SCH-a650 Issues - Ringers, Wallpapers; Secret Menus

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: josh3736

I just bought an a650 and data cable for it. Thus far, I've been pretty pleased with the phone.

I have been successfully using BitPim's filesystem manager to copy MIDI ringtones and BMP/PNG wallpapers.

However, I have been having a few issues:
  1. The phone seems to choke after 20 ringers. BitPim has no problem copying the 21st ringer, but when you go to the ringtone menu, the phone becomes very confused. There is a blank line at the top of the list and the name of the selected item does not correspond to what is being played. Is the phone limited to 20 ringtones or am I missing something? (All 20 ringers total 144.7 kB, so I don't think it's a space problem)
  2. The a650 does MIDIs wonderfully, but does it support any other sound formats? I tried MP3 and MMF to no avail. (I really want to have "mail mother******!" from Eurotrip play when I get a voicemail )
  3. Wallpapers: First, what is the a650's exact pixel size for wallpapers? Also, what formats does it support? I have successfully used BMP and PNG, but GIF didn't seem to work, although I didn't really experiment with it. I would think GIF would work since you can have animated wallpapers...
  4. How do you specify the text color when using a custom wallpaper? For example, I put a wallpaper on that had a black background. The banner/time stayed black, so it was impossible to read.
  5. Most importantly: How do you get it to stop flippin switching between "Verizon Wireless" and the time??? It's bad enough that there's no outside screen to see the time, but then I open the phone to see "Verizon Wireless" for 3 seconds before I can see what time it is.

Now for some fun... here are some secret menus I've found on the a650:
Perhaps someone can find where in the system menu you can turn off that dumb "Verizon Wireless" banner?

Mod's Edit: Circumventing the profanity filter is against the rules.

Posted by: josh3736

Upon further investigation, I found the phone does support other ringer formats:
It is a pain to convert to qcp although I have been successful converting MP3 -> WAV (16bit/8khz) -> qcp using Qualcomm's PureVoice. Google isn't turning up any utilities to convert WAVs into pmd files.

Hi Josh -

thanks for the codes - I am playing with my new 650 right now -

I bought the USB cable from Radio Shack - but I cannot get a good driver or the 650 - what driver did you use?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I have a lot of midis that I want to set up as ringers - I use MMFPlayer to convert/cut for looping.

Here is sweet midi file - I used to collect these on the web - this one is very well done IMO - expecially if you like vintage Rush...
{edit - I cannot give the rush - it is too big for the attachment - if you want it I will email it to you - say the sork - but here is a great sounding banjo tone - if you like that sort of thing...}

best regards -

Hi josh -

It's in the field setup - in the EMI menu - but I cannot figure out how to change it.

To copy ringers, I used Susteen's (DataPilot) Samsung USB driver. It creates a vitrual serial port that BitPim will connect over.

However, to use the phone as a modem to connect to the internet, I used FutureDial's drivers for the SPH-a600 from Sprint. They seem to work fine with the SCH-a650 with Verizon.

As for the banner, I think I found the menu you were referring to. If you are talking about "ERI Banner" in the debug screen, then that's no good. All the debug menu does is show you information about your phone, but not edit it. (However, the "Position Scrn" seems to show your GPS coordinates, although I think you need a tool to decode them to degrees N and W.)

I can't find a EMI menu though.

I also have found another issue that really sucks: If I turn the power off and back on, anyone in the phonebook who had a customized ringer set gets reset to nothing or a different ringer than what I had set. Is anyone else having this problem?

Posted by: mqqn

Hi Josh -

you are correct - ERI not EMI - both mean nothing to me though...I just noticed that I could see that menu when I scrolled to the right - perhaps in the service menu it can be changed if the ERI settings are in there...

Thanks for your help - and keep on hitting that phone!

I really like my 650 - it seems to be a great phone , and it is still tri-mode if you travel in the boonies a lot...

After some extensive research, it seems there is no easy way of getting rid of the VZW banner.

There are two options:
  1. Go through a long and tedious process that involves calling tech support for a 30-digit number. Pass.
  2. Go to a Verizon store and ask for your phone to be loaded with the Non-ERI version of the PRL software. This is a much more viable option. The only problem is you have to talk to someone who is knowledgeable. Some reps will just look at you funny and say what the hell is ERI...

(Just so you know, ERI stands for Extended Roaming Information. If you go into the extended network, it will say "Extended Network" instead of "Verizon Wireless." Likewise, if you go totally of the network, it will say "Roaming." That's great, except I'd rather just see the time. The triangle indicator shows up as well as the text, so I don't need the text. PRL stands for Priority Roaming List.)

I'll be going to the VZW store tomorrow. I'll post what happens...

In other news, the correct wallpaper size seems to be 128x130. I still haven't found out how to get the color of the banner text to change yet, though. I suspect it might have something to do with /nvm/brew/shared/dir.dat. Has anyone figgured out the format of this file? A wallpaper I got off GIN is listed in this file but the one I added via BitPim is not, yet both still show up in the wallpaper menu.

I also realized I haven't listed the folders this stuff needs to be stored in:You might have to create these folders if they do not exist.

Hey, I don't usually post on forums but I wanted to say how grateful I was for the information here. I had read that I could get free WAP if I changed the gateway but I had no idea how to do it so thanks a lot for the codes. I've also uploaded some great ringtones (Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack ) but I can't get pictures to work. I put bitmaps in the shared folder and they show up as options but they're always blank. Anyone know what's wrong? Also, I'd like to be able to IM with my free WAP. I was wondering if there's website I can sign onto or something to get access to AIM.
Also incase anyone's wondering; I got my phone to work with the Radio Shack cable meant for the a310 or a600 and these drivers:
http://216.119.70.238/Download/SamsungCQX.zip
I'm using Gagin and I learned how to get ringtones to work from the a530 Yahoo Group.

Hi Josh -

I am getting to see the files sytem menu in BitPim - but I cannot get any midis to transfer to the phone - I have put one midi in the ringers directory, but the phone doesn't know it's there...

I am d'loading the new version of BitPim as I type this.

I am getting errors when I try to send data to the phone (I am using the susteen driver you mentioned - on Com6.

I can read the data fine, just no write capability...

What version of BtiPim are you using?

best regards -

You have to reboot (turn off and back on) the phone before ringtones will show up in the menu.

If you are having trouble writing the MIDI, it may be too big. The phone will reject files larger than (I believe) 30 kB. (I'm using the most recent version of BitPim - 0.7.14)

I did visit the VZW store today. Unfortunately, I must report I had a most unpleasant experience.

After looking around the store, I decided I wanted to go ahead and upgrade to the a670. It wasn't going to cost me too much since I'm still inside my 15 days and I figgured I'm getting an external display and a camera.

Well, you need to have the original box in order to exchange phones. And guess what, the box was already accidentally thrown away. The guy was nice but said there is absolutely nothing he can do without the box. Looks like I'll have to call corporate about it tomorrow and see if perhaps they can help me out.

After leaving the store very disappointed, I grabbed some food and realized I had forgot to ask about getting the non-ERI software. Gah. Back to the store.

