PM-8200 text display craziness?!?

While trying to import Outlook appointments into my PM-8200 with DataPilot, I have discovered that the Event text is limited to 14 characters, which is a ridiculously small amount. Even my old Samsung 8500 displayed 32 characters (on two lines).
What seems very weird and doesn't make sense to me, is that the 8200 scrolls these 14 characters along with a bunch of blank space that apparently can't be written to, even manually.
Is this normal? Is there a workaround? Is this 14 character limit typical of today's phones?
