How to sync contacts/phone book with Outlook

My biggest priority is to sync my phone with MS Outlook. Is my only option to buy the LG USB Data (OEM) or Data Pilot kit? Would it be possible to just get a data cable and find a free app online that enables me to sync with Outlook? New 4500 owner here.

Buy the cable then get and use either one of these two free apps:

Radioshack has them, and there are several on EBAY...