This time, I got The Bitİh. I overheard her dealing with the people before me; she clearly wasn't very knowledgeable nor helpful. When I asked if I could have my phone loaded with the non-ERI software, and to my complete suprise, she looked at me funny and said "ERI?" (Hehe, I called that one ) I explained that this would eliminated the banner. Her response was a very condescending "No." (The way she said it just really irritated me.) She went on to say that "you NEED that banner so you know your roaming status on the network." I explained that there is an indicator (the triangle) for that very purpose and that I don't need the banner. She responded with an obviously BSed answer of "there is no software that we as a company can load because the network and you need the banner for roaming and there's just no way you can get rid of that banner..."

I should have asked to talk to a tech or something but at that point I was so fustrated that I just said screw it and left. I figure that if I call corporate and they can help me with the exchange, then I'll have argued with The Bitİh for no reason. If they can't help me, I can at least ask them about to see if they do indeed still offer non-ERI software. Either way, it's another trip to the store.

I am very disappointed with my experiences today. Up until now, I have never had a problem with Verizon's service. This has just been a very unfortunate experience for me.

Well, anyways... When I mentioned that it was the ringers assigned in the phone book getting messed up, it seems I was wrong. This morning, my global ringtone got changed on its own! I was not very happy. So has anyone figgured out what's up with the 20-ringer max, ringer assignments getting messed up, or how to change the color of the text when you have a custom wallpaper? It would be great to get all these issues worked out.

Actually ERI stands for "Enhanced Roaming Indicator".

Actually she was partially right. If you load the non-ERI PRL on the phone, the roaming icon will become misleading and won't reflect extended network areas correctly... I know we had that issue with Virgin Mobile Sliders working on Verizon with the non-ERI PRLs. The way we got rid of the banner was to open up the eri.bin file using a data cable and a hex editor, then replace the "Verizon Wireless" text with spaces and copy it back. This made the blinking banner go away and works on several brands and models of phones. Unfortunately with the SCH-A610 (and from posts on here it seems the SCH-A650 too) they've hidden the eri.bin file somehow. I've searched through every directory on the A610 and can't find jack.

I got into the browser setting menu and was wondering if it is possible to change the gateway in order to get free Mobile WEb access. Is this possible?

Absolutely. You'll just have to find a free gateway to use. You can run your own or connect to a free one.

Note that although you won't have to drop the $6/mo for Verizon's Mobile Web service, you will still get charged for the airtime. Your night and weekend minutes do apply though, so it is free after 9.

hey, i got a cable, drivers, newest version of bitpim and i cant get bitpim to reconize my phone (a650) one thing i noticed is under the settings there is an option to choose a phone and my phone isnt there... is that a problem or what phone did u use (josh

Posted by: josh3736

You have to pick "Other CDMA Phone" in BitPim. Then make sure View -> View Filesystem is checked. BitPim's tabs don't work with the a650, you'll have to manually edit the filesystem.

Posted by: HyPNoTiK

thanks alot!! thats what i needed works great thanks again
im looking for a program to convert mmf to pmd, cuz with that then you would be able to get the thing from euro trip

Posted by: HyPNoTiK

when ever i tried putting a wallpaper on it would come up with an error then when i restarted my phone i would go to wallpaper nd the image i tried to upload would be there but was blank... maybe im too tired now (3:15am) ill work on it more tomarrow

Going by anothe post on these forums, I got a certain serial cable for this phone. It fits the phone perfectly, but when I plug it in, the phone instantly turns off and refuses to power on, no matter how long I hold down the Power button. I tried restarting with the serial cable plugged in, but to no avail; the screen stayed black. I've tried GAGIN and BitPim, neither of which have been able to detect the phone or get a response out of it at all (and I'm not surprised, because it's off). Windows doesn't detect anything new, even when forced to do a non-PnP hardware check.

So how on earth do I make this thing work?

Posted by: HyPNoTiK

even if you did have this sound clip in pmd format you wouldnt be able to set it as a riner for when u get voice mail because (at least for my verizon phone) it only accepts pmd formatted clips for the ringer and alarm.

Posted by: aznkaozlk

josh it seems you cant change the color. if you find another way tell us or tell me . the alternative solution right now is go into a image editing program transform or cut the image so there will be a white spot so you could read it. if you dont have a imaging program or you cant do it . just pm and i do it for you. well thanks for your help. i diddnt noe you had to go in bitpims file system view thing. im using qpst right now. so yea. just tell me and ill help you with that . anybody can im me to so i can transform or either cut your image.

right click the file and goto properties nd make sure its below 40kb, i had the same problem and realized that the limit was 40kb even tho it says one thing for the file size you really have to see whats the size on disk because windows does some weird thing when it says the file size... hope this helps you might have to open the file through paint shop nd do "save as" and make it a 256color bmp

heres something i put together for my wallpaper

You're probably refering to the fact that one kilobyte = 1,024 bytes. (and 1024kB=1MB, 1024MB=1GB, and so on. When you buy a '100 GB' hard drive and Windows only ends up showing about 93 gigs -- HD manufactures count by 1000 instead of the technically correct 1024.)

However, "Size on Disk" IS NOT the file's actual size!!! This is related to the cluster size of your hard drive's filesystem. For example, the cluster size on my NTFS disk is 4096 bytes. When saving files, your computer rounds up to fit your file in X number of clusters. This means that a one-byte file takes up as much physical space as a 4 kB file.

Anyways, I'm getting offtopic. Don't even bother with BMPs for your wallpaper. Save them as PNGs. Your phone supports them, they are full-color and have very good compression. (And it's an open format!) I used Photoshop to make a nice gradient at the bottom of my picture so I can read the text:
(A tribute to my former car, The Pimpmobile)
It looks good on my phone, and even at full color it's only 13kB.

(I'm still looking into how to change the text's color. I saw someone else suggest that it might be related to a palette entry in the image, but I haven't really looked into that yet.)

As for the eurotrip thing, I have a QCP version (attached) of it on my phone right now that works wonderfully as the voicemail ringer. In order to convert your MP3s or whatever to QCP... it's a bit complicated:
  1. You'll need something to open the audio file. I'd suggest Audacity. (GPL) After you've opened and edited the file to what you want (I'd have no more than 30 seconds... Your phone doesn't ring any longer than that anyways), Click the Project rate button in the bottom-left corner. Select 8000 Hz. Then go File -> Export as WAV.
  2. Next you'll need Qualcomm's PureVoice. Open the WAV you exported from Audacity and press Alt-Shift-C. (For some reason, there is no button...) Now go File -> Save and you can save the QCP file ready to copy to your phone. If the save dialog only has the WAV filetype and not QCP, PureVoice didn't convert your file. It will not work if the WAV is not a 16-bit, 8kHz PCM WAV.

Okkos, that sucks but I don't know what to tell you. My only suggestion would be don't mess with serial cables, get a USB one. I picked mine up here and it works just fine.

