SCP 5500 as a modem

Hi,
Anyone have success using this cellphone as a modem? I just downloaded and installed the drivers for the cable from FutureDial and the modem and cable are recognized in hardware manager but can't connect to the internet.

I used Bitpim to communicate with it and all's fine.

What am I doing wrong?

Alright I have found the solution to using any(i think) sanyo phones as a modem.

Buy a data cable from where ever you want. I got mine off ebay then d/l the drivers.

The software you need to connect can be had from Sprints own site for free.

I searched and searched and finally ran across this website. click here

you may be able to go straight here without logging in here

you will select your O.S. after it will bring up a list you want the only that states

(Vision/PCS Wi-Fi) PCS Connection ManagerSM Software for Airprime PC3200/USB Cables

that worked perfectly for me

You don't need that Sprint software. I just bought a cable, (mine's the FutureDial, but it shouldn't matter.) downloaded the drivers, and installed the phone as a modem. Then set up a new internet connection to use the SAnyo 5500 modem and set the number to #777. I've heard that there are no charges if you have unlimited vision usage, but I just started using it so I haven't confirmed that myself.

I'm with Verizon right now, and we basically have the option of taking express network/data from our minute allowance.

My question stems from trying to hook a friend's Sanyo 8100 up in the same way. On Verizon, we set the phone up as a modem and then use the connection settings of:

username: yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com
password: vzw
number: #777
and then some people use certain INIT strings etc, but I've never had to use those.

What would be the equivilent on sprint?

Also, someone mentioned that you get data for free if you have an unlimited "vision" plan, I'm not sure exactly what that is, anyone care to confirm this?

Thanks!

"Vision" or "PCS vision" is Sprint's wireless data service. It seems that the modem set up is the same as Verizon, except I never enter a username or password. LIke I mentioned above, I was told that if you have the unlimited vision plan (i.e. you can transfer an unlimited amount of non-voice data over your phone) you can use the #777 with your phone as a modem without incurring extra charges. After my invoice for this month comes in (the cycle ends October 4), I'll update you all as to whether or not the part about charges is true. I do know that the phone does work as a modem and connects to the internet with no username or password and #777 as the number. I get 115.2kb/s (That's kilobits, not kilobytes).

thanks for the reply, jason, what do you use as a username? I doubt the yournumber@vzw3g.com would work very well on sprint. perhaps it is yournumber@sprint.com?
Thanks!

You don't need a username or password. I haven't used one yet, and I've logged in several times and used the internet.

Thank you Jason for taking the time to reply to this question. I went to bed worrying where my answer to that was hidden and found it first thing this morning. It's kind of hard to get answers to simple questions like this.

Just wanted to say that I got my invoice for September, and the method works if you get PCS Vision in your plan. There are no additional charges.

technically its against TOS to use your phone as a modem with #777, but from what I was told, you can use it sporatically (sp) without a problem

the 5500 works great as a modem and if you use the #777 dial you never get charged even if you leave it connected all day.

HOWEVER--------There are problems with Windows XP SP2

My 5500 used to work fine until I updated with SP2. Now I can get connected but I cannot receive. the status shows only transmitting but not receiving.

Anyone have suggestions? Have you seen this before?

I have SP2 and mine still works fine. Check your firewall settings. SP2 enables the Windows ICF automatically if you don't have your own firewall that it detects. Other than that, I'm not sure what would cause that except mabe an errant setting in your dial-up settings or on your phone, though the latter seems unlikely unless you've been messing with it.
