8900 as a modem???

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: VTjay79

I saw a post several months ago about using the 8900 as a modem, for free if you are sneaky about it. However i never saw that post again, and i dont recal what it said to do, except i know it said not to download a lot of data because they will catch you. I'm just trying to use my laptop on weekends while im doing work to check mail and stuff, and it would be useful. if anyone has any info about this lemme know. I searched all 9 pages of posts for the one, but nothing......

Until you figure it out, you can always set the phone up as a simple wireless modem over the standard phone connection to you existing ISP.

Best you can hope for is 14,400 baud, so everything wil slooooow, but it will work. (I turn off the browsers graphics to speed it up rather dramatically.)

Install the curitel drivers & setup the modem using your DUN using the 'make new connection' wizzard.

use the verizon dialer software

Posted by: VTjay79

so what kind of money do i have to pay for that? i was looking something more along the lines of.......free.......dunno if that is, but i'd rather ask now, then be suprised later lol

Posted by: 3dfever

If I remember correctly, the Curitel way is free.

As Dennis pointed out, set up a DUN account using your wireless cell phone modem and all is fine.

Or if you have an existing DUN account, just click on your cell phone and unclick your regular modem in the dial up properties pages.

thanks guys, so basicall since i have AOL, it will be "free" except that i pay those bloodsuckers too lol. thanks for your help, i'll try it out

Good luck.

It's cool the first time you log on, seeing those numbers being dialed on your cellphone. The excitement wears off after a while but still cool the first few times.

Slow as heck but great for checking emails as your intentions are anyways.

Hope you get it going, good luck.

The method I use is to set up a separate DUN, manually click on this to ebstablish the connection to my DUN and THEN click on Internet Explorer or Outlook (after the connection is established.) That way I do not make any changes to my setup.

But either way will work.

So if i hook up my 8610 to my laptop, and dl software for it, i can connect to my isp, and browse the internet???

Posted by: niteriderxp

Hi,

I want to clariify some things.

You can get internet at 144kbps through verizon using only minutes if you have an america's choice plan.

Connecting
Create a dialup connection with the following settings:

Verizon 3G/1X Data/Express Network
a.. Select the modem. Ideally you want the serial/usb connection to the phone
to operate at 230400 otherwise you will suffer lower throughput
b.. The phone number is #777 (be sure to include the pound sign)
c.. The username is yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com (For example
5551234567@vzw3g.com)
d.. The password is vzw

You also need to put the init string "AT$QCMDR=3" without quotes into the phones modem configuration.

I use Smith Micro's Quicklink mobile myself which does the configuration for me. Got it with a charging cable from www.rpiwireless.com.

Yes. It's slow at 14,400 baud but it will connect to your existing ISP. Good enough for email, but probably should turn off graphics for web browsing. All you need is the Curitel drivers (the driver to turn the phone into a modem is included.) This is the method I have been using for years with my laptop.

Can't say about the high speed method, haven't tried it. Nite Rider's post (above) tells you how to connect at high speed, but I read in another thread where several others tried this and had charges appear on their bill.

Just guessing, but, I would imagine that Verizon will quickly close any gaps in their service to prevent anyone from opening a high speed connection w/o payment.

Anyway, why not try both ways? The slow method will definitely work and costs only minutes (nothing if at night or weekends) and *if* the fast method works (w/o additional charges), that would be the method to stick with.

so nite rider, i called verizon and i'm on the americas choice plan. they told me that for 79.95 a month i can have unlimited broadband connection that doesnt take from minutes night or day, and just works all the time when i need it. I'm not really about to pay this amount at all. But if i do what you have told me to do, will this kick in their system that i've been using this and automaticall bill me for that? A couple posts up it said people have been charged for this.......i wonder what that is, seeing as the verizon guy told me that for the 14.4 it would use my minutes and no other charges monthly would apply. I'm curious to see if this works, yet i'm skeptical at the same time. Obviously it sounds like you have done this since you said "years", but i'm just making sure

i have an 8610 vm phone

so can i use the high speed way???

or will it use up my money

Posted by: VTjay79

ok so i decided to say screw it and go ahead and try it. The only problem is that i have both the futuredial and the curtail drivers, and when i try to run the verizon dialer, it checks com1, gets nothing, then goes directly to com 7, where my USB is plugged in, it waits a little while, then it tells me there is no phone connected to the computer.

I tried installing the phone as a modem manually through the add new modem wizard, but i was quite perplexed. Since i plan on using the EN MOU, i didnt wanna do 14.4., but i didnt know what to do, and when i tried to install it with the "have driver" option, it told me the curtail drivers did nothing.

Also when realizing i had the radio shack cable and everyone had told me to do get the futuredial drivers, i tried to reinstal that, and remembered that there is no option for the CMD 8900 and that i had to choose LG VX6000. Could that have been a reason it is not recognizing it.

I just find it odd that i can use bitpim, brewsky, but it wont recognize it as a modem. Any suggestions? Anyone?