Anyways, I finally got back up to the Verizon store today. And I got to talk with someone knowledgeable! I asked him if he could flash my phone with version 50174 of the PRL. (50175 is the most current as of 7/27 and is on my phone now, 174 is the non-ERI version of 175.) Unfortunately, the only PRL he had for Samsungs is 175. So it looks like I'm gonna have to wait for them to get the non-ERI version. He said it should be in within a month or so. Grrr....

I also talked to him about the problems with the ringers. He wasn't aware of the 20-ringer limit or that the phone resets ringer settings. We thought that it was most likely due to Samsung's buggy sofware. I'm going to keep an eye out for software upgrades for the phone itself.

If you're interested, I'm running:
PRL 50175, ERI 50019
S: A650.XF03
H: A650.08

The tech said that he had just bought the 650 for his girlfriend and hasn't really had a chance to play around with it yet, so he was pretty much as clueless as us with the phone's quirks.

As for me, I'm going out now, but I'll probably play with my phone when I get home later tonight. Hopefully I'll be able to figure out something...

Posted by: HyPNoTiK

thanks for clearing that up... now im having the same problem as the other person regarding the png's whenever i upload one i made it always turns out white, then when i uploaded the one that you attached of you car it works perfectly, i compared both files and they are identicle the one i made is even smaller than the pimpmobile one idk whats going on.

Hey Guys, I NEED SOME EXPERT ADVISE HERE --- PLEASE HELP!

SPECIAL QUES TO USERS - Josh3736 AND mqqn

I Just bought a Samsung - A650 phone from Verizon, and I am trying to use the BitPIM Software (latest release) and also bought a RadioShack Cable for Samsung A310, A600 phone that someone in the forum (user: mqqn) said it would work with the A650 Samsung Phone. But, I haven't had any luck with it!

After installing the BitPim Software, and hooking my USB Data Cable to the computer, I still get no response from the BitPim software, the box that shows: Get Data From Phone is All Greyed Out, Nothing is highlighted, or it doesn't give me the option to click any Radio Buttons... What the Hell is Going on Here?

Also: How do you make manual CHANGES to the Filesystem, and exactly What kind of changes do I need to make Josh3736?

THE SOFTWARE BitPim is installed fine, perhaps My Drivers aren't installed. Where do I download Drivers for this particular phone to work with the Data Cable, and Exactly How do I install drivers, is there is procedure under Control Panel of Win XP to start the process? PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE FRUSTRATION I AM GOING THROUGH, AND HELP!

I also picked "Other CDMA Phone" in BitPim. Then made sure View -> View Filesystem is checked. BitPim's tabs don't work with the a650, so How do I manually edit the filesystem?

Please send me STEP-BY-STEP details via email if you can especially THOSE (mqqn) who've had success with similar phone Samsung A650, I would really appreciate it?

Can't really think, what is it that I am doing wrong, and it's driving me up the wall... Any help from anyone out there, would be appreciated! Thnx again...

You can email me or Simply POST here, and I'll check in a day or two!

I can't get the wallpaper to work. I downloaded a bmp from mywallpaper and it shows up (but it looks like crap) and it put the file in the /nvm/brew/shared/ folder

But when I try to put jpg's in there they don't show up? The My wall paper software said that I needed to keep the software for the wallpaper to work.

I don't really care about the wall paper or the software but I want to put some wall paper on my phone, what am I donig wrong?

PS I am using GAgin and I have no problems with ringers.

Posted by: mysterfxit

newdogpound,

You can't use the "get data" funciton. the 650 isn't officially supported. When you turn on "show file system" you get another tab in the window that says "file system". Click it. You'll see a "/" with an arrow next to it. Click the arrow. It will get a file list of the files on the phone. From there you can open folders with the arrow and add files by right clicking on the folder and selecting "new file".

BitPim works really spotty for me in OSX. I don't have too many problems working in the /nvm/brew/shared/ folder, but when I'm trying to poke around looking at other files I get errors. There are some files I just can't look at .

Here's a list of files I've tried uploading and whether or not they've worked:

Still images
GIF - NO
JPG - NO
BMP - NO
PNG8 - YES

Animated images
GIF - NO
SWF (flash) - NO
MNG (motion png) - NO

Does anyone else know if any other animation format? Can someone post an animated wallpaper that they've paid for through Get it Now so I can look at it?

Posted by: aikinai

Thanks for the help guys; I used Photoshop's "Save for web" to save the picture as a PNG8 with 256 colors, no dithering. I'm not sure how much of that is relevant to making it work, but it shows up without even rebooting. I attached the picture in case you want to try it on your phones.

Posted by: mysterfxit

Nice picture. That's the same way I make mine. Can you still read the banner? I can't see the banner with my darker pictures since the default text is black.

edit:
Oh yeah. You can reduce the colors on that png to 16 colors and cut the file size in half. I don't know if we really have to worry about conserving space, but if you're not losing any picture quality it can't hurt.

Posted by: josh3736

I have had no problems with BMPs, so long as they are under 40 kB. Unfortunately, full color BMPs are going to be larger than 40 kB. PNGs even at full color will be under the limit.

For example, my PNG wallpaper is only 13 kB at 24 bpp. Sweet!

I'm still looking into how to get animated pictures on the phone. I really don't want to have to break and give my money to GIN. I promised myself that I would not give my money to GIN as much as I could help it. $2 for a MIDI, that's ridiculous!

Posted by: Okkos

I shelled out some more of my hard-earned cash to get the USB cable and somehow managed to obtain BALpatch #9 for GAGIN. Hey presto, it works now! I've tested ringtones and wallpapers, and both work fine. A few quick questions:

What's the total space limit for ringtones? For some reason I have the number 144Kb stuck in my head, but I'm not entirely sure where that came from.

Sometimes one track of a MIDI file will randomly mute itself for a measure or two (it's usually the drums). It always occurs in the same place in the song. Any ideas?

There seems to be a length limit to ringtones, as well as a size limit; they just cut off and stop playing at around 45 seconds, though that's just an estimate since I haven't clocked it. Any idea why this limit exists, or how to remove it?

EDIT: I clocked the cutoff limit, and it's almost exactly 40 seconds.

Posted by: josh3736

I don't know if there is so much of a size limit as there is the fact that the phone screws up if you have 21 or more files, regardless of total size, on the phone.

As to the length of the song, your phone doesn't ring for more than 30 seconds. Why does the ringtone need to be any longer than 40?

I visited the VZW store today with a friend. (He's looking into buying a phone.) I was playing with the 650 they have on display.

I was quite pissed when I noticed the display phone did not have the "Verizon Wireless" banner!

The display phone was running:
PRL 50150 / ERI 50019
S: A650.XD18
H: A650.08

The bold text indicates it is different from my phone. I couldn't tell you if XD18 is newer or older than XF03. 50150 is a little old though. The phone still listed ERI 50019 even though it did not have the ERI.

If anyone has any luck getting a non-ERI PRL loaded on their phone, please post about it!

Posted by: Okkos

Quote:

No particular reason, I just wanted to know if there was a way to remove the limit. It seems rather silly, since (as you said) the phone only ever rings for 30 seconds, so why do you need to manually cut it off past that point, especially when you're testing it from the ringtones menu?

