Why is my RL-4920 transferring data when idle?

I'm trying out the RL-4920 (also new to Sprint service).
I notice that after launching Vision, my phone will occasionally go into data transfer mode for a few seconds (indicated by the solid data transfer arrows) even when it is at the idle screen. This is causing me to miss calls. What is it doing? Is there any way to shut down vision? The only way I've found is to cycle power on the phone.

The happens on most of the 'legacy' Vision phones, noticeably less on the Toshiba VM4050 (maybe not at all on it). Does not happen on the Nokia too much. I guess it is to do with the phone's processor speed, because I have only seen it happening on the legacy Sanyos (49xx/8xxx/7xxx) and some of the Samsungs. I have not tried the Samsung A680 so I don't know how it behaves.
When you finish browsing, your phone may show the screen saver screen, but the IO socket connection is still active while your session finishes. It will typically die in about 30 secs. I have seen the upload/download arrows flash at other times too, but only for a very short time.
You could disable Vision on the phone via the menu when you are not using Vision if you don't want this to happen.