This is how I got my computer to recognize the modem, I followed the exact steps from the link I posted above in this thread. I also have no problems using Bitpim or Brewsky:

Add a modem
Don't detect my modem
On next screen chose manufacturer: Verizon
and choose Verizon Wireless Phone 1XRTT
Reboot
Run the Verizon QuickLink Mobile software

You may also have to change this on the phone itself for it to work. I have to change every time I want to use it as a modem:

##7678 [end]
choose option 2 (data)
choose RS232C

I connect at the high speed and have not been charged for anything except minutes.

Alright, SCORE, it works. Thanks to EVERYONE that offered their advice, it is much appreciated. I had to force CDMA because i'm in my basement and signal keeps bopping in and out, but it did work. I cant wait to get my new sony vaio mini up and running with that stuff, should add for more enjoyable times

You are correct.

And as for the statement someone made about others being charged for NA service - no.

What they're probably thinking of the is infamous 'letter' that some Unlimited NationalAccess/BroadbandAccess VZW subscribers have received after using 'too much' bandwidth. Those can be found in the regular VZW forum.

NA-MOU (or derivations thereof) is found on most America's Choice plans with the 8900, since this phone has a camera...they want to push the availability and use of picture messaging, and NationalAccess is the vehicle for that.

Finally - there is no need to have AOL, Earthlink, etc...with either the slower (14.4k) QNC service or the fast (144k) NationalAccess service. Opening a session with either speed with get you an IP address, and you will automatically hook into VZW's DNS servers. Nothing else to it.

Posted by: SimplePinoi177

so you're saying, mmmark, that if I connect to the internet using my phone as a modem, and after doing all that signing in and username and passwords and everything, that i'll only get charged my minutes? I'd just like to make sure that it'll just count against my minutes and not charge me like a dollar per k/bite downloaded. Also, what is "NA-MOU (or derivations thereof)?" Also, while you're at it, can you explain this:" You also need to put the init string "AT$QCMDR=3" without quotes into the phones modem configuration" i found it down the thread and even though I got my phone to work as a modem already, i'd still like to know why this person said you needed to do this, because I never did this and got it to work.

When I call Verizon and ask them if the 3g connection is free if I have a americas choice plan they say it is not free, and that it is 25 cents a minute.

Can anyone verify the below information?

Okay...i can clarify if doing all of this is free or not...

I called Verizon today (or 611) and went to a tech person to answer some of my questions; one being if I do all of this would it be free or would i have to pay by rate...
answer is that if you have America's Choice (which is what most of us have anyways) that it will only count on your minutes. This is where people get confused thinking that you will get charged because most customer service reps don't make it clear enough. Sometimes they say you pay 25 cents per minute, but that's because that's what you would pay per minute airtime if you were just calling a regular number. So they skip the fact that you probably have a certain number of peak time minutes and just say you pay per minute OUTSIDE of those peak minutes...but if you have say 400 peak minutes or (like i do) UNLIMITED NIGHTS & WEEKENDS, then using your phone would only count against THOSE minutes and if you go over, THEN you would pay 25 cents per (but you would pay this amount even if you weren't using this as a modem and just to call a friend's cellphone). As for some other people saying that getting the "Express Network" for something like $75 a month (but you could supposedly use your phone as a modem anytime without counting against your peak minutes)...this DOESN'T mean that in order to use their service you HAVE to pay $75...this just means that if you had a VerizonWireless compatable phone but didn't use VerizonWireless, you could pay the $75 just to be registered to use their network anytime you would want to. The most important thing is that most of us having this phone USE VerizonWireless, so you're already having an account to use to get unto their network. IF YOU HAVE A VERIZON ACCOUNT, YOU DO NOT NEED TO SIGN UP TO USE THE EXPRESS NETWORK, YOU ALREADY HAVE AN ACCOUNT TO ACCESS IT.
So whether you use the 1XRTT(240.4 kbps) or the Quick Net Connection(QNC or 14.4kbps), as long as you can successfully load up your phone as a modem and have a verizonwireless account, you can choose any of these 2 options.

and on a side note: i was also told that if you did sign up for that $75 express network account while you ALSO have a verizonwireless account, they will just give you a whole other number to use for the extended network account (which i think is kind of stupid because you ALREADY HAVE an account and number to log into that extended network) which is probably what that NAM 2 on the phone is for...

pm me or email me if you have any further questions...

Your above post is not exactly correct from what I was told. And From what I was told, makes more sense.

I was basically told that with the popularity of GIN, Pic Messages, Etc, Etc. & WAP... VZW opens the 3g network. They will not charge you if you use the 3g network via your phone as a modem because they cant tell the difference of using it as a modem or using gin or picture messaging.

I was told by many supervisors that I (anyone) could most likely use the 3g network without being charged... although, there is a chance if someone were to look at your account closely and notice an extreme amount of usage of it that there can be 'delayed' charges for it and/or disabling it, etc.

This answer makes sense. It has also been verified by many technicians and supervisors.