Pure curiosity at work here.

Let me add a few things I am using a .mid file that is only 15k.
I have tried to do the following.
use gagin root program
1. create a directory called ringer under the BREW directory and put the mid in there....no success
2. create a directory called USER under root, then create SOUNDS under that, then RINGER under that, then put my mid in that folder.
3. did the same as above but put it under the BREW directory instead of the ROOT.
4. created a directory under BREW called SHARED, under that RINGER and put it there.
5. same as above but under the ROOT.

none of these methods worked. the mid is still not showing up on the phone. I have noticed that the 670 and the 530 are totally different in the way the work and fear that the 650 is all together different then they are.
BTW this is a Verizon phone.

I am suspecting that there are different types of this phone for various providers.
I have been trying to put ringtones on it now and all of the boards (except this one) keep telling me to just upgrade to the a670.

Posted by: Okkos

For Guylan, and everyone in general who's having problems, here's how I did it with the A650 (if you already have connectivity with the root directory working fine, skip to step 6):

0. Don't be running anything in the Windows 9x series (95, 98, ME). Windows 2000 and XP are your best bet for getting everything installed properly.

1. Get the USB cable for the phone. From what I hear, these can be bought at RadioShack, though I got mine off eBay (search for "A650 data cable"; here's one I found just now). If you get the cable from the Shack, it may not claim to be compatible with the A650, but it should still work (assuming it's the right cable, that is).

2. Use the CD that came with the cable to install the appropriate drivers. This may or may not be a confusing and/or highly annoying process. However, if no CD came with your cable, you're going to have to find drivers on the internet, and there's a certain degree of risk associated with that. When you install the drivers, make sure the USB cable is plugged into the left-most, upper-most USB port that you have, because this increases your chances of Windows assigning it a low COM number. Definitely don't use those oh-so-convenient ports on the front of your computer, if you have them.

3. Download GAGIN 1.0 and patch it up with the "RunMe.exe" that comes with it.

4. This is the really hard part: Obtain BALpatch #9. In fact, it's ×××× near impossible. So far as I can figure, it's only available for download at one location in the whole internet, and unfortunately I forget where I got it from. Persistent Googling should get you what you need. Once you have the patch, run it, delete the "brew" text in the text box so it's completely blank, and select the BREWAppLoader.exe that you previously patched using RunMe. You should now be all patched up and ready to go.

5. Plug in your phone and figure out what COM port it's being given. If you installed the drivers correctly, this can be as easy as going into your computer's device manager and looking at what COM port your new "modem" is using. However, if you don't have this luxury for whatever reason, just run BREWAppLoader and try each COM port until you find the one that works. If nothing works, or if you know your phone is being assigned a COM number higher than 4, I really can't help you there. Again, use the upper-left-most USB port that you have, or just switch it around and see if anything else works.

6. Once BREWAppLoader connects, you'll get a listing of the phone's root directory. From here, go into user/sounds/ringer, and create these folders if they're not already there. You may sometimes have to click on a different directory and then click back before the app loader will recognize new files or directories.

7. Once you have created/found the "ringer" directory, stick in any MIDI file you want. Of course, there are numerous restrictions: It can't get too close to 30Kb, the total amount you have can never exceed 20, and the file must be a Type 0 MIDI. Type 0 means that all events in the file are contained within a single track. If your MIDI file has multiple tracks, you need to get some kind of MIDI editing program and merge all the tracks into one. Of course, if you don't have a MIDI editing program in the first place, you might be totally unaware that your ringtone has multiple tracks.

8. Quit GAGIN, disconnect your phone from your computer, then restart your phone (doing them in that order is highly recommended to avoid errors). It's a pain, but you must restart your phone before it will show any custom ringers that you've added. If it doesn't show the ringer at this point, that means that one of the three above-mentioned limitations has been exceeded.

That's my formula for success, and it's worked fine so far. Let me know if it works out for you.

Okkos can you please send me the file you used to get gagin to work with the Samsung A650 to me at ttigerthethird@aol.com. I have been looking for BALpatch #9 for the longest time and cant find a good source. Also I was going to buy the cable from radioshack and from their website it doesn't say if it comes with drivers so if you could send your driver installation file too I would be very greatful. Thank you very much for you detailed information on how to get this phone up and running.

Posted by: pgens

I know balpatch 9 is posted in a yahoo group for the a670, join and grab it there.

Posted by: crazyitalian

I Got GAGIN and BALpatch #9 so now all I need is to go in and get the phone and the cable. I'd rather buy the radioshack cable so I can return it if neccesary. Does anyone know if this is the proper cable Samsung Data Cable At Radioshack. If you notice on the hyperlinked page, it shows that it is the cable, but it doesnt state anything about a driver CD. It says its compatable with FuturDial software. Does anyone have the drivers that will allow this cable to work with gagin. If you do please post them or send them to me at ttigerthethird@aol.com. Thank you very much!

Actually I believe some people were talking about this cable from radio shack http://www.radioshack.com/search.asp?find=17-784

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to synchronize a phonebook from a PC to the a650?

Unfortunately, not without hacking through some the phone's files. If you were going from a 650 to another, I'd think it would be as easy as copying a file over. But going from Outlook or the like to your phone is another story.

To everyone else who is having trouble finding patches or whatever for GAGIN, why not just go with BitPim? It's free AND 100% legal! And there's no obscure patches to waste time looking for. Details on getting BitPim working are listed earlier in the thread.

Posted by: pgens

I haven't had luck copying files on or off the A610 in bitpim, but it will list directories.

GAGIN lists the directories and works for file copying to and from.

Posted by: minkey

I'm using an a650 and I've gotten everything set up to where I can see everything on my phone. or at least I think I can. I can see it with both gagin and bitpim. my question is where do I go from there? I want to just add some tones and maybe some backgrounds. I have no idea what to do from this point? what files do I edit and how do I create directories. when I use gagin it tells me that the directory is already there and it can't get to it. any help in this would be great. even a point to a FAQ would be nice. THANKS

Posted by: sehnsucht

I, for some reason, cannot create the directory user/sound/ringer, or find any of the existing ringers on my phone. What am I doing wrong? I have no problem changing wallpapers.

Posted by: TheMobileMan2K3

As far as WAP goes, what should the port setting be on the phone? 9200? 9201? 1200? 1201?

Also, what are some good WAP sites for obtaining free ring-tones and wallpapers/screensavers for the 650?

Posted by: stewpidasso

Has anybody had any luck with purevoice? All of the ringers I create have low volume. Even when I try to increase the volume with software other than purevoice. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm new to this whole WAP thing. Can someone tell me if WAP is text-only, or should I be able to see any graphics when browsing WAP sites on my phone?

Posted by: mysterfxit

WAP is text only.

Has anyone tried a sequence of images to get animation? i.e. upload sequential files like: wheel_01.png - wheel_02.png - whe_03.png - etc.

I haven't had time, but I'll try it as soon as I can.

I can't even find any animated wallpapers to buy on the web. I haven't tried Get It Now, because you have to buy before you can even see if there are any that you want. Stupid.

