Data mode freeze-up?

Hi all,

I gotta problem with ol' slidey.

When I power up my Kyocera Slider SE47 in goes to a screen with a large graphic of a computer and a phone with an arrow in between. It stays frozen on this screen and I can't access menus or make or receive calls. When I power on it gets to the stage where it plays its jingle then I see the usual "unlock" screen for a fraction of a second before the "computer<->phone" graphic appears.

Any ideas on how to unfreeze it or what's going on?

If I hold down a key (eg the ok key) when I power on, then I can delay the time it takes for the frozen screen to come up. I can even enter my unlock code while it is "booting up" with the hourglass and it appears to work since the screen looks unlocked for about a second or two before the "computer<->phone" graphic appears.

All suggestions appreciated!!!

Did this just randomly start happening?? mine did the same thing a couple times when i was messing with the data cable... i think it happened when i flashed it from vzw back to my VM backup cuz i forgot to get my contacts... i was still able to get my contacts off the phone even though it showed that screen.... the only way i got rid of it was after i flashed it back to the VZW firmware and after its done flashing it automatically reboots the phone and the phoen powerd up fine....

Yeah, it just happened randomly when I turned my phone on this morning. I don't have a data cable, so it wasn't from flashing or editing contacts etc.

I'm curious if there is some way to get it out of this data mode (if that's what it is) or reset the phone completely without using a data cable.

You'd think there would be a way - who designs software/firmware without some kind of user reset?

I don't even have a data cable though, and I have no idea how to get out of that screen.

I did notice that if I pressed a bunch of numbers it would try to dial them, but then flash to the data screen.

Then I did a hard reset (removed battery for 5 minutes) and still nothing.

This problem is usually one of two things. Memory/software problem, or or there is a cold break in a solder contact somewere on the main board..

I may have a fix for it if it's a Memory/Software Problem, I have gotten it to work ONCE before, But before I publicly release the info for the fix, I want to test it out a few more times, but I have no more sliders to test it out on.. If anyone want to temporarily donate a slider to me in this condition, I would be happy to test it out, and then send it back to you.

Hi, I was wondering what ever came of your slider. Did you find out how to fix it?

since you didn't have a data cable you're pretty much looking at a break in a solder or a connection. this problem usually arises with other phones(may show up on some phones as a blank dark screen with FS.DIR on it) when the software is messed up. this tends to occur with people who have data cables. by loading too much information onto the phone and turning it off, when it turns on again, it tries to create backups files of the new information and if there isn't enough of a margin of free space, overwrites or basically messes up the software. but yeah, with the phones that show the phone to computer, someone has stated that they quickly pushed buttons as soon as the phone lit up and was able to get into the programming screen but that they still couldn't get it to work. no one, as of yet on this forum, has been able to fix this problem. some people have stated that flashing the phone with new software works but no one's been sucessful. IMO you should take it to your provider, tell them what happened, and see if they'll replace it. I fried my phone twice since I got it and verizon replaced both phones for free even though I didn't have a warrenty. so yeah, check with them first. otherwise your options are pretty limited. you can try flashing your phone which hasn't been show to work but if your provider won't help and you got nothing but a paper weight, might as well try it. or you you can always try DeadEnd2005's way but then there's the risk of it not working still and you not getting your phone back. either way, it's up to you. good luck.

I would send then phone back.. I would want to speak with him over the phone first, so he would have my number, and We could talk about it. but just because he hasn't used a data cable on it, doesnt automatically make is a cold solder break.

But it pretty well points toward some form of physical damage.

Good luck

Sometimes.. But not always.. I have seen them were there is no damage at all to the phone. no cold solder break nothing, but still in d/l mode.

I ahve too, but with the way people treat their phones that one is a few and far between.

generally when i see this problem come up, it's about 95% of the time due to a memory overload of some kind from the data cable or trying to clear out a file too large or turning the phone off with too small a margin of memory left over. occasionally about 4% of the remaining is from physical damage(sliders are pretty **** strong...I've dropped mine so many times...) and maybe 1% is from some other cause. sliders are pretty durable and they don't have too much you can do with them without a data cable so this is pretty rare.

I see them all the time.. Have a lot of people who will tell me they hooked it up to the charger at night, and woke up the next morning and it was like that.
