!!!! This is the only way we can add more to the list!!! (Be sure to give your number, and the city/state that it works in)

FN33 and the call here is K2RRT. The setup is basically two 75 amp/hr Walmart Deepcycle Marine Batteries in Parallel, a 40 watt solar panel w/controller, and a modified astron powersupply (current limiting battery backup mod). The solar panel keeps up for the most part I rarely need to use the astron. I've put anderson powerpole connectors on just about everything that can use 12volts around here so wiring up the setup tonight took all of two minutes! I eventually had the laptop, router, modem, and my icom 706MKiiG running off the invertor and the batteries never dipped below 12volts. I turned the display and key illumination off on the radio and just listened to some local public safety frequencies. I had a good four hours of run time before the power came back on so i'm pretty happy with the setup.

919 is one of those area codes that has been split up a lot. 336 (maybe), 910 and 252 were once all part of 919. About all that is remaining in 919 today is the triangle and a few surrounding counties.

Beware! It doesn't work that way. If your number is from Chicago, you MUST dial the Voicemail number for Chicago no matter where you are. Each region has its own Voicemail number. So you still have to dial long distance to your home Voicemail system if you are away. Entering an out-of-market mailbox number into the incorrect Voicemail center will result in an error message.

Of course you have to put a +1 in front of it, but voicemail is back up and running.

Appeared to be an error in 35R, and 38R, since I had to flash the phone up to 45R to get the phone to find the number. Neither of the earlier flashes would find it on their own.

Yeah i know that. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I don't know what makes the difference, I don't really care. I just know that it does work for me and so that's great!!! Everyplace I've gone out of the area/market and used 'em it's been fine.

Thanx rtourge the list is awesome.

The number listed for Boston doesn't work for me: 401-580-0680

I'm in Worcester, which is officially the Boston market.

Anyways, why wouldn't you call your own number to check your voicemail from a landline?? What's so special about calling the VM backdoor number for your own vm? The only benefit i see, is if you want to leave someone a message without calling them...

OK lets say I have a Alabama cell phone number. If I am in Houston, TX and am at a friends house, I don't want to use their landline to call my "long-distance" cell phone number to check voicemail or redo my message or something like that because it would be long distance on my friends landline. SO if there was a HOuston, TX local voicemail number that I could call and put in my phone number to check my voice mail it would be helpful. Just one reason to have these numbers, but there's more.

but i thought only one voicemail backdoor number works for each person's cell, their local one. it didn't even work for me when i called the providence number, which is 40 miles from me.

+1 360 388 1234 (which telcodata.us says is in Centralia, WA)
+1 360 471 1234 (which telcodata.us says is in Bremerton, WA)

I am in Port Orchard, WA, which is right next to Bremerton. Centralia is definately outside of my local calling area.

The last of those numbers should be 501-772-6245. That's my VM number in Little Rock.

I also had a friend who migrated from AT&T the same time I upgraded; she apparently is still on her old AT&T VM platform, as her entire VM setup migrated with her. (Didn't get the VM number.)

The general rule I noticed for Cingular (orange) in old PacBell areas (e.g. California and Nevada) was that your VM number is NPA-NXX-1234 but it is only accessible from numbers beginning with NPA-NXX.

Anyways,
Oakland CA (East Bay) (510): 510-305-1234
[My number is 510-207-xxxx but I migrated it from the Blue side on Day 1 of the merger]
Fair Oaks CA (NE Sacramento County) (916): 916-342-1234
[Both of my brother's and sister's shared lines, as well as my parents separate account, are of the 916-342-xxxx persuasion]

Don't know if you can backdoor into this one, if you can I would like to know.

And to answer a previous post, checking VM (at least in my case) DOES use anytime minutes, despite unlimited M2M and N&W.

Thanks for those other pilot numbers. My Cleveland pilot number is 216-280-6005, but it won't let me leave messages for other subscribers when I call it from a Cingular phone. The 440 number you gave goes to the same VM system as my 216 number, though.

Yeah, the only way I've found to do that is to dial from a non-Cingular phone and you can get to the voicemail box that way. From a Cingular phone you can only get to the back-end login to VM. I havn't tried it, but I think if you call another Cingular phone and get dumped to voicemail, you can exit out and type in another mailbox number and leave a message there instead.

I would say to try the other number as well...I have a 330 based phone number, but i've used all 3 VM numbers in the past to access mine...if nothing else, give it a shot.

I have 2 Cingular lines both using the same pilot number. When I get into the VM of the other phone and press * (which should let me enter another phone number) it will hang up.

I've tried all the Cleveland/Akron area pilots I can find and they either say my number is not valid or they take me right into "Please enter your password" with no way out to enter another phone number. I'm going to talk to a local store manager that I know and see if he can get me a pilot number that isn't long-distance that goes into the VM system that my phones use.

UPDATE: When I use the *#62# shortcut discussed in another thread, I see my number as (510) 305-1019 so it may be that there are two different VM numbers... more details to follow.