Another reason to hate the flashing Verizon banner. Has anyone else noticed that if you select one of the animated wallpapers you can only see the first three frames of it. They all seem to have 5 or 6 frames, but you don't see the second half because it resets to the first frame when the banner changes states.

Samsung A650: I can't install the phone for some reason. I downloaded the drivers from this thread, Samsung CQX, but there's always an error when it tries to install. Am i doing something wrong? Please let me know. It works perfect with my LG VX6000, but my g/f's Samsung A650 is weirdddd .

OK, so WAP is text-only. Is there any way to get graphical internet content on the a650 (such as weather radar)?

Not without buying one of the weather apps from GIN ...

That comes up when I try to view the files on the phone in BitPim, what the???

Anyone know.

What cable are you using? Or doesn't it make much difference?

Posted by: ribs15183

Can you use a driver that wasn't meant specifically for the cable you have? Forexample, use the Datapilot driver for a radioshack cable?

hey i have a question. im messing with my roommates a650 and trying to put ringers there. when i run gagin, his directories are as follows:

\
+en
+es
+download

so i made a user/sound/ringer directory and put a pmd file in it, but the ringer wont show up.

now i figure thers somtehing wrong because when i put my a530 in, the only directory i see is +sound. i can put ringers on my phone without a hitch, but he has a totally different layout. what do i do?

oh and one more thing...haha i accidently stuck a couple midi files on my phone that are about 60kb. is there any way i can delete them? i tried with gagin and manually through the phone but it wont let me...

Hello Everyone,
I am curious to what software would best to use to convert a voice wav so I can use it on my Samsung A650?
I have pure voice but I must be a bone head because I have dloaded a couple off HoFo and I cannot get them to work for me.. Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks

k got a question for those of us in canada usng telus. i got a cable from 3gcables.com and i'm using bitpim. i can browse the filesystem and finally i found where the ringtones and images are. it seems telus has to be different so they put the images in \u\WP and the ringtones in \u\RT. so thats great and now i'm sorta figurein out how to make them display. in the image folder there is 2 files for each image. one has no extension and the other is the same name with ".body" extension. the .body file is the big one so i'm assumin its the actual image and the non extension one must be like a index file or something. the same thing is with the ringtones so my question is this. n e idea how to creat these non extension files? for some reason bitpim wont let me save the files either.... i tried gagin and it just wont work at all. it there n e one else in canada or using telus that could shed a little light on this???? thanx....

Posted by: regkoc

i posted this in its own thread but i thought i'd try here to hopefully get a response..

i just added a wallpaper and a few ringtones to my a650 last night and randomly today it started shooting me a "Not enough memory! New message is rejected." error after i had received a voicemail and it won't stop even though my voice and text mailboxes are empty.

also, i noticed that whenever i hold down the * to try and activate voice dialing, i get a "Voice Tag Empty" error. these two errors are really annoying, especially the first, so any ideas on how to resolve them would be really appreciated or since i doubt i'm the first person who has had this happen, if anyone had a link to another site explaining how to fix these errors i'd really be grateful.

thanks!

I would use cmx studio and convert it to pmd

That's because the phone does not support PMD files. Sorry. If you want non-MIDI ringtones, you're gonna have to convert your WAVs to QCP. See earlier in the thread for details on converting to QCP.

good luck, awesome ringtones

That's not correct. I have made several voice PMD ringers with cmx studio and they work fine on my A650. QCP file work also, but the volume is so low that they are basically useless.

What I have noticed after I download new ringers is that it helps to turn the phone off and then back on again.

Anyone know how to delete the original ringtones?

Posted by: breezy

The first cable I had (from computer fair) kept shutting my phone off when I plugged it in. The second cable (from Radio Shack) does work. I can pull up what is on my phone with BitPim & Gagin and my friends phone that is also an a650. I also managed to delete an animation off my phone.
What I can't do is download things from my computer to my phone as well as know where the heck to see it on my phone. Does anyone have a step by step way to tell me what to do? I have Bitpim, Gagin & the patch, the drivers & balpatch9.
Breezy

Posted by: blindlarry

I use data pilot and just select the ring tone I want. Then write it to my phone. I can get em on there, but the problem I've been having is after I set the tones I put on the phone and then turn the phone off. It dosent save the tone to the name I associataed it with. Have never mess with gagin or bitpin.Mabe you can tell me if I need to get one of those programs in order to make sure these midi files are in the correct folders. And that is why I can seem to save them... I have no problems with moving my pics for wallpaper....Just with this stuff was more straight forward!!!!

Good luck Breezy

Posted by: mv520

how much was the cable at radio shack?

Posted by: blindlarry

with tax and everything, it was $24.00......As long as it says it is for Samsung phones Models 310 etc it will work with the a650

Posted by: mv520

sweet, thanks blindlarry. do you think its worth buying a data cable for the a650

Posted by: bwanac

Of course!!!

But can anyone get rid of the original ringers on our phones? I can only get 3 of my custom ringers on there before it stops taking them! Damnit.

Posted by: blindlarry

Well, don't get rid of all the onboard ringers!! They are the only ones that work accept the ones I have downloaded from GET IT NOW for $1.99. I can't get the settings to work with the tones I transfer from the PC to my phone. Wish I could say I was having fun with all of this.

Wall paper is a snap!

Have fun ya'all!!

They work for me.

Are they under 30kb?

I am using MIDI Tones

Hi, I own the a650 just like most of you do....and am thinking about getting a data cable. My question is this though: Can I save text messages from my phone to my computer?? I want a way to save important messages but I don't want to use up all the memory on my phone. Anyone know how this works or if it's possible? Thanks, John

After a few hours worth of work (dunno why it was so hard, drivers wouldnt work so i kept reinstalling them, after about the 9th time, it just magically worked). I've tried using both BitPim and GAGIN to get ringtones and wallpapers on my phone. I dont seem to have the /user/ folder. I understand how to upload the files, but where am I suppose to upload the files to?

Below is the file tree of my phone. Any help is greatly appreciated.

EDIT: For some reason GAGIN wouldnt allow me to create subdirectories, but I did it just fine with BitPim. I created /user/sound/ringer directory and placed my midi files there. Works beautiful. Now..what is the path that wallpapers need to go under?

Posted by: stewpidasso

I have tried to DL this wallpaper, but the phone shows the file name and a blank screen. Can someone else try this on there phone and tell what is wrong? It's a Tazz Halloween pic.

TIA

Posted by: stewpidasso

Please ignore previous post. I got the image figgered out.
Tazz is a 24bbp image that needed converted to 8bpp.

Thanks to whoever posted "Samurai" in this thread.

BTW... What version of Bitpim are folk using? I have .62 and it's kind of flakey. Anyone tried the Beta releases ???

Did you put the ringtones in the /user/sounds/ringer directory? If you dont have this directory, you need to make it, and put your ringtones there. Ringtones need to be less than 30kb in size. Once you have them uploaded to your phone, you must reboot your phone before you can see them. After you reboot the phone, they should be where your other ringers are (Menu - 6, I think)

I have followed every post here and all this info... download this, do that, try this, and none of it has gotten the new ringers to my phone... two cables later, four programs later, I can see the items on my phone but they are not anywhere to be found on my phone when I reboot or anything... a650 is very disappointing to me... With what I have spent on this I'd almost prefer to spend $1.99 at get it now at this point.... I am so about ready to quit on this darn phone... step by step is so what I need...

