I've been searching for about a week now and I can not find out how to change the message tone on a 8900 to an mp3.

Can someone please tell me how to do so?

yes, i have it posted on here. i figured out how. you have to edit the default_sms_tone.txt file. do a search.

I just have a couple of questions.

if you replace default_sms_tone.txt with download_snd.txt it changes the text message and voicemail ring tone but what does it change it to, is it the default ringtone setup on the phone?

If so how do I set it to be controlled by some other change on the phone and if it is not set by the default ringtone on the phone what change on the phone then determines what ringtone, "message tone," you are using?

Also just to double check you are using BitPim to make these changes right?

Those text files control which type of tones it allows you to pick for each of the different ring causes. (VM, SMS, CALL ect). If you replace them as you stated you replace the menu allowing you to select the 3 standard text tones for your phone with a menu that lets you pick pick your text tone from your downloaded files.
