Samsung or Sanyo ???

Has anyone had any questions/difficulties/comments/complaints about this phone (Samsung a660 -- Olympic Version)? I have always been a Samsung fan, and currently have the (outdated) a460. It's screen is defective, and Bell is going to replace it free of charge.

I have been trying to decide between a Samsung a660 and a Sanyo 8100. Which one do you think is better?

Do you like having an external caller ID screen? If so, you might not like the A660 that much.

I like having the external call display, but with the Sanyo, it's only with pictures, right? Does it have an option for just a regular name and number? Or just a number?

The a460 that I have right now has the external caller display, and I just flip the phone and talk without pressing the 'talk' button. But that's not a too important option for me. I care more about the quality of the phone (i.e features, internet, reception).

The 8100 can show a picture for the caller ID if one is assigned, but otherwise it just shows the phone number and name.

but what are the downsides to a camera phone? Cable problems? Does sending pix cost money? Download problems? Did anyone experience any problems with the Sanyo 8100?

the only thing i hate about my 8100
(besides the fact that its huge)
is that the earpiece has such a sweet spot,
it can make conversations frustrating at times.

but if you are not as anal as me, then its an incredible phone.
me, however, prefer basic things such as v60's and whatnot

Both the Samsung and Sanyo seem to be good phones, and the Sanyo has the bonus of a camera. The external display is a feature I miss on my a600. The only possible negative is the Samsung's RF performance. I've read reports of both good and bad RF with the a660, so I'm not sure if it's as good as the Sanyo in that regard.

If I were buying/replacing a phone right now, I'd get the Sanyo 8100 for it's added features and solid performance.

There are no downsides really. The 8100 functions very well as a phone, and has the bonus of a camera.

If you mean the ability to send pictures back and forth between the camera and your computer, then yes there is a problem there. Bell deliberately sets up the phone so you have to use their Picture Messaging service. However, there are other options. For starters, if you get the Mobile Browser feature on your phone, you get to send 10 free pictures a month as part of the package.

And if you're adventurous, you can try out third-party programs like BitPIM and perhaps in time be able to transfer images back and forth using a data cable. Currently BitPIM does not support camera picture access, but it's a work-in-progress and it should be supported in the future. Cables cost about $40 though.

Nothing of any real note. There is a minor browser issue that causes memory problems, but only with certain webpages and v2.0 of the WAP browser. It seems to be a compatibility issue on Bell's network and most likely is not a fault with the phone. Time will tell on that one.