There are so many Cingular phones in NoVA that there are several voicemail numbers.

Within the NoVA area, you have 703, 571, 202 and other area codes working.

My own NoVA voicemail number is a weird area code:

1-410-530-4141

The area code would indicate Maryland, but I live in Culpeper, Virginia.

My original voicemail number had a 202 area code, and it changed to the 410 area code sometime recently, perhaps related to a PUSH_DATABASE that they sent my phone to fix a network selection issue (310.380 1900 vs 310.410 850).

I dunno. It just works.

You just may know me!....You never know where Shizam lurks!

Anyhow....the voicemail numbers here in the Chicago market take from daytime minutes, if said call is placed during that time period.

We can call the Racine, WI VM pilot number and it appears as M2M.

It shouldn't take from your rollover unless you have already gone over your plan minutes....450....600.....900, etc.

The racine number will take from your M2M.....and of course from N&W if it is after peak time.....or on the weekend.

This is strange.....if I dial my own cell number, it still reports to OLAM as "DT" minutes, not M2MCNG. If I use the Racine Wisconsin number, it bills as M2MCNG. This usually varies by market.....but you are in Chicago too, so what is different here?

Question, what the VM number for the new VM system in Birmingham?? I recently moved to the new VM system and they didnt put the number in so when i press 1 i can go straight to my VM. There is this other number i found under my call fowarding setting (+13344529998) but when dialing that number, it first asks me to put the number in where i want to send my message, then it asks me if want to log in put my number in unless i'm on my phone then just press pound. THEN i have to put in my passcode. So to avoid all this i just dial my own number and i goes straight to my VM (although i dont know if it still counts as M2M like before). I didnt have to do all this when pressing 1 on the old VM system. Is this just the way the new VM system is setup or do i need to be dialing a different number?

That's not true.

My friend has 847-899-xxxx in Shaumburg, Cook County, IL his Cingular Orange VM pilot number is 847-284-0155 in Shaumburg, Cook County, IL. It also works for my family that is and 224-715-xxxx in Libertyville, Lake County, IL who switched from T-Mobile.

My other friend is 773-677-xxxx in Chicago, Cook County, IL and his Cingular Blue VM pilot is 630-699-1203 in Naperville, DuPage County, IL.

My other friends are 847-682-xxxx and 847-224-xxxx in Northbrook, Cook County, IL and their Cingular Blue VM pilot is 815-341-1328 in Joliet, Will County, IL.

My other friend is 847-361-xxxx (I think she switched from US Cellular) in Lombard, DuPage County, IL and I have not found a Cingular Blue VM pilot for her yet.

So, here's a summary.
847-814-0555 Cingular Orange, Shaumburg, Cook County, IL
847-284-0155 Cingular Orange, Shaumburg, Cook County, IL
262-498-9993 Cingular Orange, New Berlin, Waukesha County, WI
217-414-9995 Cingular Orange, Springfield, Sangamon County, IL
815-341-1328 Cingular Blue, Joliet, Will County, IL
630-699-1203 Cingular Blue, Naperville, DuPage County, IL

These are some weird numbers..... When I dial the 847-284-0155 it doesn't even recognize me...it tells me to dial the 10 digit mailbox number of the person, etc....same thing when I dial the Springfield one.....the blue one's are bizzare to say the least.

So, what makes me attached to the Schaumburg number....it recognizes me and goes right to my messages...the other ones think I'm an alien

Thats because the other voicemail servers for the other numbers do not have a setup for you on those servers. If for some reason you were set up with that server it would work. You will only work on the server you are set up for when you buy your phone.

JDScott....how many servers can you be setup on....and what determines this? See....I can call the 847-814-0555 number....goes right into my messages just fine. I can also call the Racine Wisconsin number 262-498-9993 and it does the same thing....right to my messages.

The racine number bills as M2M to where my Schaumburg number bills as DT.....you know why some bill as M2M and others don't?

Posted by: Taric25

It's the same reason why local calls are billed as local and long distance are billed as long distance for wireline (wired) telephones.

How Telephones Work on Howstuffworks has an excellent illustration showing exactly how this works.

Wireline telephones use phone boxes to connect to local exchanges to place calls. If a call is local, the phone line in your house is connected to an external phone box, which is connected to a local exchnange via the telephone poles. If a call is long distance, the local exchange routes it to the main exchange. If a call is international, the local exchange routes it to the main exchange, which routes it to a international exchange, which routes it to that country's international exchange if connected by satellite or otherwise.

Wireless telephones do not use local exchanges. They use mobile exchanges. If a call is M2M the signal from your phone is connected to a cell, which is connected to a mobile exchange via the cell towers. If a call is DT, the mobile exchange routes it to the main exchange.

The reason your call is most likely not billed is M2M is most likely it is the main VM pilot, and not the local one. The cell or telephone box that is connected to the VM pilot in New Berlin, WI is most likely connected to the mobile exchange in a more direct manner than the VM pilot in Shaumburg.

