Originally posted by dishdish00 Thanks for the tip, but who exactly is hosting the IP address that is letting us use this for a gateway? When I type in that address ( 216.99.207.233) in my browser I get the McKillion Real Estate Group. Did somebody just hack their server and are we using them for a proxy, or what? If the owner of this website is giving us free internet access that's very cool of him, but does anyone know who this guy is, and what his privacy policy is? Thanks |

Originally posted by BeyondTheTech I remember reading a huge thread on WAP in the LG forum. You can use a program such as NowWAP on your home PC, open up your router to forward ports to your PC running it, then you can use your home IP address (hopefully cable, not DSL since it's more static) to surf away. No more relying on someone else's servers. One thing I like doing is setting up multiple Web Sessions. I made a Yahoo one based on the first post on this thread, then copied the entry and changed the homepage for each web session. I also turned off caching (last option) so that it will pull new data everytime - that helped out for a printer-friendly movie listing page from Loews Theatre in New Brunswick, NJ: http://www.enjoytheshow.com/showtim...s.cfm?tid=AACPH Don't know what to put for a homepage? Check Yahoo! Originally posted by Neros Why even use a WAP gateway with the 710? I am just running a simple HTTP Proxy, and it is plenty fast. In fact, as I discovered, the phone browser requires the "Content-Length" header, which some sites dont send out.. I modified my proxy to add this header if it is not already included. Seems like people can get around the WAP.now registration/frustration, if they are only trying to connect a 710 to the net, by just setting up a simple web proxy. |

Originally posted by dr.smith What proxy are you using that adds the "Content-Length" header? |
I am using squid, which does not yet add the header (though I am looking at the source, and have a pretty good idea of how to do it.. will work on that tonight and tomorrow).. but in the meantime, I wrote a little php wrapper that downloads content from any url I give it, and adds the content length header (it also modifies the links to go through the php script, so links off the script are added as well).

The one from here still doesn't work so i use the instructions from nuclear elephant which just has a link to some proxies. Also i don't think you need the password. Anyway what is a faster gateway i an use? What is wap.now? Its too slow on the moto luckily i'm keeping sprint and the toshiba phone is great. I can't really use web on verizon during the week before mind anyway because i added on to my womans plan |

Originally posted by dliliedahl Got it working great with my own Wap.now server! Interesting how VZW does not charge for data usage like other carriers. Perhaps their bean counters figured they could get more revenue by giving away the network data access and charging instead for the services on top of it (GIN, per message charges for EVERYTHING - AIM, PIX, etc). Anyways, using your own gateway with your own pixplace server certainly levels that playing field. I wonder how long before they start charging by MB usage? |

Originally posted by Quatre My main question then would be do you then have to leave your computer or at least your home broadband connection on to use it from your phone? something i really dont want to do. also how far can you be? i guess its still a gateway you setup so i'm assuming no limit on distance as if it was wifi or bt. |
|
Originally posted by Quatre Verizon not charging for something that other carriers do? thast unheard of. I dont know of any carriers that charge for MB usage in fact i think its horrible of verizon to use your minutes for web use making it only realistic to do at night or weekends and that includes using the BT of the v710 to connect laptop or palm to the net. wouldn't want to do that during peak hours and use all your minutes and run up overage charges. |

(You do use up minutes on top of it). I used it for a while to get email while I was at airports, etc. T-mobile has a data only plan that I used to use for my sidekick - very reasonable unlimited MB for $30/month. They also do not charge you for minutes. The downside is that a color sidekick goes for about $300, and the phone has a lousy form factor. It is unparalled for its IM, text messaging, and especially email, but not useful at all as a phone. Ultimately why I got rid of it. I was hoping the 710 would replace both of these devices, which is why I got rid of them for it. So far I have been sorely disappointed. Lets hope the hacker fund is fruitful, I gave my $25! |

It acts as a gateway by sitting on a broadband Internet connection and accepting wap/http requests OVER THE INTERNET, which it then routes to their destination, returning the reply to the originator (your phone). You make the connection to the gateway by using your handset to connect to the Internet via Verizon Wireless's 1xRTT packet data service, for which you pay minutes from your plan. |

Not to mention the fact that the toshiba screen is just bigger in web application and easier to type on and uses much better t9. So even if the moto was equally as fast at web I'd still have to deal with the smaller screen usage and horrible itap . i just use abc mode but it smuch slower then t9, oh well. |

Originally posted by tbernardi What is it exactly that you find wrong with iTap? I like it better than T9 and find it very easy and fast to use. I have no problems with it and I used to have a phone with T9. You seem very happy with Sprint and your phone on that service and I wonder why you are spending so much time on another solution when you original is working well for you. I use Now.Wap and am happy with the speed that I get, however I have never compared it to Sprint. I use WAP very rarely and voice and service of Verizon is most important to me. |
|
Originally posted by Quatre But keeping on topic, how can you say you are so happy wiht it and then at the same time say you really dont use it much and just have verizon for voice and service when this is a wap thread. |

Originally posted by tbernardi You have a point here. I have researched WAP quite a bit because I really want the ability to check weather, news, stocks sports, movies, etc. When I initially set it up I used it quite a bit. But, it's true I don't use it that often. Maybe once a week. I think the LG 6000 has T9, which I had before and I do not really notice much of a difference, but you must use it quite a bit. I have no problem with you posting your opinion. That's what makes these forums so educational. I am not a V710 or Verizon die hard. I posted my comment because you seem to repeat the same thing about T9 and Sprint and your motive wasn't clear. Now.wap asks for your name, e-mail address and phone number. I don't recall a long registration form. If I used it as much as you seem to, I would probably pay for MobileWeb. Too bad it uses minutes as well or it would be a great service. Speed is fairly good now also. Well, good luck. |
