Originally posted by rchusid I just got the V710. I suspect from the messages above that this might be a new change from Verizon to prevent us from using an alternative. I note that there is a lock symbol after the VZW web session despite having added two alternatives from instructions above. I wonder if they have somehow locked it so that only VZW launches regardless of what is done. |

Is there any way to tell if they now actually consider me a subscriber. My guess is that this will now show up on my bill despite never entering the command to subscribe. |

Originally posted by hymy As has been noted, when you have the latest firmware on your V710 it will not let you change the homepage. The method to date for fixing it requires a cable, software and tinkering with the phone. I inadvertantly discovered that if you use a gateway IP setting that is an actual webserver instead of a wap gateway or transparent proxy, the phone will load the default document from the webserver instead of the homepage. But you can't surf, all you can do is see that one page. However you can then bookmark that page using the snapshot feature of the browser. After you have the snapshot, you can set the phone to use a proxy, and use the snapshot to bypass the homepage. When you get the 404 error because the homepage is invalid, you use the menu to load the snapshot from before, and your off surfing. It's a bit of clunky Kluge, but it works without needing to hack the phone. What I did was, I downloaded proxy+ 3.00, it is a proxy/webserver and is free for upto 2 concurrent users. I set it up with an HTML file in it's root directory. That page contained one link to a webpage on another webserver that I use for mobile apps. Next I made a mobile websession for the phone that pointed to the proxy+ webserver with the page that had that one link, which I then bookmarked. Then I created another mobile session that used the proxy+ proxy as the gateway. It's that session I use for web surfing. When I launch the browser after the 404 error I simply load the snapshot, and click the link which sends me to my portal, where I can then surf onto the web. Plus, If I need to change the content I don't need to mess with phone. |

Originally posted by Humpa hymy, that's a very cool trick indeed! I setup a new WebSession, and put in my IP address and port 80. I put my www.humpa.com/url.php in the html root (as index.php, of course). The homepage is still http://homepage I fired up that WebSession, and I get that index.php file, but nothing happens if I click any links. I saved a snapshot of it though. I then changed the port from port 80 to my Squid Proxy port. The homepage is still http://homepage. When I fire up the WebSession now, I still get the same index.php, but now the links work. I have "do not cache" set in the WebSession settings, but it always comes up with that original index.php it went to first (for whatever that's worth). This may prove a very nice find for some ...

This guide will assume you're behind a router. 1. We need to change your internal IP to a static IP, otherwise every computer restart, 'Now.Wap' will cease to work. To do this, in WinXP: Open 'Network Connections' Left click on 'Local Area Connection' On the left side of that window some information should show up, displaying your computer's IP address, usually it's something like '192.168.0.3' or something similar (keep this window open for reference). Now, right click 'Local Area Connection', and click 'Properties', then Click on "Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)' and then 'Properties'. Click on 'Use the following IP address', we are going to enter an IP address similar to the IP address you are already using, only changing the last 3 numbers to '115', you can pick any number between 100-215 really, we're just trying to avoid bumping into a dynamically allocated IP. Now enter the same subnet mask as the previous window showed you, usually '255.255.255.0', the gateway and Prefered DNS should be your address, with a "1" as the last number, like "192.168.0.1". Now Click ok, and hopefully, you'll still be able to connect to the internet, if not, something went wrong, and go back to the inital settings. 2. Now that we have a static IP, we need to change the router settings to forward our 'Now.WAP' HTTP port to our computer. To access the router settings, most of the time you can juse use a web browser, like so: http://192.168.0.1 (or your router's IP), please refer to your router manual if this doesn't work. Once you get to the router settings, you need to find a tab, or setting, related to "Port Forwarding". It will ask for an IP address to forward to, which will be your new IP address of your computer we just setup, in this case, "192.168.0.115", and it will ask for a port, use "8080", if it has a range of ports option, just put "8080" in both. You may needto click on "Enable" to activate that specific port setting. Now, Click on "apply" or "done" or something like that to apply the settings, and that should do it for that. 3. This still involves the router settings, so keep that window open. You need to find your external IP address, usually the router has a tab called "status", where this is located. Remember this WAN IP, you will need it for the phone setup. 4. Now we need to install Now.WAP. Service Tab-> Click on "run as a service" HTTP Tab->Enable the first 3 options. And enter "8080" as the HTTP Proxy Port. Users Tab->Check all 3 boxes at the top. And add a user at the bottom, you will use this user name and password on your phone. Click apply, and that should do it. 5. Now you have everything on the computer setup, onto the phone.. Menu->Settings->Mobile Web->Web Sessions->New Entry Name: Any name you want Homepage: Any of the WAP pages you want UserID: The userID you made on Now.WAP Password: The password you made for that UserID Gateway IP: Your routers WAN IP, we got from step 3. Port 1: 8080 6. Now set that new session to the default, and you should be able to browse WAP sites, using your home computer as the gateway. Hope this helps, Good luck, if anything stops working, just go back to the default settings! |

So, the upside of using this method is that you will basically be able to browse the entire internet (with exceptions, of course - https and so forth will not fly, for e-mail, try GMail Lite with this method, works like a charm). THE WAY THIS WORKS: When you do a standard web search on Google Mobile (NOT Mobile web search), Google's server loads up the page, and basically 'translates' it to make it more readable for the mobile device you are on. It doesn't always turn out too readable, but it does work. Because of the translation taking place at Google, the URL you are actually loading is on Google's server - which means the page will load using Google's webserver as a psuedo-proxy. Example: (these URLs are greatly simplified - the actual URLs are much longer) If you load 'www.junk.com' from a Google search on the wap Google, it will load a script on Google's server to 'translate' the page. The URL it is loading on your mobile is something similar to this: http://google.com/TheScript?www.junk.com As you can see - even though Google is loading the *content* from junk.com the actual URL loaded into your mobile is on Google's server, and therefore, local to Google. Remember how using Yahoo the same way as mentioned in earlier posts only allowed you access to some pages on Yahoo's network? This is how this method 'beats' that limitation. The downside is that the 'Mobile Web' search is basically useless - you are using Google's http server as a proxy, so you can only load pages local to google - which the 'translated' WWW pages are - but if you try and load a result from Google's 'Mobile Web' search, it is trying to load the page directly from the other server, hence, failure. However, you do get Google Local also - driving directions, weather, phone numbers, addresses, etc... AND the entire rest of the web. Sort of an odd deal - you get the entire web except for the mobile web. OH YEAH - there are sites on the web (such as comp.uark.edu/~sposato/goto.html ) that allow you to enter an URL and it takes you there. Search for "Spo's QuickJump" on the websearch, go there, and snapshot that - when you go there and type in a URL, because you got there through the google proxy, it will consequently load the URL you type through the Google proxy and it will load up like a champion. If you're all tapped out on the other methods and pissed off, try this. It is reliable - doesn't use some backwoods proxy of questionable reliability - and allows access to a big chunk of the www. -- Alex |
