I looked around and found VeriChat and Mundu programs, they're good, but both cost $$...are there any free ones outthere? I mostly use ICQ and AIM, so would be nice to find something for that and thats free.

VeriChat and Chatter are both free for 30 days but then cost money after that. You can still get the old AIM client for free but it's a POS. I don't know of any other IM apps you can get for free legally.

can i use verichat or chatter to log into MSN from the treo 600? if not, what software is best for this?

They'll both work for MSN Messenger.

Yeah i finally broke down and am trying Verichat. It's a great app but would like to find a free one. If I had the time to develop a client i would. Until then I guess there is no choice. I would have figured someone would have taken the time by now to sit down and do one with all the other CR*P that is out there for free...

i am a noob when it comes to this. when chatter is running and you send IM's, do they send as SMS or as data? I have a txt msg plan and a data plan that i don't really want to exceed. i am just trying to figure out if it is even worth using with my limited plans.

I'm not sure about Chatter but I can tell you have VeriChat works. If you're out of the application and someone sends you an IM, it's an SMS. Once you go into the application and someone sends an IM or you're in a chat, it's data. So pretty much only the first IM or two would be SMS, just until you launch the app itself.

so there is no real advantage for me to use an IM program on the phone cus I could send IM using SMS instead and save on my limited data quota. i get 25 SMS outgoing and 1/4 MB data. That is pretty lame but i am only paying $1 extra for it and I am getting that + Enhanced Voicemail (Rogers) for a total of $9. My first 2 months are free as well. All this extra info is just in case it might help someone out there

thanks for the info.

Update on the programs: Tried VeriChat and Mundu, and so far I like VeriChat ALOT! more, easier to use, better looking and more options then Mundu.

That's all relative, depending on your plan. I have unlimited data and SMS so I can chat all day long and it doesn't cost me a penny.
