is there a way to change the ringer type for text messages other than the five pre-defined tones? none of these tones are loud enough for me to use this phone as a pager. I would really like to use my own cutomized tone for this.

thanks,

on the telus phone you can. You can assign a dowloaded ringtone to be used for texts. one my phone I woul go to menu option 5 "settings" then 1 "sounds" then 1 again "ringer type" then option 2 "text msg" you can pick any ringtone.

this will not work for verizon. i am in the process of figuring it out.. I think im close to being able to do it, but I dont want to kill my phone. There is a file under /db called default_sms_tone.txt. I think if you edit that to include a ringtone in your user/sound/ringer or another directory it might work. Is someone willing to try this?

What do you think would happen if I replaced my default_sms_tone.txt with default_ringtone.txt? The byte size of the files are exactly the same. Looking at them with the hex editor I am unsure of what I would have to edit to make other tones show up. What changes were you thinking of making to that file.

i try it and it works.

wait so just replace the default_sms_tone.txt with default_ringtone.txt then you can do the downloaded sounds for text messages?

edit, just did a quick switch with the download_snd.txt file with the default_sms_tone.txt (backup/rename/overwrite). works fine.

but is jus for the bell tones. is there anyway to use the downloaded files?

Posted by: sz0wxc

I tried replacing the file with the other one and have not noticed any changes. Are you all saying that changing the file allowed you to select downloaded ringers for text messages?

Is there anyplace in this forums to store files as I think it would be interesting to view a complete backup of the telus phone against the verizon phone to see what they do different.

Here is what I have found out..... if you replace default_sms_tone.txt with download_snd.txt it not only changes the ring tones that you are able to use for text messages, but also for voicemail.

I overwrote the default_sms_tone.txt with the default_sms_tone.txt just to see if I was still able to use the defaults, and it works. Am very happy with this finding. Now all we have to do is to find GOOD sounds for text messages ....

For thoe of you who do not see any change, make sure that you power the phone off and back on and then see if it has done anything for you....

Once again.....great find....

Now my only wonder is if you replace the download_snd.txt with default_sms_tone.txt will it allow you to deleate the default sounds? I will find this out once I find tones that I wish to use for text messages....

your welcome everyone.

got it to work as stated above work great. wonder if there is a way to create a link to that other file so we dont have to keep updating it when adding new files.

Is there anyone with a Telus phone that could give us a copy of there phone particularly this db direcotry? I think with the default_sms_tone.txt file from Telus we should be able to get the sms tones working like the ringer tones.

Anyway thanks to everyone for your input and help. Now I can finally here when I get a txt message!!!

Thank you so much for finding this, Adam!

It seems like we have to beat this phone into submission every time we want any sort of customization.

so........how come i tried all this and it doesnt work?

Posted by: VTjay79

i know why.....because i'm an impatient retard that clicks the send button 3 times and i cant distinguish between "default" and download" because i dont like to read.

Posted by: VTjay79

now if only we could get the alert to change instead of the annoying beep, to something sweet, that would be hot

Posted by: Janus67

yeah...that and the stupid on/off sounds.

Posted by: SideKicked

wow i have been lookin for a way to do this for a while...good find

Posted by: Manleyf

bump...

btw...after customization the SMS or VM tone plays even in vibrate mode...

was it always like that? I don't feel like resetting defaults to see.

Posted by: sz0wxc

mine was! However if you put it in etiquette mode it will vibrate with SMS messages

ok I tried this on my audiovox 8900 (From Cellular South) and didn't work, so I guess I'll assume it varies by carrier even though the files are in same locations.

Also on my old LG phones while typing a text message I could go into the symbols and enter a 'return character' to get onto the next line. Anyone find that on this phone?

yeah, if you go into abc mode (instead of t9) and press 1 about 12 times you will get it. a bit difficult, but thats the only thing i could find.