What are you trying to put on your phone?

And secondly, can you tell me the exact lay out of the folders? For example, when i first started out, my folder looked like this...

"user/sounds/ringer"

But its supposed to be "sound" not "sounds" Even a little thing like that can throw you off.

Don't give up. I know less about computers and technology than anyone and i was able to do it. hang in there.

Posted by: breezy

I had it as user/ sound/ ringer/

and in sound, I could see that I sent it to my phone from my PC, just could not find it on my phone after a reboot... then someone said sounds so I changed it to sounds, and still could see it was sent to the phone but could not find it.... I just want some new ringers... I sent a few midi ringtones, poly, with less than 10 kb to them.... are the directories supposed to be all together like this user/sound/ringer/, or seperate.....

Posted by: johnny5dmb

after you click on the folder named "/"

it'll open up and then you'll see "nvm", "voicedb", and four other files.

you want to now create a folder called "user"

so now that directory looks like this.

nvm
voicedb
user
$sys.factory
$sys.rmt
$user_dirs
uivrState.dat

Now open the user folder and create the "sound" folder inside of the "user" folder. So when you double click the "user" folder you'll now see the "sound" folder.

Now open the "sound" folder and create the "ringer" folder inside of the "sound" folder. So when you double clikc to the "sound" folder you'll now see the "ringer" folder.

Now all you have to do is place your ringtones inside of the "ringer" folder, reboot your phone and you're all set to go.

Hope that helps.

I also am trying to hack my Samsung a650 w/ Verizon to get free ringtones & other apps. I did manage to get into the browser settings menu. In Web Setup I when to Gateway > Address, but there are 3 positions for addresses 1, 2, 3. Address 1 I'm assuming is the default for Verizon. But under each address positon there is A, B & C. Do I use address 1 B or address 2 A? On WAPTUNNEL.COM they say to configure your phone with there address. Where do I put it? Also they say:

ALTERNATIVE PORTS: waptunnel.com now supports alternative ports- 1200 for connectionless WAP requests and 1201 for connection-oriented requests. Standard ports 9200 and 9201 are maintained as usual.

My port A is: 9203, will it still work?

I have totally figured out the ringers & the wallpaper stuff...
for the wall paper I can actually take any pic (jpg-bmp-png and so on) and open it in paint cut out what I don't want in it then when you go to save - save as 256 color Bitmap... and it works perfectly, now I have the raiders emblem that I copied and changed this way, as well as a personal pic of me & my hubby....

I used the /nvm/brew/shared/ to save to my phone and has worked everytime.

now for games... anyone have suggestions???

Posted by: Aries

Now if we could just get Samsung to fix the ringers resetting when you shut the phone off & on. I have seen in this thread several people have noticed this but no ideas on a fix. The folks at Samsung say that they are working on it but I'm not holding my breath.

Aries

Posted by: blindlarry

The only ringtones that save correctly are the ones I get from GET IT NOW for 1.99 each. The wallpaper works fine, but these ringtones are a mother!

Posted by: breezy

I have not had that problem. My kids dad & I have the same phone (a650) and all the ringers on both phones have stayed when the phone was turned off and I went a step further and took the battery out for two minutes on both, and the ringers were all still there and still assigned to friends... I am using MIDI files that are no larger than 7kb and approx. 30-35 seconds...not sure how many you can put on but someone said in this thread only up to 5 imports for ringers...
let me check....ok, I just put 8 sones all about 3-5kb and unplugged the phone, they are all still there and working...

also, I have a program that will cut midi files from say 56kb & 3 1/2 minutes to 5kb and about 30 seconds... you will have to e-mail me for it though as it won't attatch here, it is a shareware program...

Posted by: Aries

I've got 19 ringers that I added to my phone, will have to look to see what size they are. Breezy are you setting different ringers for specific people from your phone book other than the normal ringer for unknown callers.

I'll send you my emaill addy in a PM for that software you were talking about.

Thanks Aries

Posted by: breezy

I was able to put about 30kb total in my ringers... I hade up to 7 tones save to my phone and was able to save four of them to friends and not lose anything... I pushed the limits last night and did have 12 ringtongs of mine on the phone, but then could not save them to friends, so I cut it back and it works fine....
PM me when you are on, I'll be on most the day....

just so you all know:

i got my datacable for my a650 from newegg.com for $12.
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProdu...-551-120&depa=0
anyone whos shopped with newegg knows that if it doesnt work for ANY reason, they will take it back no questions asked. this to me is a better route than ebay because you know who your dealing with.

Posted by: bwanac

Still didnt get it.

Has anyone got it from you? If so maybe they can host it! Or what is the program called, can I find it on Google?

you're looking for the midi editing program?

Hi all,

Learned at lot from this thread, so I thought I'd give a little back.
attached are the ringer/wallpaper combo I currently use.

"Take that Michael Moore!"

Posted by: stewpidasso

The limits of this BBS will not let me post the ringer.
a 20 kb pmd file...sorry.

Posted by: breezy

look for the PsmPlay5.0
altogether this way... it's free and works great to resize a big midi file (60kb) to a smaller one (5 kb) as well as cutting out the beginning intro beats of the file you don't want (drum beats, blank space) & if you want only the middle of a song you can edit it that way also...

i downloaded bitpim and i got the cable put everytime i try to open the file system it says my phone is not responding while transitioning mode from none to brew CAN ANYONE PLEASSSSSSSSEEEEEEE TELL ME what im doing wrong???!!!! that free wap info was great though too bad you cant get pictures through it veryyyy frustrating.

ALTERNATIVE PORTS: waptunnel.com now supports alternative ports- 1200 for connectionless WAP requests and 1201 for connection-oriented requests. Standard ports 9200 and 9201 are maintained as usual.

My port A is: 9203, will it still work?

I am connecting to the web with my samsung a650 using the waptunnel free gateway. Everything is fine until I actually look at a site such as yahoo or the weather. I get error messages that there is a problem with the data or the content and so nothing ever displays. Have I missed something? Any one have a solution?

Posted by: TheArkMan

ok all, bear with me for a second...

1st..

I have the data cable, and im ready to upload some ringers, so, im trying QCP.. using Qualcom...

i change my MP3 to wav, then save the wav as a mono (16bit or 8bit 16khz.. or whatever)... and then go and cut the wav up... and save the 40 seconds i want of it... and then drag it into qualcoms program.. and i get a QCP file... (its like 70k, i could be tired, it may be 37k) anyways - i upload it into the same directory (ringers) and i have another ringer in there that is mid... but the QCP ringer just doesn't work - no sound what so ever.. - any help??

and umm - the Free WAP - i used what u just said, and got online... but now what is the best weather site for the wap?

thx all!