So, I hope that answers your question, the rest of this post is additional information.

If the mobile exchange to which your VM pilot is connected becomes overloaded, you may have trouble accessing your voicemail through that backdoor, but not another. For example, if near New Berlin becomes overloaded, you may not be able to access your voicemail by dialing 262-498-9993, but you may be able to access it by dialing 847-814-0555. This happened to me before. I was trying to access my voicemail by dialing it from my mobile phone, and I got the error message, "We're sorry. All circuts are busy now. Please try your call again later." I tried dialing 224-715-9999 (because my mobile number is 224-715-xxxx [all T-Mobile VM pilots are either NPA-NXX-9999 or NPA-NXX-MAIL {NPA-NXX-6245}]) from my landline, and I got the same error message, so I dialed the main VM pilot, which is 805-MESSAGE (805-637-7243) and it worked.

WoW....thanks for all that Taric25....very helpful info.

So does anyone know of a Local VM number I can use that will be M2M? something like 815-xxx-xxxx?

These are all the VM pilots I have for the Chicagoland area.

847-814-0555 Cingular Orange, Shaumburg, Cook County, IL
847-284-0155 Cingular Orange, Shaumburg, Cook County, IL
262-498-9993 Cingular Orange, New Berlin, Waukesha County, WI
217-414-9995 Cingular Orange, Springfield, Sangamon County, IL
815-341-1328 Cingular Blue, Joliet, Will County, IL
630-699-1203 Cingular Blue, Naperville, DuPage County, IL
630-699-1011 Cingular Blue, Naperville, DuPage County, IL
224-715-9999 T-Mobile, Libertyville, Lake County, IL
805-637-7243 T-Mobile, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County, CA

If none of those work, dial *#62# then hit the "send" button on your phone. Write down that number and post it here. Also do the same thing with *#61#. You can also hold down the 1 button for about 2 seconds and your phone will transfer you to your voicemail and sometimes indicate a number. Lastly, look in the settings of your phone to see if your phone has a stored voicemail number. If all else fails, call Cingular customer service, and ask what the voicemail backdoor numbers are.

Nyc - 917-420-0498

Posted by: bobolito

I guess NYC now has 2 numbers? That is not counting the blue mailbox numbers!

Cingular only used to have 908-463-0020 for NYC.

Does anyone know of a VM number for Arizona (520)? The number I'm requesting about is 520-907-xxxx. Thanks so much!

Unfortunatly, if you have a gsm phone the only way to check your voicemail out of your area without being charged long distance is to check your voicemail through using your phone.

That isn't true. If you dial your mobile phone number and the call is forwarded to voicemail, you can check it without long-distance charges.

Central Illinois - Bloomington-Normal (309) - 1-217-891-0771

Posted by: fraydog

I'm not sure what the number would be for old Blue customers in my market (a former Blue market with no prior Orange presence), but mine is:

Carbondale/Marion IL (708)828-0217

Which would be an old Orange number in the Chicago market. The reverse number lookup results are as follows:

Quote:
The phone number "(708) 828-0217" is a Hinsdale, IL based phone number and the registered carrier is Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems, Llc - Il. However, due to number portability, some numbers have been transferred to a new service provider other than the registered carrier.

If anyone knows, can they post the voicemail number for Las Vegas 702 area code please?

For CA customers getting on the new platform - the voice mail retreival numbers will be different. To get on the new VM - customer care can do it if you request it and if you do a rate plan change or are a new activation. The vm works identical to the current AT&T Blue voice mail platform. They will be identical to the AT&T Blue numbers.

Here is a start for some of the new number:

(626) +19092132104
(714) +18058951743
(909) +19092132104
(949) +18058951743

Hey guys/gals, you might find these websites really useful.

Fone Finder query forum
This is very simple. Use this system to find the city, state, and telephone company for a telephone NPA-NXX. For example, if your number is 1-805-637-7243, you would enter 805 for the area code (NPA) and 637 for prefix (NXX). (BTW, 805-637-7243 is T-Mobile's national voicemail pilot.)

Reverse Phone Directory
Sometimes fonefinder.net can give you too little information, especially if one carrier bought out another. This website can be used to double-check the results. In addition, if you enter a landline, it will tell you the name and address of the person to whom it belongs.

TelecoData.us Telecommunications Database
This is the grandaddy of them all. This tells you everything, if you know how to use it. You can also use their automated system by phone! 248-724-DATA (248-724-3282) only requires the first 6 digits of the telephone number (NPA-NXX).

Thanks for the websites. I knew about telcodata.us. They have a WAP site that I've used to look up phone numbers on the go, but I never knew about the automated voice number.

Thanks much!

Your dad's current VM # should be 847-814 -0155 ? It says 284?

The Racine Number is 262-498-9993. This number gets charged as M2M on your bill....plus it's one of the few we can use in this market

You have to go into Messages > Voicemail > Setup.....to change the number.
