Cloning Verizon Slider (Help)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: MNetwork

Hello, I have an Audiovox 8600 on Verizon and I'm trying to clone it to my slider.... here are the steps I have taken:

1.) Backup Settings with PST
2.) Change ESN of slider to ESN of 8600
3.) Change SPC to 000000
4.) Go into Service Programming (Dial 111111 and press OK) on phone
5.) Go into NAM2
6.) Change MIN to phone number of 8600
7.) Make sure MDN is the same
8.) Change Home SID to HOME SID of 8600
9.) Change Home SID/NID (both)
10.) Press hang up and let phone reboot
11.) Dial *22801 to let phone get programmed...

When I try to place a call, it rings about once or twice... sounds like someone picks up, but the ring just goes quiet and and then it hangs up...

What am I doing wrong or missing??? What should I do to get this to work???

First clarify a few things....

Are you trying to get a VM Slider to work with your existing Verizon account?

If so, here's a few notes....

step #2 - you don't need to change the ESN on the slider.
Is all you needed to do was logon to verizonwireless.com and assign the Slider ESN to your existing account (under 'acct maintenance / actcivate phone')

step #11 - Was the programming successful? Sometimes *22801, especially if the VM Slider was already activated

Sounds like you can't make calls...Can you receive calls on the phone?

Lastly - what's the phone's PRL (under 111111 version info)
If it starts with 10, then you might still be connected through Sprint. This might not matter, but it's worth checking out.

The whole point of this is to clone the other phone so that is why I am changing the ESN...

tHe phone says the programming was successful...

I can't recieve calls either...

the PRL started with 4 or 5 I believe....

Help??

You can't just copy the ESN anymore and have it work.

The Authentication system will prevent that, you could try coping the akey, if you can find it on your 8600.

What is an Akey???? and how would I get to it?

Posted by: PeterB

The A key is a (IIRC) 25 digit number stored on your phone that is used as a part of a challenge/response system.

the system already knows the akey, and will send the phone essentually a math problem(challenge), using the A-key, the phone responds with an answer based on the same a-key (response).

the A-key is never transmitted over the air, so someone with a ESN/MIN reader cannot pick it up. This essentually killed cloning as it was done in massive levels in the early 90s.

How would I retrieve the Akey??

Posted by: MNetwork

I found a site with codes for the Audiovox 8600... (http://cholywell.phpwebhosting.com/audiovox8600/)... On the site it says to enter "2539**" to get into the A-key settings, but It asks me to enter an A-key... How would I retrieve the A-key?

Can someone help me here??

Hey Guys,

I tried similar thing with cloning and it worked but you can't have two phones at the same time on, if that's the reason for cloning. I had two phones with the same ESN but as soon as I turned on the second phone, the service would stop on both and there is no way you can have two phones with one account. If you need to switch your service to a new phone, it is very simple to login to your Verizon account (as the other guy mentioned above) and change your equipment online and that's for free. I have changed my phones 5 times in one month and there were no charges at all. There is no reason to clone any phone because it is going to be a mess with two active phones at the same time even if it is allowed by Verizon. Who is supposed to answer the incoming calls or what if one already is in a call, Verizon definitely has prevented that. And speaking about the A-Key, the authorization key can not be read or it wasn't used at all, I could see the option from the menu on all Motorolas but either the A-Key was not entered by Verizon or was not visible, the place was empty on the originally shipped phone from Verizon. The next phone I cloned worked without any A-Key. It was activated as a new equipment by Verizon on line even there was no any A-Key in any menu (Sanyo 8100)
By the way what happened to all other Kyocera threads from the forums, were they deleted?

For some strange reason I can see only three threads in this Kyocera listing even though the old threads are accessible from my profile but there are no links from here. Really weird. By the way if any of you need some CDMA software you are welcome to download it from here:

I uploaded some new stuff like the latest Kyocera PST or some Sanyo Camera Phone software.
Cheers

Hey, how did you ever manage to clone a verizon phone. I don't care if you can only have one phone on at a time. I just want to clone it so that I have 2 phones... How did you manage to do it?

Posted by: makden

Clonned phone was a Sanyo 8100, it doesn't have an A-Key for authentication.

Posted by: MNetwork

I thought all phones used an A-key...

I still need help here....

HELP, someone please.

I will try to elaborate this issue with few more words.
The purpose of the a-key is to prevent ESN/MIN theft. These two numbers can be "seen" on the air because the cell phone
transmits them when communicating with the cell site. It is easy to steal and change the ESN on any phone and program the
associated MIN and voila you have a free account to use for a while (until is cancelled for high bills). That's why the a-key
was introduced, to prevent this because the a-key is never transmited over the air. So, the ESN and MIN change are not enough without the A-Key copying and that is a useless attempt. Also you can't read the A-Key from the display unless you have a
special software but if you own the phone or you have the phone in your hands then you can clone it and the a-key can be
copied as well. When you clone a phone you clone everything (it's a original phone's copy) and as long as the ESN - A-Key
numbers match you don't have problems with the A-Key.
What really matters is, if that phone ESN is in the carrier's data base because some carriers accept external source of
phones and some of them don't. Sprint would not accept any phone from a different source so clonning won't work with them for sure but Verizon accepts any phone and activation online makes it easy. Of course, even with Verizon, you still need matching ESN-A-Key pair of numbers.

I currently use a cloned Slider (trimode SE-44) on Verizon. I had to clone it because I screwed up the original phone. This Slider has just a Verizon SID and PRL. It came from another carrier and wasn't even flashed with a Verizon software (flashing software NT1005). It works with Verizon without problems for more than two months. This phone has an A-Key but this key is not changed, it matches the ESN of the original cloned phone. You can change the A-Key by the keypad anytime you want but you
can't read it if you don't have a special software. Anyway, you don't know what to enter as a key so why bother talking about
the a-key anymore.

Totally different story is that my Sprint Sanyo 8100 phone wasn't working good with Verizon. It would work for couple of days and it would stop. Reloading the PRL would help for couple of more days and it was gone. That was an original phone (no ESN
change) but it didn't work because Sanyo has cripled its firmware. If I had a generic Sanyo phone to copy the firmware (the whole memory image) and flash my Sanyo with it, it woud definitely work but I didn't.

In your case, obviously changing just the ESN is not enough because you still have the old A-Key which won't give the right response to the network. It turns out you can't have two different models with the same ESN and different A-keys. The only solution is to read the A-key from your legal phone and then to write that number to the phone with cloned ESN (not exactly a
clone) I don't know if this helps you at all but at least you know some more stuff. Cheers.