Posted by: TheArkMan

I found out my QCP prob... it was file size.. i got the file under 30k.. and it works (sounds like crap but it works)... erm - so i dont really want to use this qcp because of the way it sounds - any websites i can get good midi's off of? (free)

The exact error I get is "unsupported content type" or depending on what gateway IP or port I am using (everyone seems to have something different that works for them--I am trying all of them) sometimes I get "security in not enabled" after it attempts to do its security thing. Or sometimes I just get "server not responding." Many times I do connect properly and get menus for yahoo, sfgate etc. weather, news BUT when I attempt to access the actual content, I get the "unsupported content type" or invalid data error. Any thoughts?

finally making it somewhere with the free wap and web browsing on the samsung 650a. What a pain!

This is what works for me:

in your phone:
menu
4
0 (zero)
last 4 digits of phone number or your lock no.
in web setup select 1 Gateway
1 address
address 1
24.3.27.144 in both A & B
back to gateway choices
select 2 port
port 1
enter 9201 in both A&B

press "get in web"
while loading browser hold down left softkey (with 3 dots) until browser menu comes up
you can make changes here advanced settings like changing the homepage to http://mobile.yahoo.com or whatever you would like. I can get and send email, read the news, check the weather. I use yahoo on my pc so this is very useful to me.

Are you now using the Samsung a650?

I am using samsung a650. This phone cannot display web images or colors, only stripped down wml text. Had I known web via my cell phone was going to be important to me, I would have gotten a phone with better web features. Ah well--next time.

I found the following re: web capabilities of the samsung a650:

"The A650's data management, web browsing and messaging capabilities are average for a cellphone: SMS and EMS but not MMS (so forget about attaching movie clips or sounds to messages); UP 4.1 (WAP 1.2) Web browser but no HTML (meaning you can view stripped-down, text-only Web pages offering information like sports scores, news and stock market updates, but not any Web page with images and multimedia the way you can on your computer); limited or no e-mail (again, don't expect anything approaching the full send/receive capability with attachments that your computer provides)." I am looking for games for my A650, I don't know where to put them though, or how to find the types that will work on my phone, on the internet.

Posted by: anm8rjp

I have found a lot of images that I have saved or found, and I made a bunch of them at 128x160 in PNG format. Some are in millions of colors, most are in 256 colors.

I zipped them up so take a look at the zip.

Everything from comic book art, loony toons, pinup(PG13),
Pixar, etc.

Use any you wish.

I still have yet to buy a data cable to enable my a650 being able to use these wallpapers... but once I do I'll have a great selection to choose from.

Hope you like them.

You can find them here...

p.s. I use imageshack.us to host these photos, they are free and host pngs too!

More PNGs I found on another free site

Is there any reason to not use Samsung's own PC link to navigate directories and such with a data cable and your a650.

I downloaded it but have yet to get my datacable in the mail.

Any thoughts on PCLink from Samsung?

I Turn on my phone and as soon as i put in the data cable the phone turns off, wat can i do?

Posted by: Icerian

Okay, just read (more or less) the entire thread

From what I've gathered so far, those codes posted on in the first post do not work for Telus Mobility members. Telus has also "deactivated" voice dialing for this phone since apparently causes un-stability (I don't remember if I read that in this thread or another). And finally if people try to connect their phones (telus models) to their computers the phones shut off (i hope i'm wrong on this one).

So, has anyone who has their a650 suscribed to telus been able to successfuly connect the phone via a USB cable to upload images, ringtones or even games (what's with that? i replaced my sanyo 4500 with this phone and at least my sanyo had crab catch and slot machine!)?

I looked around on eBay for cables and found lots of them for around $8 plus about $6 shipping to canada. If anyone with telus has gotten this to work, which cable did you use? Does it matter or are they mostly the same (IE i saw cables for $50 at a link someone posted by Datapilot or such versus the $8 cable from eBay).

Thanks for reading my post!

Posted by: JDog3

i created all the directories already posted on previous threads and i still can't see my new ringers on the phone. I put them in the user/sound/ringer directory then I reboot...after that nothing comes up just the stock ringtones. Can someone please help?....I am using the sch-a670

My friend wanted me to find out if there is a way to get ringers on to the Samsung a650 other then using the cable or paying for them through verizon?

Posted by: welcomerain

I just got an a650 as a gift and I am having an IMPOSSIBLE time trying to get anything uploaded to it.

I have a v205 usb-to-serial cable from <a href="http://tech.prolific.com.tw">Prolific</a> and I've installed the driver that came with it, with absolutely no problem whatsoever.

When I start up BitPim (which finds the phone just fine on com5) and label the phone Other DCMA, and plug the cable into the phone...

The phone turns off immediately.

I try to 'get data' and BitPim greys out everything, probably because the phone is freaking turned off.

Any help other than 'your cable is b0rke'? I don't want to shell out sixty bucks for another cable.

a) power the phone off and on again
b) get a real photo editing program to make your PNG

if that doesn't work, I don't know what your problem is.

I am connected to WAP and have uploaded some MID files I have saved as ringtones on some websites that support WAP, however, when I follow their instructions to download onto my phone from WAP, it just displays something about unsupported content or something like that. PLEASE help, I have no idea what to do, and it's really frustrating. I went through all the trouble of creating the MID file on Cakewalk, and now this. ANY help would be VERY MUCH appreciated.
THANKS!!!!

Posted by: welcomerain

I ended up ordering a new cable from NewEgg, which worked perfectly. I followed all the directions in this thread, and have successfully uploaded ringtones and wallpapers. Thanks to everyone for their help.

OK, so after the WAP thing didn't work, I decided to go out and buy a USB data cable from Radioshack. I downloaded BitPim, and it opens up, so I put "Other CMDA Phone" and when I follow your guys's directions, it gives me "Failed to auto-detect the port in use. I couldn't detect any candidate ports."

PLEASE HELP!
i AM GETTING DESPERATE AND AM GOING TO KILL MY PHONE! If you could please tell me step by step instructions as to how to get BitPim to work (I have windows 2000) I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT! PLEASE!

hi, i have an a670 and im trying to load ringtones into my phone. So far i've been able to save pics i've taken with the camera onto my comp but ringtones i have a problem. Im in Canada with Telus so should this affect the fact the ringtones wont work when i place them in user/sound/ringer ? I've tried user/sounds/ringer, usr/sounds/ringer and everyone you people have been telling others. I've read every post in this thread and nothing has worked. Maybe because im not with verizon but with Telus. Help? My ringtone is 6 kb and is a 0 type .mid and i also tried putting it in brew/ringer. Any help to cure the frustration? Thanks

Posted by: TheFams

Does anyone know a thread I can jump to that explains the Samsung A650 phone with Telus as a provider? I can't get bitPim to work or any unlock codes. If someone could help me out... appreciate it.

Posted by: halogen8

Thanks for the a650 secret codes.

I'm trying to setup my phone with an address of a public proxy server, but something is wrong with my phone and I can't connect.

I've tried using Get it Now, and that is not able to connect either.

Verizon's tech support checked all the setting on their network and informed me that the phone's software needs updating, so I have to take it in to a store to do so.

Does anyone know if these codes with the latest version of the a650 software?

