hiyas

most likely the majority of you are living in the EU or US, so my question is applied to the westerners here.. (non eastern asians)

must you use FOMA/USIM cards in order to even access the applicatins on your phone (such as camera, viedo player etc)? if so, how did you get hold it them?

Posted by: n341i

No you don't need a FOMA card to use stand-alone functions like mp3-player, camera etc... But old Fomas (n2051, p2102V etc ) are quite useless and unless you have acces to MiniSD cards of 128mb or higher, the new ones (n900i P900i etc) are quite useless to... If you wanted a cool Japanese phone i suggest you just get a J-SH53...

hiya

thanks for the reply. however, someone in another thread seems to have contradicted what you have said? link:-

http://howardforums.com/showthread....002#post3434002

sorry, but i just need it to be clarified (as you can understand, i don't wish to import a phone and find i can't use it for anything).

and why do you say that the older phones are useless? and why's the J-SH53 so cool?

Posted by: n341i

Older FOMA's are useless because the technology that powers them is quite old and can be found in any GSM phone these days.. Who would buy a phone just to use stand-alone features that can be found in just about any other GSM phone on the market today?

The J-SH53 is so cool because it's a cheap MP3 player with a megapixel camera....

How did you get the N900iG unlocked in the first place? I thought that was impossible. Oh, also- be careful when you're buying. I bought a N901iS (I thought that 200RMB was a good deal for a MP3 Player/2MP camera) and while I knew before I bought it that I couldn't use it for phone calls, I didn't know that I had to use a miniSD card of 256MB or less in it. Also, the card has to be formatted in the phone to use it, which requires the phone's lock code, strangely enough. Does anyone know the default lock code on the N901iS?

I've never seen an unlocked docomo phone before either (@_@;
Anyways, the default security code is 0000. Hope the former owner didn't change it!

Should you be thinking of selling the handset I'd be quite interested

I'm living in China, so selling outside of my local area (Shanghai) is going to be hard. Also, turns out that the former owner changed the PIN code (I didn't know that it could go up to 8 digits(゜A゜)), so it's just an alarm clock and a flashlight to me now. Also, the address book is nearly empty (a reference to http://www.honryu-china.com/ is all that I can find in it as well as a couple of mobile e-mail addresses) and the last text message on the phone mentions going to China (from what little Japanese I understand), so I am assuming that it was lost by the original owner in China. I see that a lot in Shanghai- when Japanese people lose their FOMA/PDC/CDMA phones, it's usually picked up and resold in the cell phone market at Shanghai's train station for an extremely low price (100RMB for a prosolid, 250RMB for a SIMPURE N, 80RMB for an AU Global Passport phone- for reference 7RMB is 100yen and 8RMB is $1US if I have the exchange rate straight), but if it's a Vodafone 3G phone that's dropped, then it's unlocked and sold (Sharp V902SH for 2000RMB)

wow first time I heard about N900iG's being unlocked as well.....

Is the N901iS useable on GSM (Even if it can only roam)??

To Mods: I think we need to submit to Howard a request to be more lenient on unlocking threads. I do NOT want to see this thread locked. If you keep locking threads, you'll just have more people asking about unlocks. - I would appreciate it EXTREMELY if this thread can be left as it is, a lot of people would be interted in such a topic. The unlocking of Japanese handsets, especially in the Sharp subform has been a hot topic.

Also, the M1000 is the only unlockable FOMA as far as I know.

I heard a few times about a limited run of N900iG phones factory unlocked (I don't think there's a method to unlock phones that are already locked, though) but those were unconfirmed. Maybe those people were right? Oh- the N901iS only runs on DoCoMo's older WCDMA system (not the one that the rest of the world uses- sort of a similar situation to the US and its 3G except that they actually did something about it) so it only works in Japan (for phone calls, mail, and i-mode at least- wish there was some way to reset the security code so that I could do more than alarm clock and flashlight with it though). Its successor, the N902iS, can roam on international WCDMA systems, though- I'd like to see that unlocked so that I can get a DoCoMo phone that actually makes phone calls

N900ig - i bought it from local market in pakistan , the mobile shop has only two handsets .and both are unlocked and work well in pakistan,(out going calls ,incomming calls, sms, camera, video, every thing ) i bought it for only six thousand pak rupees which is equal to $93. the nec phones are sold at very low price in pakistan because of their hard to understand function, nokia and sony ericsson is a big hit bec of their user friendly interfac.
the problem i am facing in N900ig is , i cannot find or access its APN menu , to configure it for gprs/MMS ,in its network setting there is only option for HOST SELECTION,and thats all no link to enter ip,dns ,user name , password.the phone has 657pages manual .and it says that it can be used on gsm networks,as well as 3g and umts.bec its an imode phone it could also be used for gprs/wap connectivity.
my service provider is telenor pakistan and they infrom me that to enter its confitguration i need to enter some code which will reveal its apn menu 1 and 2,3.
uptill now i couldnt find it even on internet,
plz help if anyone can ........thanks alot

Well- it's an i-mode phone, so it might not have settings to change the APN (try fooling around the Host Selection menu and see if you can open up something else within that, but I have no experience with it). Try looking around the "settings" menu otherwise- there should be a "connections" menu of some sort. Otherwise, I can only conclude that DoCoMo phones are as locked down as people say if GPRS settings can't be changed. Oh, on a related note- has the SIMPURE N been unlocked yet? Seems like it should have been, with it being out for so long. However, the feature set seems like crap- VGA camera, and not even a QVGA screen, so it might be a lack of interest. Seems like it would make a great spare phone, though- looks great and it's pretty cheap (I think I said before, I can find it for 250RMB in Shanghai)