Posted by: SimplePinoi177

well...i've talked to many technicians and supervisors as well and they've all assured me that's it only counts towards your minutes only...so i guess we'll see what happens as i intend to use my phone as modem a lot while on the road or someone else can confirm either of our information...

on a side note, all of the people you talked to might've told you all of that because they don't want it to spread around that they are offering this service, in essence, free...but i'm no expert in any of this so this is just my opinion, nothing more...

Posted by: FocusOnMBM

If it was free, and was meant to be free... It would be documented somewhere. right? It would be in the plan, or something of the such.

If it was free, and not meant to be free... Then, customer service reps wouldn't know about it... And assume it costs money. The technicians will obivoulsy know more, and know why it's free and shouldn't be free.

That's just my opinion as well... And definately post if you ever get charged but it's my assumption the more and more that people use the faster network via a modem, and the longer that people use it... The sooner it will get shut off or the sooner they will find a way to bill us.

That's just my opinion

Posted by: mnMark

I had a long conversation with a WDTS rep back when I opened a 2nd line with my Aircard (I now have the Unlimited NA/BA account).

Since I was getting service, I figured it wouldn't hurt to bring this up, so I specifically told him that I was using it as minutes-of-use before, and if they were planning on either publicizing that or removing that option.

The guy's reply was "oh yea, that...right now I haven't heard anything, but I do know that they watch for abusers..."

I asked a few more questions about it - if people were charged, if access was removed, etc...and all those questions were met with an "I don't know."

I mentioned this in a other thread, but my speculation is that once BroadbandAccess is released, the NationalAccess will replace Quick2Net (it'll be advertised as a MOU service). Quick2Net will likely stick around, but it will be one of those old services they leave on, and newer techs will likely not know much about it...you'd have to get your call escalated to someone who has been around a while to get real support on such an "old service" That's my guess for what's coming.

Anyways, given that a mere fraction of a percent of VZW users are also HoFo users...this "problem" or "sneaky use" is probably a tiny blip on their radar, and the odds of getting a letter or call would be pretty slim.

Posted by: VTjay79

ok so i did this on my PC to test and see if it would work and it did. I just ot my new laptop and am trying to ge everything in order, and it wont work, installed the futuredial driavers no problem.....bitpim and brewsky work, but the verizon dialer wont auto recognize it.......grrrrr any suggestions?

Posted by: tom108

did you try dialing ##76768 then press end. scroll down to data. and change the port to RS232C.

Posted by: VTjay79

tom thanks man, worked like a charm

Posted by: tom108

no prob glad to help!

Posted by: VTjay79

So i've got everything working with my phone as a modem but i still have a question, just for referance i broke down and bought the mobile office kit, because the cable is much better and holds the contact points better, so i'm using the curitel drivers, and even use the verizon dialer.

Anyway, the connection seems to be the same for both the quick 2 connect and the 1Xrtt, when i connect, the connection speed says connected at 230k for both, but when i did a downloading test they both seemed to download at an average 14.4 speed. do you know why this is?

i have the baud rate set at the max, so i'm not too sure what the deal is

I didnt use the initialization string, because i thought the smith micro program does it for me. is there something i'm missing?

Posted by: VTjay79

i stand corrected, quick 2 net is WAYYYY slower

Posted by: mnMark

The 230k speed that pops up down on your taskbar indicates the speed that your computer is communicating with your phone: The PC <-> Cable <-> Phone connection is cabable of communicating up to 230k per second.

As for your tested speed - you should exceed 14.4 when on NationalAccess...You might want to use broadbandreports.com to hit up a few different speed testing servers to see if you are really getting that speed; it sounds a suspiciously low. If it really is the case, I would add the init string back in...

I don't know how/why your phone would connect to Q2N if you are using the NA credentials, but you never know.

Posted by: JDR

14.4K is in the right ballpark for the FREE 1xrtt connection. Mine connects at about 120K - 125K CONNECTION with an average TRANSFER rate of about 15K (according to my last speed test at nyc.speekeasy.net mine was a 123K conection with 15.4K transfer rate).

So I'd say yours is doing fine VTjay56

These are the steps I took.
I bought the cable which registers in XP as curitel modem.
I installed the curitel drivers. When XP asks to search for drivers, take it to the directory where you extracted the drivers. It installs 3 devices I think.

Then you can install a network connection just like you do in XP. right click on my network etc...then it will show the curitel modem for dialing out.
Use the phone number as #777
and username will be
your phone number@vzw3g.com
password is vzw

you do not need to worry about initialization or changing the type of connection etc on the phone from USB to rs232c

It is not required in case of curitel drivers and XP connection. NO need ot download verizon dialer.

My connection seems to be Express Network, since I was getting a bandwidth of 56K down and 42K upload. This is good considering that I am at the bottom of the hill in San Francisco and the number of bars on the phone were 4 and not 5 most of the times.

I will test the bandwitdth and see if I can get higher throughput.

Verizon does give you an IP and DNS so you do not need to even use your ISP.

This is pretty cool just so long as they let us use it.