Posted by: werewulfx

I've been using bitpim to upload wallpaper and ringtones to my a650 phone(provider is Verizon). I haven't had any luck getting the phone to see them till today. When I use the dircetories in the a530 faq # Ringtones: /user/sound/ringer/
# Wallpapers: /nvm/brew/shared/
the phone will not recognize the files. But when I put the wallpaper in the /brew/shared/ directrory, the wallpapers work. I'm just at a loss to where to put the midi ringtones (all under 5kB, and type 0). Since I just bought the phone a few days ago, I assume the firmware is a bit newer.

Ok, I answered my own question. If the root directory contains the /brew directory, just add a subdirectory called /ringer to it and place your midi's there. Same with the /share directory.

Update on my last question:

I had verizon update the software on my phone and Get it Now is now working, along with the web.

I managed to use the codes posted by original poster. They still work with the newer ver of the phone's software.

Now, I'm finding it impossible to download ringers and wallpaper from a .wml page I put together on my website. I had a co-worker try it with his cingular phone, and it worked. But when I try to access the .mid, .gif, .jpg or .png files, all I get is an error stating "document contains no data".

Does Verizon block file downloading through the phone's brower or something?

Is there a way to re-configure the browser, or is it simply a limitation of the verizon web browser software?

Thanks again.

It is my understanding that, aside from using a cable, you cannot add content to the phone w/o using GIN.

Here is the problem I am having:
Tones placed in /user/sound/ringer will show up in the "default ring" listing but not in the listing for specific contacts.

What gives?

Posted by: powdahound

I just got my data cable today from eBay and had no problem getting things set up. Apparently BitPim now supports this phone because it had it in the list.

Anyway, is there any way to get games or other apps onto this thing?

Posted by: cell_gal

Pardon my ignorance. but, what do those secret codes do? thanks. I want one for Telus A650 to unlock (if at all possible) the voice activated dialing feature. thx

Posted by: Iax

I cannot get any programs to connect to my a650 (telus)
I have the usb data cable and I installed the drivers, windows says its connected, the phone says USB Connected, but bitpim and gagin both cannot connect to it.

No need to hit "Send".

For example:

To set the mobile web gateway:

hit "Menu" then 4 then 0, then the last 4 digits of your cellphone #.

That's it.

I've got all the files in the right place. Wallpapers work. Midi files work. OP said pmd files work. Is there a file size limit? I use pmd files with my a670 so I've got a tone of them but when I put them on my a650 I only hear the first word of the song. Are the pmd files for the a650 just midi files with photo ids?

Posted by: bob bismal

I don't think I read anywhere on here, that the only place you can use a pmd or qcp file is for the default ringtone. For some reason the a650 wont let me use pmd or qcp files for individual ringtones?

Posted by: Ira

How about ringer volume...does anyone know how to increase it? Just bought 2 used ones, and already have them on 5, but the volume leaves a lot to be desired. The bad part is that this is not even using the polyphonic ringtones because they are just too low to hear unless you are in a very quiet room.

Posted by: AEprep2004

I can't figure a way to make the pdm files work for individual ringers either, i've tried renaming them as .mid and .qcp after i upload them to my a650 it will play one second and then stop. If anyone can find a way to get around this plz post and let me know it will be greatly appreciated

Posted by: Ira

Just wondering what software version you guys have. Mine is XF03.

Posted by: icehewk

has anyone found a way to make animated backgrounds or add games yet?

Posted by: tempname

I downloaded the drivers from the FutureDial website (the guys who made the data cable) yet Window XP still doesn't recognize my phone(a650). Also, my folders look completely different from what has been posted here:

en
es
download
10951
user -> sound -> ringer

I had to create the user directory myself using GAGIN. I even placed a 9kb .qcp file in the ringer directory, and it stays there when I shutdown the phone, but I can't find it through my menus anywhere. Any ideas?

Posted by: tempname

I have also downloaded BitPim. It is showing my phone as a CDMA modem that is working properly, but for some reason the phone is under the 'Ports Not Available' section.

Thanks for the help.

Posted by: AEprep2004

My cable is listed as a cdma modem also in bitpim where you select which port your phone is connected to type in auto and that should do the trick ;-)

Posted by: tempname

That fixed my problem right up. Now I just have to follow the directions given elsewhere and hope that works too. Thanks alot.

Posted by: tempname

Alright, everything worked out fine. I am a little disappointed though, because I expected to be able to set my friends' ringtones to use the new ones I put on the phone. Turns out I can only change my regular ringtone to a special one...

Posted by: Stringrazor

Apparently you CAN assign custom ringtones to phone book entries! In BitPim, using the DATA, GET DATA menu, get data from the phone being sure to select at least the phonebook and ringtone buttons. On the PHONEBOOK tab, double-click the entry you want to have a custom ringtone. You should see the EDIT PHONEBOOK ENTRY window. Click the RINGTONES tab and select ANY ringtone - your uploaded ones should be listed. Send the phonebook data back to the phone using the DATA, SEND DATA menu. Note that on the phone, the phonebook entry you have edited with BitPim will show the ringer as "inactive" if you chose a custom ringetone but the custom ringetone will work. There must be some index file with ringtone names that needs to be updates for the ringtone name to show up here.

Now, how to get Pictute IDs to work...

Posted by: Stringrazor

Further testing shows that custom MIDI file ringtones (.MID) do show up as available for Phonebook entries via the phone's interface. So it's just the .PMD audio files that can only be connected to Phonebook entries externally using BitPim (or whatever...).

Still no luck with picture IDs or animations. Tried using CMX studio to add images to audio PMX files but the a650 won't play the sound or display the image.

Posted by: Stringrazor

OK, got Picture ID working thanks to info on http://a670.proboards43.com. It's basically the same procedure as making audio ringtones with CMX except you insert a MIDI file and also a 128x110 8-bit color (GIF files work) image. Use the file as a ringtone file. As I said befire, it has to be assigned to a phonebook entry using BitPim since it won't show up as a selection on the a650.

Posted by: Thav

Just in case it hasn't been mentioned yet, when putting tones on the a650 through bitpim, make sure the name of the file isn't too large. The largest filename I have is 7 characters, plus the .mid extension. I imagine you can go up to 8. If you're having issues, watching the log in bitpim helped me out.

Posted by: deovolenti

Stringrazor, you're my new temporary favourite person ever, especially for your latest few posts in this thread.

I wonder, however, if you or anybody else might be able to answer my question: When using Qualcomm's Purevoice to make a qcp file and then the data cable and BitPim to upload my new ring to my phone, everything seems to go well. Until, that is, I try to play the ring. Midi files work wonderfully, but every .qcp file, no matter what I do, is incredibly quiet! I can just barely make out the sounds if I put my ear right up to the ringer-speaker on my phone!

Any idea of either a way to fix this issue, or a way around it?

Posted by: bob bismal

Use pmd not qcp. They're louder. I made one or two pmd ringtones and put them in the ringtones section under Bob's ringtones at http://a670.proboards43.com/ Much of the info is the same for the a670 and a650. I have both.
