Sharp GX20 "Data communication mode"

One day I decided to pick up my manual for my GX20 and have a flick through it.
One thing that interests me, and it's something I am having trouble locating on my phone, is the "data communication mode" (NOTE: This is NOT Data Transfer Mode). On page 18, it has a list of icons that appear on the top of the screen like battery level etc. There is an Icon (number 19) that "Appears when your phone is in data communication mode".
Does anyone know what this "data communication mode" is?
(For those of you who do not have the manual, it is obtainable from Sharp's website in PDF format)

I think this is when you are in a call, and transfering data. Like modem maybe? But i'm not sure.
